We spent 48 hours on a mini holiday in the North of Spain, an area known as Asturias, and staying in the city centre of Oviedo. The next few travel vlog will show exactly why we think you should take your next holiday or weekend to Northern Spain!
Principado de Asturias as it's known to the locals is still so strictly Spanish, full of tradition, culture and an incredible lifestyle... there's also an insane amount of things to do, beaches, coast, nature and more.
This was our first time seeing the North coast of Spain and we loved it - it feels untapped, there's less people, less tourism and so much more to appreciate without the hustle. For a full read on what to do with 48 hours in Asturias check out our blog post: danegerandstacey.com/48-hours...
Northern Spain Tours should be the next thing you Google, find a way to get here soon!
Thanks to Spain Tourism and Turismo Asturias for inviting us to explore the North of Spain and share how amazing it is!

Not trying to be snobbish but also the average tourist visiting the North is very different from the typical tourist who comes to Spain looking for sun and party. We usually are very proud of our tourists up here. They are looking for other things for their vacation and they often behave in consequence.

Most tourists visit the south for the Sun, Mediterranean sea, resorts and cheap package holidays. The north is Spain's hidden secret. Beautiful green scenery, paradise like beaches, sophisticated small cities full of great architectures and a very chill out and civilized place, not over run by tourists and not so over populated. Along with museums and even contemporary artist of today that are in the top of their fields (some of which sadly had to leave, Spain is sadly not filling the needs of scientists, artists and other intellectuals at this moment in time).

very well put together video, guys. Asturias is, in my opinion, the most beautiful region in spain.
It is also one of the most importatn history wise since the begining of what you could call the "spain's legend" starts here. there's a shrine, hiden in the moutains, called covadonga in honor of the first "hero" of spain. In the year 711 the moors had conquered almost all the iberian peninsula but the northern regions, protected by the mountains. Don Pelayo, defeated the morish troops, begining a 700 year period of wars called the reconquista. at the end of which in 1492 the country of spain was born under the spanish monarchy of the Catholic kings Isabella and Ferdinand and america was found by Cristopher Columbus.
The principality of Asturias is full of history and beautiful places

We are both from Puerto Rico although born in the US (NYC and Chicago) and of course from spaniard descendants... Anyways, back to Iberia. The food, the people, the history, the sites, second to none. We have been to 6 countries in Europe, but Espana, la mejor! Austria, Czech Republic, close seconds, France is close, but Paris really sucked... Now, is funny to me how our food, culture and words are attached to old Spain without our unconsious knowledge. Although Basque country was my least favorite. La rosia, cantinbria, Asturias, and galacia were very cool culturally to. The National Park of europia is awesome. One of the few places in europe that its easy to see wild big game..

In Asturias there's a unique architecture called Asturian Pre-Romanesque . Most of the buildings are in Oviedo, you Saw one in this video... They belong to a period in which the only Christian kingdom in Spain was Asturias, the rest of the country was Muslim. It was a long time ago, in the VlII and IX centuries, during Charlemagne Empire. It was the first kingdom which defeated the Muslims in the Middle Ages. Dont forget the crosses in the cathedral, they are amazing and similar to Carolingian gold objects. You'll be welcomed... Try the "fabada" and the cider, the way its poured is very original....

Everytime that I read/hear a foreigner talking about the North of Spain and how underrated is I am glad and angry at the same time.
The North of Spain has been there always. Its food. Its culture and folklore. Its mountains and beaches. Its proper snow season and all...
Perhaps the North remains undiscovered because that's what the average tourist wants. Cheap beer. Cheap food. Sun sun sun and be surrounded by fellow english speakers and is too lazy to go on its own?
Glad You enjoyed your visit and thanks for sharing your experience.
You still need to go to Galicia and specialy the Basque Country.
    :)

    • @DanegerAndStacey
      @DanegerAndStacey  Před 5 lety

Can pretty much agree with what you've said. The reality is, even the Spanish tourism board understands that the North is less visited, or considered, for tourists so want people to be more aware of the options Spain has to offer. There's got to be a tonne of people visiting the same spots that arent just after cheap beer, cheap food and sun and would be stoked to know there are amazing options up North.

The Asturian Pre-Romanesque architecture is unique in Europe, one of the oldest after the Roman Period, previous to the Romanesque style (as its name suggests), buildings of 1200 years of age. The Museum of Art is also an amazing Museum and the Archaelogical Museum as well. Besides the landscapes and food you have to visit the caves with extraordinary Stone Age paintings, not very known even in Spain. There are many treasures to see in Asturias. It's worth visiting and eating fish or meat, and the Cabrales cheese...

He thanked the town by filming parts of Asturias in this movie. He added several parts of Avilés as well (he loves lighthouses, dont know why). It was a way of thanking the warm welcome he received there, people in Spain like his movies more than in the USA and the reason you can find his portrait in Oviedo, if anyone wonders why, and its shown in one of these videos...

There's even a town made of only stone which is next to a artificial lake made where there used to be a village, and you can see the tip of the church tower peaking of the lake (This place called "Tavertet").
