  • What can I say this movie was amazing. It was really cute and funny in the start, well at least funny to make jokes about, to being such a roller coaster of emotions. It really was a beautiful story about love and I am glad I have finally watched it.

Such a great movie, I've seen it numerous times and I'm sure you will also. It was nominated for 8 academy awards, won 3 and it was a shocker when it didn't win the Oscar for best picture. Variety Magazine headline the next day: "Lo and behold, “Crash” prevailed over “Brokeback Mountain” in one of the most controversial best picture wins in Oscars history".

This movie wrecked me. Made me cry the most out of ANYTHING else. The ending is open for interpretation, when Lureen talked about Jack's death over the phone, it could mean two things, either Jack died the same way Ennis had in mind (due to his internalized homophobia and the horrible scene he saw as a kid of the brutal murder of the gay couple) or, he actually died by the tire. both equally sad and frustrating.
to me, the "jack i swear" was an expression of regret, if only he was alive, he would've gave him the life he wanted and would've faced his fears with him...but it's too late. ugh they really need to give us a happy gay movie for once! 😭 they're all incredibly sad.

Yeah why can't they give us a happy gay movie, that is still equally as deep and beautiful as the sad ones. Yes the Jack I swear things was really amazing way too end it I think, I'm annoyed I didn't google it just as I finished so I could learn about what it meant and give my own take on it (but I think I was just too sad too think haha).

I agree. I think oversexualizing anything is immature. But in this context, it's downright offensive. Jack and Ennis live in a society where they could face derision and violence for showing basic human emotions. It's terrifying for them and it's heartbreaking. Especially when they had to say "I'm not queer" (it irritates me when ppl scoff or joke about that btw. Why is it funny thaf they are terrified of the label that is demonized and punishable by death?)
I do joke when things can get sad, basic defensive mechanism. But I'd NEVER sink so low to make sexual comments when ppl are going through so much internal conflict, isolation and pain. Like really?there's a time and a place.
Luckily, this was taken more seriously by the end, but the first half of this reaction still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I nearly checked out three times. Once during the intro. Again after 8 minutes. And yet again after 12 more minutes (the half-way point). But I guess inertia set in, and I did actually make it through to the end. I don't mean to be hateful, but I sort of kind of feel like I maybe want my 40 minutes back. It was just too silly for me.
About a month ago Ethan replied in another thread, "By the end it was practically unable to talk due to how emotional the movie made me." I'm guessing that started around the 30-minute mark when Alma confronted Ennis in the kitchen at Thanksgiving dinner. There was a noticeable shift at that point.
On one level, the movie is the tragic story of a clandestine long-term love affair. On a deeper level, the movie is about the effects of hatred toward gay men. Think about it. All four of the principle characters suffered terribly. At bottom all of that suffering was brought about by a generalized hatred of "queers." The word 'gay' was not spoken even once in the whole movie. Theirs was a love that dared not speak its name. You can't just say, "Why don't they divorce their wives and ride off into the sunset together?" That wasn't even an available option for them. And it wasn't Ennis who filed for divorce anyway; it was Alma.

I always wondered if Jack actually died the way Lureen says or the way that Ennis pictured it. Is it Lureen trying to cover up the “shame” of Jack’s love with Ennis? Did she find it out like Alma did? Or did it really happen like that and Ennis is just imagining that Jack died that way because of his intense trauma from seeing the body of the dead man accused of being gay his father showed him as a child. Ennis was always so scared that is what would happen to them if they went together. Is he imagining that Jack got what Ennis thought would happen? His worst fear coming true? Something he could have prevented if he just faced his fear and went with away with him? We will never know.

I always assumed Jack was beaten to death for being gay and left on the side of the road. Most likely the story was how the people involved along with local law enforcement covered up the murder. Lurleen probably knew the truth and why she was reciting the cover-up story in such a matter-of-fact way with no emotions.

"I swear" is a common expression of angry frustration. Or at least it was when I was growing up, which was when this movie was set (1963-83). I remember my mother saying "I swear" quite often, and when she said it, you knew not to push her. You can't beat them "I swear"s. It's intense, but don't try to make it deep 'cause it's not. It doesn't have any real content. But given Ennis's personality, it's about as articulate as he could be right then. That closing line is so moving because Ennis sums up everything he has felt about Jack in two words--an expression with no meaning, only feeling.

    • @elleryharper8030
      @elleryharper8030 Před 11 měsíci +2

I couldn't believe the title "it went from comedy to tragedy" uh, comedy shouldn't even be in the same sentence as brokeback mountain. The first half of the reaction is immature and makes my skin crawl a little. It's no different than when straight ppl oversexualized and mocked this movie for years when it was released. These are real ppl's experiences and to not take it seriously is severely dehumanizing. And it's also disrespectful to the actors. Imagine being so dedicated, passionate vulnerable with your performance just for ppl to mock or oversexualize it . And it's disrespectful for the writers, who did a great job with the script. The jokes aren't okay just because it came from a queer person's mouth. It's still out of line.
Luckily, this was taken more seriously by the end, but this is a reaction i cannot rewatch. Other reactions to this movie has great rewatchability because it was treated with the respect and maturity this movie deserves.

@@elleryharper8030 that is exactly why I said that's it's "sad".... Homophobes mocked this movie for years and made it into some kind of comedy.... I'm quite young, but I heard older gay people talking about how back then in theatres straight people were constantly laughing even at serious scenes and made it into some kind of comedy movie because for them gay people just existing is comedy.... And to think this previlaged gay guy is no different than them, it's so heartbreaking....

@@Rash23215 it is sad. I'm young as well, and i didn't even know straight ppl stayed and laughed in the theatre. That's so messed up. I only heard about the straight ppl that either stormed out after the sex scene. Or straight ppl crying at then end. But to hear them stay and laugh? Jesus, i can't imagine the pain of hearing, practically mocking your own existence. And laughing at the irrational hatred that society holds that can end in your own torture or death.
It's insane that Heath ledger, a straight man, showed more maturity and respect than this reactor. Heath didn't let his own friends joke about the movie. And he turned down performing at the oscars because of an immature gay joke. And back then, in 2005, there was less representation, and gay jokes was more prevelant in media. It was so normalized that it's sickening. But STILL, Heath knew it was wrong and immature to partake in the mockery, even if "it wasn't meant to be offensive."

@@Rash23215 yeah, Jake was mature about it too. I guess Heath sticks out more in my mind because i heard more of his mature takes on this movie in his interviews. Especially about him disregarding claims that he was brave for taking the role, and him not politicizing this movie. And him saying this movie is purely a statement of love. And also, Jake actually intended to perform at the oscars, thinking the gay joke was "all in good fun" but Heath adamantly said no. Jake admitted Heath made him take this more seriously.I'm really glad he did learn from that and how he loved Heath for his maturity. And that comment of Jake saying how ennis and jack were basically straight guys falling in love made me wince a tiny bit. But besides that, i like his other interviews and his dedication to the movie
Those two were truly ahead of their time. I'm glad they were so dedicated and respectful with this movie. I mean, they did the bare minimum but who else was meeting the bare minimum? Most ppl's reaction to this was not only insulting but embarrassing as well
