  • In this video Greg and Erik mill up Douglas Fir timbers and Erik shares his secret to centering the pith. His method works perfectly almost every time. We milled up the last of our doug fir timbers, but did some clean up so we were able to get some more that will work for our cut list. We have two loads of logs coming in about a month, but are thankful we have these from our property until then.
Did you know we are building a barn out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab last summer and are on a pause while we mill all of the lumber needed for the barn build. We have A LOT of milling in our future.
Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from ‪@BarnGeek‬ . We are excited to build one of his beautiful barns!
    • Why Do We Think WE CAN...
***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
Here is a link to the video that shares the sawmill cover / sawmill shed build from start to finish:
    • Sawmill Cover Build - ...
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
    3 posts in the front
    4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
    Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
    It will have a 3 :12 pitch
    Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
We have shared the entire build!

Eric makes it look so easy, although I imagine it took some time for him to perfect that skill. Thanks for sharing.

Hi, Norm and Kim, Erik definitely has got it down. It’s oddly satisfying to put a log on the mill and “make” something cool.
Hope you had fun in Mexico!! 😁

Eric's method is probably the fastest. Another way is to run the band down to the pith on each end and use the scale. It's pretty quick especially if you don't have a long cantilever past the bunks. Really a great time watching the brothers and family working towards "OUR DREAM IN THE WOODS " How about an update on the Ripper 37s and another teaser on the barn project? Be well and stay safe. 🙏

Hi, Todd! Impressed with the Ripper 37s and will be ordering them again. But going to continue to use my old ones because there’s nothing wrong with them.
Lots going on with the barn project- more of an obsession for me. We were waiting on some fancy rendition from the architect but it looks like we just need to share what we have. I’m guessing that you know it’s going to be a little more than a barn😁

What do you think about Erik's method of centering the pith? We have found it to be pretty spot on. How do you center the pith? Hope this is helpful and hope you enjoy this video! 😁

I heard something the other day. You grow where you put your energy. You’ve all grown a lot in the last year, in your milling and your content creation. Makes me think there is a lot more good stuff to come from your channel. I’m enjoying it!

I like that! Yes - lots of energy put into where we’re at and it feels good. Lots more to come- one day at a time. Thanks for watching! 😁

Eric, that is a great way to accurately center the pith in an efficient manner. Blessings to you guys.

Thank you! Feels good to mark some timbers off of the list! 😁

The simplest explanation I could have given is when you level it horizontally also level it vertically, so when you take the bark edge cuts off you'll can still have the pith centered . Maybe a little clearer?
    Keep on milling. Beautiful lumber❤

Hi! Sounds right to me. It is definitely worth your time to take the pith into account. Thanks for watching! 😁

Great method to center the pith. Yes, it may take a little bit more time but it will give you the center dead on. Marking the planned beam around the pith makes it so that you can get the bonus material cuts down to the right spot and keep the beam perfect. I'm betting the new power height motor helps get the maximum out of the log.
    Thanks for the video.

Hi, Mike! Definitely worth the time to get that pith centered - I can’t say all our Timbers are perfect but at least we try. I milled yesterday and the new accu lift is working great. Milled all day and didn’t pull my tape measure out to measure the butt at all. Thanks for watching! 😁

Yes, we were super happy it made it through the winter without any cracks! 😊

Howdy y’all- Eric has come up with a good way to center everything. I do something similar- I lay a board across the rails and measure up from that and use a hydraulic Jack on the tip to get the center even with the butt end. Take care and God bless

Great job ! Between the two of you the cut list is getting smaller :) You have some big pine in your area, It's to bad some of the Fir is past it's due date, You'll have some good firewood piled by the time your done :)

Thank you! We are so lucky to have such a beautiful forest surrounding us! A few of the logs are past their prime but at least we are using what we can. Thanks for watching! 😁
