How Many Ways Do You Need To Smell "Good"?

  • I know that toes will be stepped on in this video. But please know that I am stepping on them out of care and experience.
At one point in time, I had amassed about 100 bottles, at least 80% of which were designer blind buys based on CZcams recommendations, and I acquired them for one conspicuous purpose: to smell "good" to others, and ultimately get compliments.
While I did get some of the compliments I was looking for, I later realized that many of these fragrances smelled similar to each other and served the same purpose. Worse, they didn't even smell great to me...just, "good". They bored me.
It goes without saying that I was drowning in redundancy. And so I sold ALL of those fragrances, save for a few decent ones, and started my collection from scratch. I'm glad I did.
This video is not meant to communicate that it is bad or wrong to want to smell "good"...instead, I'd like to encourage you to ask the question: how many fragrances like this do you need? It is a bit rhetorical, but I believe that you can answer it for yourself. You don't have to answer to me.

I smell my arm and am glad I’m wearing this particular fragrance. I’ve gotten goose bumps they smell so good. ITS A MUST HAVE FRAGRANCE -if I don’t feel like that, I’m not getting a full size (that’s going to last me 3 or 4 years).
I got 12 starting spots on the team and they all need to be first round draft picks. I feel like I’m building an ALL STAR🤩 team of fragrances and every body is a LeBron Kobe Shaq Jordan hybrid.

It’s like an addiction sometimes and it can be crippling in ways. Always trying to find “the one” to capture a feeling I once had 10 years ago. You don’t need 20 frags…..10 at the most.
For anyone reading this, buy decants and try them out. Give it a full wear and don’t buy a bottle unless you’re gobsmacked with how you feel and can’t do without it. If you start buying bottles and fall into debit and regret, you won’t get a shred of satisfaction.

Have fell down the rabbit hole of the fragrance addiction. Started wanting to smell great and was able to succeed in that. However, you always want to find something better and continues the purchasing. After about $3k deep into these fragrances and several disappointing blind buys, I'm now getting into decants over buying full bottles.

As I said in DM, I think a fragrance collection should be built around fragrances genre, and not collecting all hyped scents. Doing that leads to collect fragrances having the same purpose. My husband and I did that mistake in the very beginning. Now, we curated scents we want to add in the collection. If we found a better flanker, we'll replace it when the original is finished. It's sure it's fun having a large collection, showing them, but in my point of view, I have nobody to impress with our collection. I curate fragrances I love and enjoy wearing.

I see things very much the same way. I also love how Justin focuses on avoiding redundancy-- I think that's what you and I can also both connect on. We curate our olfactory wardrobes by finding the 'best in show' for each category or fragrance profile. For example; I just bought a bottle of Hermes's discontinued 'Caleche' and it does the 'mature powdery aldehydic floral chypre chic' vibe so well that it's cancelled out my TRULY needing a bottle of Grossmith's Shem El Nessim or Phul Nana. The one fragrance type which I cannot nail at the moment is the velvety dark rose-oud-leathers. There are so many out there that I love the smell of that it's come down to the utilitarian needs of sillage and wonderfully lively and compelling longevity; which one will perform better on my skin and thus justify being singled out as 'best in show' and take that reserved place in my shopping cart. 🏆🛒🤩

I’ve been in this boat, had fragrances that have smelt great but for whatever reason I never reached for them. They were collecting dust and to me it was just money sitting on those shelves…luckily I was able to sell them all. Now I have about 4-5 actual bottles and tons of decants…but I don’t feel bad about having decants. I don’t blind buy bottles anymore, decants have saved my wallet lol
Sometimes you appreciate a fragrance for the art that it is…but that doesn’t mean you yourself are going to reach for it. Throughout this journey I’m now more focused on what do I want to wear? And enjoying wearing.
Thanks for letting me ramble on lol and great video.

Out of the 99% only 1% wear expensive niche fragrances and out of the 1% here in America, only 1% of them are brave enough to venture into middle eastern fragrances. I like to be different for me and for others to experience the beautiful art of perfumery.

There’s probably a few more bottles I can part ways with, but I’m more so going for quality over quantity. Thank you for always going against the grain and getting people to think for themselves. Everyone’s collection should reflect the person themselves, not the entire community. 🙏🏻

    @mrrob4590 Před 2 lety +10

One problem with a large collection I’ve noticed is categorizing frags for specific weather and or events instead of just wearing because I love it. For example I’m at the point now that I only wear Chanel sycamore in the fall for special events and perhaps if I know I’ll be outdoors when the leaves are changing I only reach for Bergamot 22 when temps reach the 90’s. I only reach for Carslile when it’s snowing. It becomes silently maddening. Maybe I should sell them all and just get bleu de Chanel because it actually works for almost everything.

I would like to say, that I really appreciate your honesty and sincerity, when you made the first video about mindless hoarding and obsessing over fragrances, it really made me rethink and revamp my interest in fragrances, I was on Instagram always posting new fragrances trying to keep up with the Joneses and really lost what I really love about fragrance is actually the smell, I got caught up in trying to show off for a bunch of people I will probably never meet in my life. Your video made me really step back and take a big look at myself and say what are you really doing here, are you in it for the love of the fragrances or are you just showing off, so I shut down my Instagram sold a lot of fragrances that I did not really even care for and kept the ones that really tugged at my heart strings, Now I am back to where I started, actually loving the fragrances for the smell of them. And again you made most of us hopefully think about what is right and less right about fragrances and our collections Justin.
Smelling good, or "what scent makes me feel good", is subjective. Talking in general you are spot on with your choises made in this video. But what one person sees as a "smelling good scent" by asking this question, might not even be a general scent, but a specific scentprofile someone has, or has in mind. I like to smell good by wearing classic scents, but younger people watching your channel don't gravitate for those, but more for the modern way to smell good. A classic scent can smell good and have a mass appeal, so does a modern scent. Someone could also want to smell good while wearing challeging scents, or notes within a scent like oud.
So in general the way you answered this question, I take my hat off. But without knowing what the pesonal preference is of these persons, you still won't satisfy these people who were asking you this question. So you are not to blame on that one. People who are asking you an open and subjective question without further background intel on what they are looking for, is nearly impossible to answer.
It's like going to a cardealer and asking; "I want a car that looks good". Does the person has a musle car in mind that looks good, or a family car in mind that looks good, a truck in mind that looks good... without knowing you would always reccomand the wrong car.

For me fragrances/perfumes bring back memories, bring me into a mood, make me feel a certain way so I have a big collection. Some I have to remember at time in my life (good memories) and so even if I don’t use them often I love having them around. Perfumes are magic to me and so I also share them with my two teenage daughters which brings me joy as well since I get to tell them the story behind the fragrance they are getting. I never thought I would have as large collection as I have but then again I prioritize and chose in my life. At this moment scents and memories are important and so I prioritize that. But I never go over the budget I have every month for that splurge. It is a luxury and I am have worked hard to be able to be able to do that.

From CZcamsr's perspective it's a conflict, because you will always have viewers than just wants to smell good and don't care about different facets - this is where many of us started. Hi Justin. 100% true. I try to avoid redundancy, in fact I mentally label many mass appealing as characterless, I always try to select fragrances that are different. Most of my collection is anything but mass appealing. I do keep in mind the wearing occasion and have a sort of a classification matrix for that (office, romantic, friends : summer, winter:: day night) but it is not very strict. The "office" category do sometimes fall under the fresh shower gel mass appealing type, but not always. I do sometimes wear things like JV Vintage, SUNG and Euphoria Liquid Gold even to office. I have even wore things like Beau de Jour and Terre D'Hermes to business dinners.

The interesting part is that I view fragrances differently now. I once applied a fragrance before going to sleep and really loved it so I tried it when my girlfriend was at my place. She was like.. Why are you wearing a fragrance when going to bed? My answer was: Because it calms me down. It was something I did for myself.. Not for anyone else.. Not even my girlfriend.

Oh I love this comment: you instantly reminded me of eavesdropping on grandmother and grandson waiting alongside me at a bus stop discussing the afternoon movie they'd just been to see together. She questioned the 10 year old with, 'Did you enjoy it?' He chirped back whilst dragging a small dried twig back and forth on the ground, 'Yeah, it was really funny'. Her brows furrowed and she said, 'Well if you thought it was funny, how come I didn't hear you ever laugh?' I've never forgotten his unexpectedly self-aware and undeniably witty explanation of his own juvenile inner workings (which turned out to be surprisingly sophisticated):
"Well, because I found it too interesting to laugh."
What a smart, analytical, deep little kid, I thought. Plus he shut his grandma up and stopped her hassling him with her comparatively dumb interrogations. So I thought I'd let you know WHY a total stranger has connected with YOUR comment: "some [fragrances] smell interesting to me rather than pleasing." I actually know precisely what you mean. I have a few fragrances that fall in that category perfectly. Your comment deserves an entire video on discussing this phenomenon in which the content creator shares reviews of fragrances which are perfect examples of this. Imagine the comment section! I'd be wildly compelling.👃🧠😍

Building a collection myself. I do not think they are redundant at all even though they might be similar. Quite honestly think it is part of the journey. I for one only ever went for freshies. Chrome EDT being my poison of choice but realized this after owning many of the flankers and using all up to realize they were not that special as the original. I have now graduated to darker fragrances as well. I do get decants as well but have had quite awful experiences buying them. About 50% have been watered down or gone bad. I am enjoying the different view points.

To smell good and have a basic variety I would say you should have 8 fragrances: a day and night fragrance for each season and then probably a 9th for formal occassions date, wedding, formal dinner etc.
They also do not need to be expensive designer or niche they can be clones or rack store cheapies (plenty of youtube videos for those too).
Now that said there are PLENTY of people who do not regularly wear fragrances and 1-3 work perfectly well for them. In fact for most of my life I never had more than four fragrances (now I've got 30-40).

This is hard but i do get what you mean, JC. Blue frags are the easiest to cut as they offer little uniqueness between them. Then perhaps cut it down some more with the typical function categories like clubbing, date, blacktie as well as seasonal scents for both morning and night. That should create a distinction from everyday and event specific frags which cuts down on your collection :)

Not necessarily having or buying every fragrance I like in one shot.
My goal is 24 Fragrances. These fragrances will belong to my collection named "THIS IS I "
6 fragrances for each season that represent me and my tastes.
Quality over quantity take advantage of samples and decants before committing to a full bottle.
If you really love a fragrance although it has the same DNA of others in your collection it's not redundant.
Rule of thumb if it is collecting dust gift it to someone you know may enjoy fragrances. Start the Fire.

You bring up an interesting philosophical difference for the reason for wearing fragrances. The average person wears a fragrance to smell “good”, whether to project an image, feel confident, or to impress others. Designer brands, or “corporate” perfumery, markets to this specific market segment, because it is the largest and most profitable. They utilize marketing teams to ascertain what will smell “good” and “appealing” then design a perfume around that. Conversely, a different approach is to wear perfume because they can be objective works of art and “beautiful”. Master perfumers are literally artists; they use a combination of advanced chemistry, skill, and creativity to create something that we can appreciate for its beauty. These tend to be niche/indie brands because they are less constrained by budget and business objectives to create what they view as art. Then people wear the fragrance because they appreciate that beauty and want to wear art. Maison Francis Kurdijan said something like “I create my fragrances to smell beautiful, not to smell good”. There isn’t anything wrong with either approach, just depends on your personal preference, appreciation for art, and what image you would like to convey.

I’ve tried a few niche houses and really like them, so in the future I’d like to expand my nose and appreciate the art more! I look forward to watching your videos to get some recommendations on these types of fragrances haha

Decants/samples. That is it!! For the most part. I can drop them in a box in a corner and not take up space. IF I see any that I like and see myself wearing often, then I'll budget towards a bottle. If its expensive af, then a bigger sample/refills.
Brass & Soul and Business Over Pleasure are so artistic and pleasing, that I wish I could do more than sampling, as they could go for dumb reach. But that's my only option. Gonna try the Zaharoff samples one day, esp Rose and Citrine. Other samples/decants in the making. But I don't foresee buying more than 10 actual full presentations this year; 5 max.

Thank you for the video. I ve been watching ur videos now for a while. Just wanted to share some thoughts but please see it as constructive as I come to you with good intentions.
I think u have all the ingredients to have a bigger channel than u currently have. Great looks, very charismatic voice and u come across to me as a superpleasant person. On top of that u show great discipline in ur postings so u have good work ethic. So that is already a very solid foundation to do well if u have great content.
I think in fragrance content there are two basic types (generally speaking) that tend to create the most views. A. Content for freaks/lovers/aficionados. And B. Content for the bros, how to get more women. U do neither focused which is a choice of course.
U already said in a couple videos that ur are looking for alternative content but I m afraid these “morality” type videos are not ur golden ticket.
Assuming u want to do ur own and unique I suggest u either find a totally different angle that touches on these two main viewgenerators or u do something completely different. For example u have credits in jazz music, why not find a connection contentwise there. I fear otherwise u ll remain in this 50-80k subscriber space.

That will be my first PDM full bottle purchase. How do I also know I'm over the moon about the scent? I have two clones of it in Detour Noir and Lalique White in Black. And honestly, some frags I wear at home because I just enjoy them. But I hear on you on overlap. Also took your advice on the 50ML bottles. For some people, it's gonna be just a few, maybe even just one. You just have to think about who you are as a person, what are your values. That seems a little bit deep, but maybe one of your biggest values is practicality and that means maybe you only have one fragrance. Maybe you're someone who really likes to dive deep and you really take hobbies seriously and for someone like that you might have dozens or even hundreds. If you do that, though, I highly recommend taking it slow, stopping often to appreciate what you have and considering whether or not you actually need more, or if you're buying just to scratch the itch.
Try to always be getting something that's different from what you already have, and step outside your comfort zone. That's what my main focus has been. Maybe you can get a few fragrances that are in a similar style, but don't just get 20 blue fragrances unless you genuinely just want to collect all of them.

I'd love to know how this juxtaposition would affect your state of mind and if it would alter your behaviour or perception at all. Fragrance really does have such power, doesn't it? There are certain fragrances I would NEVER wear when wearing shorts and t-shirt and running into the supermarket for Gochujang, y'know? And likewise, the 'oddballs' wouldn't be worn to wakes, interviews and business meetings. Isn't it strange? I always suggest a "likeable" designer scent to get them started then to branch out into more challenging notes such as leathers, tobaccos, iris ect... the balance is recommending designers that don't hold a high price tag whilst still smelling of quality... if it snowballs from there then you have a better idea of what genres you desire within the world of luxury nichè

I like to think this topic is N/A to me - I mostly look for stuff that smells different, i.e. standout-ish. I don't have much success with that for the summer months, but for spring/fall/winter I got a huge basket of unique profiles. For example, this spring rotation was dominated by Enclave and Gris Charnel Extrait with some wear to Ouverture. None of these smell typical.
Will note that my most often worn scents so far in 2022 are misleading in that they are dominated by scents that are at least in some way gym-safe, so PDM takes the cake here (30+ wears across Sedley, Percival, Layton). These would be the "smell good" scents. As for how many of them I need, well - I got a trash batch of Aventus that I don't wear, I got those 3 PDMs, got Apple Brandy on the Rocks, Cedrat Boise, Royal Oud, and a couple from Goldfield&Banks (Pacific Rock Moss, Bohemian Lime) - that's basically it for safe-wear smell-good scents.

I guess I have a lot that land in the "generic mass appealing" category and I have some that end up in those "unique scent" videos, but why would I stress on what category my fragrance falls into. Do I like it? If yes, I wear it. If no, I don't buy it.

@@SirSillageSniffington thank you it’s harder to find now a days and the asking price is getting insane. I was able to get 4 bottles a few years back. Love that coffee note

Well I know one thing I Don't need is another Invictus smelling fragrance.
But I can say there's some fragrances I have in my collection not because I want to wear them but because I wanted to have the whole line . Kind of by collecting comic books

Justin is to us what Morpheus is to Neo but instead of the matrix it's fragrances.

I've had as many as 70 odd in my collection and am in the process of working it down to around 10 - 12 favorites. I have one criterion really - does it smell good to me regardless of price. A couple I reach for a lot are Terre d'Hermes, Narciso Rodriguez For Him and Bleu Noir, Prada Carbon and Cartier Declaration d'Un Soir. One of the most inexpensive that I have - Tag Him - has literally gotten me compliments every time I've worn it. So, go figure.

Hey Justin, i was wondering if you've ever tried Musc Ravageur by Frederic Malle and what do you think about it. Any opinions? Would love to know your opinion!

Another consideration…..my guess is very few of your subscribers are building an extensive collection simply to “have”. Choosing fragrances with selected notes one really loves choosing for purpose, environment, season and climate makes perfect sense to me, and offers opportunities for a truly useful collection. That’s what I m striving to achieve. When I purchase a “miss”, I just return it. Easy.
