    Keto Diet vs. Paleo Diet: Which Diet is Healthiest for You- Thomas DeLauer… The idea behind the Paleolithic diet is to replicate the ways that our ancestors ate; ancestors could only hunt and gather - had little access to grains and no access to processed foods. The ketogenic diet is designed to completely alter your internal state, a state in which your body burns fat. The Keto diet was originally developed for disease management and to this day is being used for conditions such as epilepsy.
    So, a paleo diet, just like a keto diet, focuses on getting fat and protein as a primary source of energy. However, the big difference is paleo doesn’t avoid carbs. While both diets came about for different reasons, they are both used (mainstream-ly) as effective tools for weight loss.
    Similarities - Health Benefits
    In addition to noticeable weight loss effects, collective studies from the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Journal of Internal Medicine, The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, and the New England Journal of Medicine have found that both Paleo and Keto diets are effective at reducing triglycerides, blood pressure, blood sugar and insulin levels (1,2,3,4)
    Despite providing similar health benefits, they do have some key differences.
    Key Differences:
    Carbs, Fats and Glucose- The main difference is that a Keto diet is truly low carb, whereas a Paleo diet is not necessarily low carb - paleo relies on glucose and keto relies on ketones
    A keto diet requires you to adhere to a strict macronutrient ratio (75% fat, 20% protein, 5% carb) The paleo diet still utilizes glucose for much of its energy so carbs are still a big part of the diet. In order to be in ketosis and utilize ketones, your body needs to be starved of glucose, which results in the body burning fatty acids that produce ketones; an alternative source of energy to glucose. Ketosis is a state that you have to achieve, paleo is about avoiding certain food groups. So a paleo diet is a little more forgiving as having too much of one macro or another won’t kick you out of a metabolic state, unlike keto.
    Dairy:
    The Paleo diet removes foods that are hard for the body to break down and can wreak havoc on gut health - dairy products are one of them. Keto dieters often eat dairy products because they’re high in fats while also being low in carbohydrates.
    Artificial Sweeteners/Food Quality:
    The Paleo diet cuts out most processed food, especially ones with artificial sweeteners and additives - focuses strongly on choosing whole foods that are nutrient-dense, high-quality, and free from toxins. However, on the Keto diet the only requirements are that your food is low-carb/high fat. This means diet soda is technically Keto approved and so are other artificially sweetened low-carb junk foods - Although a healthy Keto diet should also include high quality food, it isn’t the emphasis. Summed as short as possible - No processed foods vs no carbs (5)
    Paleo and CrossFit:
    Carbs are staples for CrossFit and athletes, but they are somewhat restricted in the Paleo diet. The Paleo diet also eliminates grains and legumes (both key carb sources for athletes), as well as dairy, salt, and vegetable oils. Carbs that are allowed on the paleo diet (no grains, for example) are too low on the glycemic index to replace glycogen mid- and post-run as quickly as endurance athletes typically need. You’re not low enough on carbs to be producing ketones so you’re not using fat as a main source of energy, and not high enough on carbs to be receiving enough energy from them (6)

    I did Keto for a few months but wound up with too many cravings. 20 grams of carbs a day maximum was a dealbreaker. So I started doing modified Keto instead, limiting sugar, eating healthy fats, protein, and vegetables like kale, spinach, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and esparragos, and drinking plenty of water and seltzer, but allowing myself to have between 50-60 grams of carbs a day, which still isn't a whole lot. This combined with exercise 3 to 4 days a week with weights. It worked for a few of my friends as they lost fat, weight, and gained muscle. I also do a whole lot of walking.

    I think a huge problem surrounding both of these diets is the issue of classification. Both diets have so much to offer… Cherry pick the strong points from each and figure out a protocol. Personally, I like how paleo tends to focus mainly on clean ingredients and a cleaner lifestyle. When this perspective is taken into a ketogenic diet, the combination is powerful. I think adhering to a definition is a pretty stupid way to live life. Just take the philosophies, do the best you can, and don't stress it too much.

After watching your videos along with those by Dr. Jason Fung, I started intermittent fasting (from dinner to dinner - no breakfast or lunch) for either 4 or 5 days a week. I "cheat" on the weekends and eat 2 or 3 meals per day. I have also timed my workouts in the afternoon at the end of my fast according to your advice. I've been doing this for a month and have seen a huge improvement in lost fat around my midsection. I have also felt so much better and not had any of the headaches or weakness that I worried about before starting fasting. When I do eat meals I find my portions are much smaller and I'm not craving junk like I did before.

    I’ve been doing paleo for 73 days. I keep a food diary that I summarize my eating habits for that day it, and in this time I’ve lost 23 pounds. I feel good and I like the way I look. I am also an athlete. I run track and weight lift. So I don’t necessarily agree with the not really losing weight comment. However, I can see if someone goes from eating junk/unhealthy foods and they cut it out, they could lose weight regardless. Before this I was gaining weight at a steady pace and I was not eating healthy. I love paleo, but I’ve been looking at keto just to get educated. I don’t quite understand it tho.

    I've binged watched so many videos. I've been inundated with information. I've experimented a little bit with all the "right ways" to do keto and lots are pretty contradictory. What I've realized is listen to your body. It knows. I've thought back to childhood, back to when I was my healthiest. Back to before all my inflammatory diseases began. And how I ate, what I craved. Think about how my life and health went totally down hill after months of paying a personal trainer and following his nutrition plan. Every body and every body is different. Take all the info as guidelines and figure out what works for you. Keto has ended my chronic pain and I feel better than I have in 20yrs. I'm losing weight. My energy and my mental focus is great. But when I start closely following macros I don't feel as good as when I just listen to my body. I eat a little less fat than recommend I eat more protein when recommend. Sometimes I fast more than recommend. Those are the times I feel the best. My body doesn't do well on coconut oil so I avoid it.
    Looking back I realize I was a keto child naturally. So much so that I was tested for celiac and diabetes as a child because I had such adverse affects to carbs and sugars and never wanted to eat them. I often didn't want to eat a meal just once a day. I never craved sugar or carbs I craved a blue rare steak.
    Being told this was unhealthy and I needed to eat 6 times a day lots of fruits and whole grains. I gained a lot of weight. Body became riddled with inflammatory diseases.
    If I only listened to my body instead of all the experts I wouldn't have spent the past 20yrs in debilitating pain. I also wonder if I would've developed crohns disease at all. They're some science showing a link between gluten and crohns and inflammatory arthritis and eczema. *Raises hand for all 3*
    Doctors, nutritionists, experts took an active healthy happy child/teen and created a very sick person. Just because I didn't want crabs and sugars and I didn't want to eat 3 meals a day. Screw macros, screw rules, listen to your body and what makes you feel the best. Take the tonnes of info as a guideline and find what works for you. What gets you results you can live with while feeling great. Everybody and Every BODY is different.

      Weight loss is only about caloric restriction, you don't need to do any magical macro diets for it. You can loose weight by eating anything, as long as you eat less than what you consume.
      These type of extreme diets are just bad tools for weight loss, as you don't form a healthy balanced diet. And when you stop the diet, you are back eating too much.

    • @peterfaber9316
      @peterfaber9316 Před 6 lety +8

      jannu jokunen Metabolic rate is always ignored by people like you. When you create a calory deficit, your body tries to compensate by burning less calories. Only when you force yourself to exercize you can force your body to keep burning enough calories. The keto diet, which is not extreme at all, switches off this compensation of burning less calories because the body has access to either dietary fat or body fat. In ketosis your body keeps burning calories and doesn't try to reduce the metabolic rate. Even without exercizing you lose weight.
      So you are right about needing a caloric deficit. Just don't ignore variations in metabolic rate.

    • @jannujokunen2701
      @jannujokunen2701 Před 6 lety +4

      "The keto diet, which is not extreme at all, switches off this compensation of burning less calories because the body has access to either dietary fat or body fat."
      There is no metabolic advantage in keto. And keto is extreme, its as extreme as it gets. And for no purpose. Its one of the rare diets that has killed people.

    • @peterfaber9316
      @peterfaber9316 Před 6 lety +5

      jannu jokunen Calorie restriction, when on a high carb diet, causes metabolism to slow down. You think you're eating less than you're burning, but you aren't.
      When you're young and don't have insulin resistance yet, you can get away with eating less and exercizing more. But when you're older, this becomes increasingly more difficult, especially when you have been eating many times a day.
      In the 70s the food advice was changed to more carbs and less fat, and since then obesity has been getting worse. It's just the way it is. Before the 60's it was comon knowledge that in order to lose weight, you had to eat less carbs. Then from the 70s on, that was changed into eating less calories. And people have been getting heavier and heavier ever since.

      I think it is possible, but it works great by fasting not by ingesting huge quantities of fats, for me. I don't like fatty foods. Not diary for sure. Endurance sport in fasted state is great but I don't like to be out of carbs for heavy resistance training. What I do is eating many carbs only in days of heavy lifting and many less in days of endurance such as bike or running. I had some problem when doing a plant based diet, difficult to reduce carbs (but fasting can help there too), hope with some (organic etc.) animal food it be easier. If you do long endurance you go in ketosis even with some carbs eaten. No reason to calculate stuff, that's for sedentary people, just run/bike in fasted state etc and eat less carbs that day, flexibility will improve

      Dane, have you monitored your potassium intake while on keto? Low carb diets "flush out" sodium and potassium from your body. Water binds to sodium, that is the reason why you lose water. One of the functions potassium plays in our body is regulate heart rate and proper function. You should be consuming around 4500 to 5000mg of potassium daily, and about 1000mg more than your recommended sodium intake. I normally get my potassium using LoSalt or any salt substitute that replaces the sodium for potassium. Then you can add pink Himalayan salt for your sodium goals.

Make sure you eat lots of green veggies and hit your electrolytes daily goals and you will be fine.

Life is for living aswell and never regularly having carbs again is a bit like torturing yourself. Plus all that fat consuming on a pure keto diet will eventually cause high cholesterol and heart problems.
      I would say the most balanced and sustainable approach would be to Keto 2/7 days of the week, paleo the other 5/7 days of the week and do 16/8 intermittent fasting 16hour fast/8hour eating window (lean gains diet) every single day. And absolute minimal or no alcohol intake. Now that is a recipe for long term success!

    I prefer paleo with a few keto tweaks to it. And practicing fasting will force your body to burn fat for fuel also and yea ... it's not like paleo eats tons of carbs... misleading showing a whole bakery like that's what paleo is all about 🤣

    I can not believe that you can not eat rice in any of those diets when Asians eat tons of rice daily and are so thin and healthy!

      And they are not healthy. They get surgery and go on massive restrictive diet. They have to be skinny and tall in order to find a job (women). They may be eating rice but drink a lot of tea with laxative in it and they make sure that they don’t eat to many calories . There are a lot of documentaries about how women in China get surgeries to be taller and thinner. Also, in Japan, for instance, they may be eating rice but the rest of the food is pretty much healthy (natural fat, protein and vegetable) not so may junk food. The population walks a lot too. My friend lived in Japan for 3 years and when he moved back to Quebec (canada) is was soooooo much skinnier and even if he tried to stay healthy, he gained back some of his weight because the food in Canada is not as fresh and healthy as in Japan. If you think about it, rice is only 250 per cup. So if you eat 500 cal of rice per day you still have 1300 calories left (for women ) . When you eat healthy and you have a balance lifestyle, you will see that it is hard to reach 1800 calories a day cause it is too filling. If you work out a lot then it will be easier to consummate calories. Get rid of junk food and empty calories, 1800 for a women is lots of calories. (Sorry for my syntax, English is my second language)
