“The Green Mountaineer” - Vermont Republic Song

- The Vermont republic or Green mountain republic was a nation which declared independence from the United Kingdom and the USA during the revolutionary war. The green mountain boys army fought together with American natives and won decisive victories against the British Empire. Though they did not want to become part of the USA initially due to border disputes, they eventually decided to join. They are historically remarkable for their ban of slavery and good treatment of Natives.
I do not promote or necessarily agree with the ideologies of whatever country or people the song is sourced from.

“We owe no allegiance, we bow to no throne, our ruler is Law, and the Law is our own; our leaders themselves are our own fellow men, who can handle the sword, and the scythe and the pen...” Put actual tears in my eyes. God Bless the courage and wisdom of the Vermont Republic, and may it’s memory be eternal.
Fight For Freedom. *What a Brotherhoods. :-')
The Vermont Republic very much did want to join the USA. It made that intention clear from its initial breakaway from New York or New Hampshire, who were the primary antagonists in their story. The only reason they didn't join immediately was that their were outstanding border and property disputes between them, and NY wouldn't let them join until they were settled.
Its even in this song:
Come York or come Hampshire, come traitors or knaves,
If ye rule o'er our land ye shall rule o'er our graves;
oh, that’s a misconception then, i’ll change it later.
ffs I just realized the little IOS menu icons appear in the first few seconds of the song, I’m never gonna unsee it now.
As a vermont native this gets me heart pumping
As a Texian it gets my heart going, too
damn good song
I'm scottish but this makes me want to fight the american union state for new england
@landon8214 native as in from Vermont not native American didn't think about that when I wrote it that way though I had a great great great grandmother that was abenaki so I am technically like 1.75% native American
not even from vermont, but man does this make me feel patriotic for the state, Hoorah from up north!
I reenact the Vermont republic army, along with many other things, as someone who reenacts the Green mountaineers I have to say everyone who makes a GMB video I see as a tribute for all the brave men who fought in died under the flag of vermont
That’s really interesting! Thank you.
Grew up in North Carolina till I was 10, then moved to upstate NY till I was 19, now I live in VT and it's felt more like home than any other state I've lived in. Long live VT!!!
I'm from NC too, we were an independent republic at the same time. What part are you from?
Thank you for posting this! My ancestor helped found the republic, and was a general during the Revolution. God bless!
Interesting! Thanks.
which general?
@@Koldatt General Jacob Bayley - pretty sure you can find him on Wikipedia
@@callmeowenoh I’ve actually heard of him! That’s really cool.
@@mushroomy9899 Oh wow! That's cool - I never have known anyone who knows of him
A good song and a thread in the fabric of American heritage. The Red Coats British Regulars linking up with the Hessians refers to the 1777 British plan to have converging columns from New York City, Boston, and Montreal and Quebec march out and link up in Albany NY to split New England from New York and the rest of the Colonies in a divide and conquer maneuver. The NYC contingent under General Clinton set out late, his superior General Howe having had other plans to capture Philadelphia, the Canadian expeditionary force turned back, and famously at the Battle of Saratoga General Burgoyne surrendered forces under his command just short of reaching the objective.
Yes, just yes
this song just goes unbelievably hard. “Here’s two-legged game for your powder and ball.” “The tribute we pay shall be prisons and graves” the Green Mountain Boys were cooking with this one.
Wow this is actually pretty good
Thanks!
As someone from New Hampshire, this song gives me an overwhelming urge to march on Montpelier.

Try it and you’ll break your leg in a pothole
As Vermonter this makes me feel ready for a fight
View from Europe, Vermont is the ideal US state thru all it's history.
