"It's been 40 days and 40 nights in the desert... what's a fella with a Messianic complex gonna do?"
"40" at the 40th - the final song, and we called it. Front and center at the final U2○UV show, I immediately started chanting the chorus to "40" after the "last" song, and the crowd around me joined in. From the look on Bono's smiling face and Adam pointing at us, we surprised them before they had a chance to surprise us. Then Edge and Adam switched guitars and they closed out the 40th and final show with "40," something U2 would do 40 years ago on the War tour, accompanied by us chanting the chorus for possibly the longest time ever - almost 4 minutes.
God bless you, lads. Thank you for these Songs and Experience. God willing, we hope to see you on the road in 2 years with the new album to tour. Thank you Bram for your service and "safety net." And most of all, get good and well soon, Larry. God bless U2. ❤️

MY LETTER TO U2-1987
I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono!
I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage!
I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations.
Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year!

I was NOT going to miss the Final Show...this song was chilling and I will take the memories of this show to my grave. I get chills every time I watch "40" at this show. Yes I cried like a baby....you had to be there.

Hats off to the OG fan for manifesting this performance. This 80's U2 fan thanks you sir. I walked out of the Meadowlands Arena in '85 & '87 singing this song all the way to the parking lot. Ah the memories.
Fox Theatre, Detroit, MI 1985. Everyone in the lobby singing this. I get chills up and down my spine just thinking about it.
Wow. We used to sing that one all the back to the parking lot in Massachusetts back in the 80s.

Remember when I visited a concert in a stadium in Rotterdam in 1987, we went to the central station after the concert. While waiting for our connection every platform was singing: ‘ how long…..’. Magical.
The could only be one song to end this concert. The song that ended all concerts from the start.
Incredible! Thanks for sharing. Brings back flood of memories of being at RFK Stadium, DC 1987, Bono dislocated his shoulder, it was raining, and the mob exiting kept singing this, never stopping, shoving into the Metro entrance, etc, epic.

Beautiful, thanks. I remember leaving MSG 4/1/85 and everyone going down the escalators still singing this, and those queues take forever at MSG, then spilling out onto 7th Ave. and still, “ how loooong, to sing this song!” It was magic, something I’ll always remember.

As far as I can tell this is the only song where Adam and Edge switch instruments. Edge on bass. Adam on guitar. I’ve been a fan of the band since 1983 and I didn’t notice it until I was watching back the Vertigo concert DVD from Chicago.
When they recorded the song, they had about an hour left of studio time, and they didn't want to waste it. Adam had already left, which is why Edge wrote and played the bass part. That's why they've always switched instruments performing it live.

When they recorded 40, Adam had already left the studio, so Edge wrote the bassline. As such, they have always switched guitars when playing it live, going back to the War tour.
