Personally one of my favorite lots to turn into a rental for storytelling purposes is the Honeydew Fields lot from Britechester. It's a cheap house with everything to take care of one's needs at home, and it allows an aspiring uni student to conveniently access both college campuses while deciding which one to attend.

The penthouse rental lot is one I wouldn't have thought of! Probably because I still think of it as an apartment and not "a house that just happens to be on top of an apartment building." XD Personally, I like making that one private island lot near the volcano a rental -- it really lets you live out your private tropical island fantasies so well!

My favorite lot to turn into a rental is that one house in the Spice District of San Myshuno. Thanks for the other wonderful ideas, Petey! You always inspire me to expand my gameplay in ways I would have never thought to.

I have a Lot on the Gallery some might like for this. It's called Tropika Shelter. I built it on the Caldera Camp lot in Sulani and it's a completely open structure. It's a thatched roof supported entirely by pillars and uses fences instead of walls. Living there almost feels like camping, and it's also off the grid.

i've literally had sims living in 3 of these lots, and I'll definitely plan a trip to the lot next to the secret lot entrance to catch lotta angel fish

I switch 5-1-2 Kiyomatsu over to 5-1-1's location and then switch that lot into a restaurant, as I am usually always down for more eateries and the place is good for some Japanese food. And makes for a good leap off point into the winter activities, seeing as it's right in front of the bunny slopes.
I just wanted to say this was so HELPFUL!! I really miss the Sims 3 festivals from the seasons pack and feel that their isn't enough to distinguish the game unless you play round robin style, but his idea has put new life into my game, now I am adding rental homes, restaurants and retails to each of the worlds so that my sims can buy the local costumes' and eat local food.

I'm going to do that as well. One other thing to consider if you're going to do that is only have your sims to worlds they either live in or are vacationing in. That way you'd actually have a reason to use those rental lots.
One of my sims got trapped in the bedroom in that house in Tartosa when she went there with her SO. What was going to be a proposal weekend ended in me having to travel back home so she wouldn’t die in there. Needless to say, I redecorated that room 😂

I like to have at least 1 rental lot per world since I like to stay in 1 world typically and only visit the others if I'm playing rotationally or have my main sim family go on vacation and since my last save got corrupted (RIP) I'm going to redo everything in the game and make my own personal private save file(since I use a ton of cc and don't want to burden other players with that lol) Right now I'm on the townie makeover stage but this is a great reference for when I start building and/or placing lots thank you so much

I need to send my seims on more vacations, this is great
In one of the save files I'm currently working on, I have multiple households that I'm playing rotationally with, and one of those households has a Sim who's a travel journalist (basically I have him in the Art Critic career but I send him on vacation often and then I pretend his Art Critic work is him evaluating the arts and culture of the places he's visited). I'd been working on building at least one rental home in almost every world for this Sim and his family to visit on their vacations, but turning existing lots into rental homes would be so much easier than building from scratch. That said, I already have a rental home build on the Sapphire Shores lot in Sulani, so I don't really feel any need to evict the Hoapili family just so my Sims can have their dream island vacation. And I've already renovated 5 Cobblebottom Street for another branch of the travel journalist's extended family to live in (and yes, part of that was adding a fireplace). And I already have Sims living in Parkside Place in that save file too. Also, the travel journalist's household lives in San Myshuno, so I don't really feel any need to have them go on vacation in San Myshuno. But turning Yuma Heights, Pier Palace, and Hound's Head into rental lots for my travel journalist Sim and his family to visit is a brilliant idea and I'm totally going to do it. Thanks!

Nelly! I would say San Myshuno is my fave :D.
My sims are always broke, I make lots of quick what I call airbnb specials and throw around debug landscaping to keep costs down
Oh snap! I feel like they haven’t fixed the bug where many of the rental lots won’t let you turn to residential without messing the whole save/household
I didn’t even know that was a bug, have you made a report on it? They’ll probably ask for your save file to help investigate it. Make sure it’s not a mod that changes/affects how venue types work because that could be the issue

Some of us like sending sims on vacation
They originally worked because they used to be specifically for the vacation worlds, which you can only get to if you take a vacation. Rental lots in other worlds feel a little useless now since you can just go to that world any time. One thing you could do is make a self-imposed rule where you can only go to a world if you either live there or stay in one of the rental lots. That way you'd have more of a use for them.
