- Leyland, ERF, Volvo & other classic lorries congregated at the Midway Truck Stop in Shropshire for another Sunday morning gathering recently, so we sped over to view the lorries arriving and driving away.
Trucks from manufacturers such as Leyland, ERF, Atkinson, Volvo, Scania and others turned up and made for an impressive sight (and sound!). A few of the vehicles we'd seen before but there were also a few new "faces" in the line-ups of vehicles. Two of my favourites were the green ERF with twin-steering front axles, and a wonderful old Leyland Beaver lorry. I was fortunate enough to grab a few minutes with the owners of both these fine old British lorries, and I've included our chats in this video (hence the slightly longer video duration this time - I hope you find these brief interviews interesting). Thanks to everyone who brought their lorries out to play, and especially to the owners of the Leyland and the ERF for taking time out to tell me more about their vehicles' histories.
If you're also a fan of classic commercial vehicles (including vans and pickups), please say hello in the comments. Feedback on the video welcomed as always.

Great video. The numbers after the EC on the ERFs are relayed to engine size. Ours is the cream EC14 (14 Litre Cummins), the EC11 is the M11 Cummins etc. Dads not impressed he missed a gear on camera haha
Ahhh I see, thanks for watching (sorry to your dad!!)
Another fascinating video thank you. What a wonderful array of beautiful lorries. The ex health service Leyland must be my favourite. (The MX5 wheels look good too.)
Thanks for watching (the MX5's wheels were standard fit on this edition, and I agree I think they suit it)
Nice collection of lorries 👍👍👍. My favourite was the Leyland Clydesdale tattie wagon
Good to see so many old trucks out and about and such a nice day
That guy you spoke to said he had so many trucks
It would be good to see his place ,I’m wondering if he has a big shed with them all in 👍👍
Thanks for This Post, Eaton twin splitter Geare Box for me . Keep Safe 😊👍
Wow, thanks so much for this video. Loads of beautiful classics for us to see, and I would never see them if it wasn't for you. My Father drove many D Series in the early 70's, and AEC Marshall 6 wheelers.
Fabulous video....I have great memories of riding in the cab of Fodens and Atkinson's in the 60s with my Dad...😊
I remember the mobile X Ray unit calling at work to give us a chest X Ray to detect TB. I worked for Philips electronics 57 till 91 our transport subsidiary London Carriers ran a fleet of Leyland Octopus with trailer to transport TV tubes, overall length was I think 56 ft.
I went to school with lad who's Dad was the last professional signwriter in Latchford in the 80's. He retired a few years ago. Alan Povey. Wonderful artist his work can still be seen round Warrington. PS I like FG's TK's and Ford D-series (But you know that already) Great video to start the week. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
hi there, great video, always pleased to see an AEC as i used to work there, !
@34:00 The Guinness advertising Iveco truck - the 0% alcohol refers to recently launched Guinness Zero-alcohol stout. Available in cans over here (Ireland !!) though haven't seen it on Draught yet. Brilliant sound from that ERF EC14 (38:30) - even made the dog here sit up and look !!
The owner of the Leyland you interviewed is my erlierest recollection of one of the first lorries my father drove for BRS in the early fifties.a Leyland Octopus 8 wheeler flat bed. And the last in 1969 a brand new AEC ergo cabbed low loader
Great video👌🏼
Some really nice lorries and that MkI Escort looked nice at a glance
Yep, it was car number 29 as shown in the Tour of Cheshire rally vid recently 👍
Back in the day I worked at a Ford dealership.Along with cars they also sold lorries and I have driven a few of the D type lorries.
I don't understand the reasoning for the 20 mph speed limit. Beautiful trucks.
That was the imposed speed limit set by the Government for all trucks over 3tons unladen weight. Trucks under 3 tons unladen weight were allowed to travel at 30mph.
@@michaelkeen5010 Post War, why? That would be detrimental to getting the economy up and running. In my opinion, very bad decision. Cheers
@@paulseabrook8179 but don’t forget that back in the postwar period trucks were quite basic and not that high powered, 100-150 bhp to haul 24 tons, larger 4 axle truck often hauling 2 axle trailers, limited braking power, and top speeds of 35-40mph if they were able to get away with it on roads that were often dual carriageway at best that went through numerous towns and villages. No power steering, non-synchromesh gearboxes and few trucks had heaters etc. etc. So 20mph was deemed a safe top speed in that era. Those trucks under 3 tons ulw had an extra 10mph to play with.
Another gud 'un
Great vid but cant understand why the Irish registered Daf wasnt part of the meet.
I might be wrong but I think it was part of what appeared to be a road run of Irish-registered vehicles also in the area, thanks for watching
wonder if they are related to Cadwallader transport oswestry
Beaver😂😂😂
Very badly presented! Video only good for those who don`t want to know anything about the vehicles themselves. Everytime the guy hears or sees a new arrival he starts running around like a blue assed fly trying to chase it. complete mophead of a production.
Thanks for watching, sorry it wasn't up to your impeccable standards
