  • Drive It Day is a nationwide scheme designed to encourage owners of classic cars, vans, motorcycles & other transport to take them out and raise the profile of vehicle preservation here in the UK, a sector that is worth £billions to the economy. Road runs, shows and breakfast meets take place across the country. On the same day, the 2022 outing for The Cheshire Run also took place, where classic lorries take to the roads of Cheshire and North Shropshire, with a mid-route halt at the Midway Truckstop near Whitchurch.
As the weather was so good, we were expecting a great turnout for both events, Drive It Day and The Cheshire Run. We weren't to be disappointed. The Anglia was pressed into service and we headed over to our friends' garage close to the Midway Truckstop, where we parked up and unpacked our cameras ready for the day's vehicle sightings.
Many many fantastic old lorries were seen, and mixed in with them in the parking areas, and on the roads nearby were all manner of interesting old cars taking part in Drive It Day 2022 really adding to our morning. As outings go, they don't get much better.
Once the lorries had left we ambled home, then later headed out (again in the Anglia, now that the starter motor is behaving again) for a family meet-up, so we did our "bit" for the Drive It Day initiative.
Let me know in the comments if you undertook any special outings to support Drive It Day in some way, or indeed if you took part in the classic lorry run and see your vehicle in this vid.
Thanks very much for watching - comments, subs, likes welcomed as always. To see all the vids on the channel, please see the following pages:

The trouble with being 80 is that I remember most of these vehicles on the road. Thanks for the memories, keep tinkering.

Absolutely Awesome Content, Filming and Soundtrack. As for favourites.
1, The ERF EC Olympic on the Jake Brake.
    2, The ERF E 14 facelift.
3, The Ford Cargoes, all of them. I drove so many hard miles in them with the Ford 6.0 litre, 6.2 litre and 6.0 litre turbo and they were just so strong and always got you home. Definitely a Classic now.
4, Mickey Mouse Foden. My Uncle Jim, God Rest Him, drove one in 1988, a 6 wheel tipper alongside an early 1980s Foden and did as much work as the modern one did every day.
5, Foden S80 with those magical headlight's. Our local Mother's Pride ran one an Artic. The Sunblest Bakery bought an ERF with a Gardner 240 Straight 8 around 1979 1989. An amazing thing.
Not forgetting the Foden's cousin of course. That Peterbilt looked stunning and sounded like a big Cummins 14 litre.

Great Video again very enjoyable over breakfast, our local classic car meet seems to ave turned into cheque book resto's though which are not to my taste, but each to their own.

    Fantastic!
Best selection of trucks and lorries in action
I’ve see for a long time
    Even a DAF 3300!
I worked for a Leyland Daf dealership in the early 1980’s
I saw all the old vehicles going back years and years as we still had parts available for everything under British Leyland even
Austin, Morris post war vehicles that were partly wooden in construction
Roadrunners, Sherpa vans and even Routemaster buses on occasion
Then there were the current ( for then) vehicles
These Leyland DAF vehicles are part of history themselves now
    2600,3300 and the mighty 3600
    Usually an ‘eight legger’
My favourite was as a mighty 3600 rescue truck

So nice to see all of those lorries. I love that huge tanker though I have nowhere to hide it! I think you are right about the drivers of the day. They would have just seen them as tools of the trade but yes they would have been a handful to drive. When i was younger we lived near a hill though you could not see it from our house you could definitely hear the lorries 'screaming' up the hill, even the odd missed gear change, though that didn't happen too often. Thanks for sharing this video Rick. 👍👍👍

Thanks, great lorry video. Strange that in South Africa we call them trucks, and in the USA a truck is something else to private users. I remember Leyland, Bedford, Albion and Ford trucks of the late 50's and 60's. Many of these festured in your video(s)! We had a forward control Thames Trader tipper in the family in the late 60's. The one with the small narrow bonnet with it's own grille. I have seen only one or two in your recent videos. They seem to be scarce. Ours had a petrol 6 cylinder and was very heavy on fuel. We also had a long nosed 3 to 4 ton Thames which had the a 4 cyl. diesel engine which is the same as that of the Fordson tractor of the era. I remember taking a load of sheep to auction in it. Flat out on a level tar road in our Karoo semi desert area near Queenstown it would work up to a touch over 50 mph. Also did many trips driving my uncle's Ford D0807. This went well with a diesel slant 4 cyl, think it was a 4.3 or 4 6 litre. Had decent torque to move a 4 ton load in the hilly area on our coast at East London. Hope to see some examples of these lorries in your future videos. Thanks for the memories!

I'm more into cars than commercials but this video certainly made me smile at these lovely old Commercials. They were all lovely, but I think the Shell/BP Scammel has to be my favourite. Nice seeing the ERF's too as I went for a tour around the Sandbach factory during the late 60's. My favourite cars were the Zodiac, Avenger GL and Viva DL together. I worked in a Vauxhall and Chrysler dealers up to 1976 so I can't tell you if there was an anniversary version of the Avenger, I certainly don't remember hearing about one. I must say that the Anglia has a nice clean look in it's linseed finish. Thanks for sharing.

You are correct about those old lorries not being easy to drive. No power steering, cabs hot and noisy and double clutching. It wasn’t till the late sixties when my father got a brand new ergo cabbed AEC when lorries became a little more bearable.

Thanks for another great video . The thumbnail shows a mk2 Zodiac. So I thought it was mainly cars. So it was a bit of a surprise that there were so many lorries, ( that I'm not an avid spotter of). but I'm glad you did as they bought back a lot of memories of my childhood in the 60s and later the 70s. I started with my dad learning bricklaying and the London Brick Company lorries that used to deliver the " Fletton " bricks were a common sight. I can't remember what make they were but there was one of them (a tanker I think) in the video.

As a kid, I nearly got run over by most of them lorrys. I was a bit of a road hazard whilst crossing the road. I did also drive a Ford D.1000 and a Bedford t k for 7 years around a timber yard. There were also a Cortina estate m5 ,a Hillman Avenger I had for a few years which I had had painted, black bottom red top and black roof. Also drove a number of Land Rover's for 20 years. So yes...another good video. 👍
