    Great video Ron. I recently just purchased a pair of Martin Logan Motion 15i bookshelf speakers and I must say in my room they completely disappear. I'm so blown away by experiencing a AMT tweeter for the first time, I've been searching for this silky smooth butter sound for quite a while and Martin Logan has brought it to my attention.

    Sometimes physics gives you the bird and sometimes it gives you a gift. Following your "place your speakers in the dark" advice, my Yamaha NS-6490s have disappeared. Well, not for my wife - she HATES the placement. So they may physically disappear. But, in the meantime, they've disappeared from an audiophile perspective. It has a lot to do with the room, I suspect.

    Perhaps the key to speakers disappearing is having sound bounce off of rear +/- side walls as it does for live music played indoors. My mirage m3 bipoles (front and rear facing drivers in phase) disappear, you’ve experienced open baffles and I suspect you’ll find dipoles and omnis that do.

    If a speaker fill the room physically , well it is not easy to say it disappears. I always wonder when I see (video) the IRS5 in PS Audio's music room how they can disappear. In all cases you have to close your eyes or dim the light - just want to say that the brain is better supported for that disappearing act when the speaker is small , light is dimmed or you close your eyes.

    Another factor is the recording. With my Zu Soul Supremes with Zu Sub some recordings cause the speakers to disappear and other recordings make them almost painfully apparent.

    To add to this, the Japanese Eclipse speakers vanish as do KEF LS50s. KEF have a great white paper on point source speakers. Removing first reflection points or bring speakers in close helps tremendously.

  • @snowpuppy77

    Very well put. I personally really like it when a speaker disappears. But many of these speakers often have compromises of their own compared to speakers that do not completely disappear. Very important to know what our priorities are when it comes to sound quality especially if we can't spend tens of thousands on a speaker. That is why I went with open baffle because an open large soundstage and imaging is top priority. And I still want powerful bass thrust without having to hear a box. My Dad's Magnepan 3.7i are wonderful but they are out of my price range and too big for my space. The 1.7i are great speakers but did not have the dynamic thrust I want for rock and orchestra. That is why I went with the Spatials as they were a good compromise. That is not to say Spatials are better than the 1.7i because the maggies have their advantages. The Spatials were just better for me and my current room. And I did not want to buy more powerful amplification.

    Dude, you need to hear some Spendor S100s or SP1/2es - wide baffles, no rounded edges, yet somehow they can completely disappear. What I've found makes speakers disappear are low-distortion drivers, well-damped cabinets with no significant resonances over 400Hz, and smart crossovers with proper phasing.

    Can better amplification improve matters, or is it solely down to the speakers (and presumably the room too?)

    • @johnhpalmer6098
      @johnhpalmer6098 Před 5 lety +1

      Mrpostronia, no, amplification won't help them disappear in so much as if a pair of good speakers sound at best "polite", you'll notice it and better amplification will just make them sound better but not to disappear, room and speaker design will though - and as Ron says, the less wide the baffle helps here is being key, less front reflection from the baffle.

    • @Newrecordday2013
      @Newrecordday2013  Před 5 lety

      @@johnhpalmer6098 Yup, John is right about this. Ill say, good tube stuff can help with bringing a little more of that holographic magic but it surely wont make a speaker that CANT disappear, all the sudden vanish. Thanks John!

    • @johnhpalmer6098
      @johnhpalmer6098 Před 5 lety

      Mrpostronia, no, I don't think better amplification will necessarily help with the disappearing act, but rather, it WILL help with the speakers sound by providing what it needs to sound good, proper power, clean power and with enough headroom to handle the dynamics and percussion to give the speakers sparkle, punch or they'll sound polite, if you will. Discovered that with a very good pair of vintage ADS speakers last year. Initially hooked up to a BPC era Sherwood receiver. It had requisite power (60W/Ch, RMS) but they just didn't have the beans necessary to make them shine and they did sound polite, but even then, I discerned that they were very much a better speaker than the early 70's era Sansui kabuki speakers I had been using.
      But room and speaker placement will make a big difference, however bear in mind, some of us have to compromise on that due to size/room layout and our gear and fight with furniture and door placement that is dictated by the room. Audio in and of itself is a series of compromises and much of it is out of our control, other than try to minimize issues where we can.

    • @Newrecordday2013
      @Newrecordday2013  Před 5 lety

      The Room makes a huge difference and depending on speaker positioning in that room, you can take a speaker that struggles with soundstage and make it better, no doubt about that! Will it completely disappear? Well, you saw the video and even though that guy is a camera hog, he sometimes knows what hes talking about! Thanks for watching man!
