    What's up y'all. I'm back with another video and this week's video is about the Nikon Z 28mm f2.8. I just picked it up from Samy's cameras and I was incredibly excited to test it out. I have always needed a small compact lens for fun and lightweight travel and I think this is the perfect fit. In the video I'll tell you why I picked the lens up, pov photography, and my first impressions at the end of the video. So stay tuned and I hope you enjoy. If you did please rate, comment, and subscribe, and thank you for experiencing the world with me today.

    Finally got mine and was able to use it--love it already. Gives a clear, crisp image that’s just a touch wider than 35mm without the need to have lots of foreground detail that 14, 17, or 20mm would require.

    I am considering this lens for street photography. I currently use the 40mm f/2 and it is a fantastic lens. Probably one of my favorite lenses. You are right about Nikon lenses. A lot of people left Nikon after the z6 came out because Nikon was late getting to mirrorless and the z6 wasn't on par with Sony and Canon. The z6 II was only a slight improvement. What those people didn't understand is the z mount is the king of mounts. You can adapt most all other brand lenses. This mount allows the engineers to design lenses better than the older f mount lenses. The new 135mm Plena is an example of that. There's a saying in photography. You date the camera but marry the lenses. But now the third gen cameras are out. Nikon has caught up and possibly passed the competition.

    Have one... probably going to try and sell it. Very good job on being affordable and giving fairly acceptable image quality.... it just turns out 28mm really ain't my cup of focal length.

    Well done man. I appreciate this video. I almost bought the 28 f.28 a couple weeks ago and saw it had the plastic lens mount and it really turned me off, but you saying that it felt really good puts my mind at ease and may have to grab this guy. Hope you are doing well and I really liked this format. Keep up the good work!

      For the price metal lens mount is not happening in this new lens age.

      @@jamesjackson4264 you are probably right. I think personally I would prefer a slightly higher price point with a metal mount, but it probably doesn't matter much in the end.

    • @TheProjectPhotography
      @TheProjectPhotography  Před 2 lety +1

      I did mention this in the video that not all plastic is created equal and some lenses with a metal mount but built with plastic actually don't feel as good. For example, the 24-200mm has a metal mount but is made of plastic and doesn't feel as good as the 28mm. It really just depends. Also I'm glad you enjoyed the format for my first impressions videos. I really like them as well and I think that's how I will continue to do my first impressions moving forward.

    I bought this lens to use on my Z50 as my walk around lens. I like the 42mm perspective and it, as a combination, is not intimidating/invasive to people on the street that I may shoot.

  • @tor2919

    Its an excellent lens. Been using it since New Years. Plastic mount means nothing on a lens this light. Nikon did well spending the cash elsewhere on this lens. Many competitors have external focus unlike this lens. That will have far more impact on durability than the lens mount on a 200 gram lens.

    The all plastic lens construction did not keep me from buying this lens because I have owned a few with mounts that have been made the same way and own them to this day with no problem (and have used them extensively) The combination with My Z Camera makes for a compact lens that can make for a great street experience I use it for the close into the action shots and the 40mm for the stand back experience :) :) :) I also noticed the lenses in your kit and I would suggest the 85mm f1.8 for a great portrait lens it is Amazing !!!!!!!!! Keep shooting :) :)

    I have and love this lens. I am thinking about selling it tho. Only because I have it and the 40mm. Which I like also. Now that the 28-75 is out and at $800 prices I wonder would I enjoy that lens better over the 28/40.

    • @baronsilverton6504
      @baronsilverton6504 Před 2 lety +1

      I would not sell the 40mm f/2 - you could sell the 28mm 2.8 if you get the 28-75 2.8, but the 40mm f/2 is really a special lens that the 28-75 2.8 will not replicate - neither for low light situations nor for character and background separation at 40mm.

    • @jamesjackson4264
      @jamesjackson4264 Před 2 lety

      @@baronsilverton6504 I should have gave more insight. While it is a size difference I do own the 50mm 1.2 and the Nikon f 105 1.4. When it’s time for magic they come out. To be honest outside of size. The 50mm 1.8 is far better than the 40mm. I had the 1.8 before I upgraded. It’s worth the extra $200 short term and long term if you can afford the extra $200. I would urge anybody to wait and get that lens. On exception is video. I just think smaller lens are better for video.

    • @baronsilverton6504
      @baronsilverton6504 Před 2 lety +1

      @@jamesjackson4264 There is no doubt that the 50 1.8 S is a sharper lens and more technically correct than the 40mm f/2 - this was not my point. The 40mm is however significantly smaller and lighter and more fun to walk around with - I have both and have compared. Although not as technically correct in IQ as the 50mm 1,8 S, the 40mm f/2 has a very pleasing image rendition that in some way I prefer - I would say it has more character than the 50mm 1.8 S even though it is clearly the inferior lens from a technical point of view. The 50 1.2 S and the 105 1.4 E lens are both great and I use them all the time for portraiture but these are clearly not walk around lenses.
      Again, for walking around, I find the 40mm just more fun to use than the 50 1.8 S and I like the 40mm focal length better than 50 for this purpose - if its for weddings or other work I take the 50mm 1.8 S over the 40mm - but for me the 40mm has been a great daily shooter - I own every Z prime (except the 0.95 NOCY) and I use them all - this was a specific use case but they are all great and you really cannot go wrong.

    • @jamesjackson4264
      @jamesjackson4264 Před 2 lety

      @@baronsilverton6504 I agree. You. Can’t beat the size. Hence for function and size I was thinking about that 28-75. Cause to your point for a daily I do t need the f2 for blowing out the background. I just want a functional light lens that I can capture what I want. I am carrying around the 28/40 right now. For close to the same price I can do the zoom. And the zoom I can use professional.

    • @baronsilverton6504
      @baronsilverton6504 Před 2 lety +1

      @@jamesjackson4264 Sure - that is a way to see it. I use the 40mm f/2 at night time a lot when I am 'walking around' or with friends so for me the 28-75 2.8 wouldn't be as good - also the 28-75 is much bigger and heavier, which is exactly what I do not want for this use case - but if it works for you then I am sure you can't go wrong.
      Personally, I prefer primes to zooms even for my pro work, but when I use a zoom in that range I use my 24-70 2.8 S which is an amazing lens - probably the best standard range zoom on the market - certainly in the top 3. But, I think we agree, there is very little 'going wrong' when selecting native Z mount lenses - they are simply top of class and they are engineered to work with the Z mount, which is factually the best mount in the market (widest mouth 55mm and shortest flange distance 16mm). I'm sure you'll be happy with the 28-75 2.8.

      I mean it'll be alright you'll get some perfectly fine images, but it doesn't have VR or is a f1.8 so there will definitely be other lenses better suited for a low light street lens. I personally have enjoyed the Nikon z 50mm f1.8s
