What was in fashion in 1934? Comedy, con men, Orry-Kelly gowns, Busby Berkeley production numbers and in their only screen pairing, two of cinema's greatest stars: William Powell and Bette Davis. The story whisks audiences off to Paris with a fashion sharpie (Powell) and a designer (Davis) who hope to bootleg the hottest haute couture and flood New York with knockoffs. The two stars make larceny seem like great fun. And Berkeley's numbers are astonishing. Gorgeous girls wearing little more than ostrich plumes form a Web of Dreams, Venus with Her Galley Slaves and The Hall of Human Harps, which prompted one indignant mother to write an article titled I Don't Want My Daughter Growing Up to Be a Human Harp.
    Directed By William Dieterle
Starring William Powell, Bette Davis, Frank McHugh

Not my genre but I’ll watch almost anything from the WB from the golden era and William Powell! An actor I absolutely adore

Bette Davis said she hated being tarted up for this movie and refused to be afterward.
I still think she looks great even though it wasn't her thing.

*** Fashions of 1934 is a lively and elegant musical with musical numbers master Busby Berkeley and many beautiful women. William Powell was a great actor. It is the film, the skin of a bold and unscrupulous seducer. Powell manages the feat of leaving Bette Davis in the background, with its crisis of humor and jealousy. The actress complained about the appearance imposed by the studio, similar to Greta Garbo. Although beautiful, Bette curiously seems to clash with the rest of the cast, fun and cheerful.

Has anyone ever read or do you know where we can find the article written by the irritated mother entitled “I don’t want my daughter growing up to be a human harp?”
