HIKMICRO B20 Infrared Camera Review from a Home Inspector

  • The folks at HIKMICRO recently reached out to me about testing one of their infrared cameras, and they sent me a B20 camera to try out. The specs look pretty comparable to the FLIR E6-XT, but this camera retails for $549 on Amazon, which is about a quarter of the cost of the FLIR E6-XT. But I've learned that specs alone never tell the whole story, so I was quite skeptical. Because the E6 is a very similar camera that I'm quite familiar with, I'm going to compare these two cameras a lot in this review.

Thanks for the review. I have been debating about buying this one.

I highly recommend it. I used to use Flir, but I kicked it to the curb. Everything this reviewer said is on cue. I highly recommend it. I personally have the B10, and just today received the Pocket 2. Pocket 2 is AWESOME. You can even record video with it.

Thank you, Reuben. Informative video, as always.
One additional thought about the built-in battery: Since batteries deteriorate over time, the battery will only last so long. When it no longer holds a decent charge, you cannot replace it. If you can send it to the manufacturer and they will replace it for a reasonable price, great. However, you'll be without camera for a couple of weeks while that happens. If the manufacturer will not replace the battery, you have to throw the whole thing away and buy a new one!
I'm in Arizona, and batteries don't last very long in the heat, so having removable batteries is important here.
If you ever get your hands on it, I'd love to see a review/comparison between the HIKMicro M30 and Flir E8.

I'm also a home inspector. Very nice review. I use the B10. One feature you forgot to mention was the fact that HIKMicro is a 25Hz camera, whereas Flir is a 9Hz camera. If you compare resolutions between Flir and HIKMicro, the Flir is WAY more expensive for the same resolution. The Field of View (FOV) is incredibly important as well, and HIK has a better FOV than Flir. Today, I received my Pocket 2, and I've tried it out. I absolutely LOVE it, and the fact that it can record video as well.

Great review. Thanks for highlighting the cons as well as pros. Most reviews talk only about pros.

I don't know much about the C5, but i can definitely say i'd rather take the HIK over flir

No mention about a very important feature for professional work which Flir has and this one doesnt: thermographic JPEG, this toy camera saves a standard image whereas Flir photos are radiometric and can be analysed in software after you left the customer site, you can add measurement points, temp differences delta t, change palettes, etc. Thermographic jpeg is a must for professional work.

Hi, I'm not an expert in thermal imaging cameras, I would use it for household chores.. I'm undecided between the b01 model with wifi or for €50 more the b10 without WiFi but with the 2mp cam.. which one do you recommend? thank you so much

Sorry for the late reply. I would not recommend the one with wifi. Totally unnecessary.

No, you cannot take videos with this nor the B10. You can only take video with the Pocket 2.

The built-in battery is a deal breaker and that thing will be useless in a couple of years. The UNI-T UTI260B would be a better option.

Hikmicro = CCP made hence to avoid. Flir = US made also to avoid for human rights in China in the case of hikmicro and human rights worldwide in the case of flir. We have to support products made on descent countries like Scandinavian or other non genocidal Asian countries

    • @TerryRGraham

They should regret it because I decided not to buy it over the "planned obsolescence," otherwise known as the nonreplaceable battery, as well as a few other things.

Too funny. Actually, they didn't send it to me. I was just sharing what i bought. But I do believe in 100% honesty. So i would've reported it as such either way.
