- During the week of August 25, 1835, the world was treated to a fantastic story of scientific discoveries by the famous British astronomer, Sir John Herschel. He had discovered life on the moon or so the readers of The New York Sun were told, in a series of articles now known as the Great Moon Hoax. This is the story of how one newspaper fooled the world.

So that's how to fool the world! Although still related to space, this video is a bit different to what I normally talk about, but I hadn't heard of this bizarre story until recently and it blew me away! We laugh at the people of that period for believing in such a hoax but I think people are just as easy to fool today. There a lot of TikTok’s and CZcamsrs spreading misinformation all the time. It’s a reminder to never trust one source. Look at it from all angles and seek information from sources not trying to drum up attention.

This story has me wondering about the media and communications systems like telecom and the internet. I am wondering how dangerous it is to have these now-critical systems managed by profit-driven companies. Media, telecom, and the internet are all about the gathering and exchange of information. Should the gathering and exchange of information be regulated by shareholders, or by citizens, or by no one at all?
And who fact-checks the fact-checkers these days?

I bet no Russian doubts they went to the moon! I'm not sure that Americans are a good landmark. After all, they thought The War of the Worlds was real instead of a book and radio play - some committing suicide because they thought earth was being invaded - something which still astonishes me 80 years later!

I reckon they saw something up there, long before they sent men. They probably did throw in some dodgy footage to cover up what was really there.
