There are a lot of different types of fishing knots out there on the market, but with that being said, when it comes to fishing fluorocarbon fishing line, the best knot is the double pitzen.
I have fished a lot of different knots over the years and many of them I would break off from time to time...that is not the case with this knot. I have literally never broke it. It is truly stronger than any other knot I have found!
BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

    Ty-
I wanted to thank you profusely for introducing me to this knot. Since I have been using it, I have never went back to using anything else. This knot is so good that when I hooked a rock a few hours ago fishing on the Snake River from the shore, that when I pulled really hard to dislodge my bait, the jig ended up breaking from the hook instead of the line tie because it was so strong. Keep up all your great fishing tips. I really think between you, Matt Stefan and Matt and Tim from TacticalBassin you guys are simply the best out there giving their subscribers true value from the content you guys supply. Keep up the great work!!👍🏻🙂

This knot is the shiz. Been using it a few years. Always thought it was called the Shaw Grizby knot. An added benefit is that the direction of the tag end acts as a hook keeper if you slide your plastic over the knot. Sometimes I use glue to make the tag ends a little stiffer for this purpose. On the downside, this knot catches a lot of weeds if not covered with plastic. If I’m fishing around cheese I’ll switch to a Trilene since the tag on the knot points toward the lure.

Knot knowledge is great, but knowing what they're actually for and how they work is more important. No knot is all around "superior" to all other knots, but several of them are superior for their correct application than many others.
Also, fun fact, most people tying a Palomar do it incorrectly because they don't have their line laid out correctly when they pull it. The failed tie will get you by just fine for the majority of fishing applications, but when tied correctly is way stronger than the failed version most people are doing.
Glad to see some coverage of knot anatomy going on in your videos.

Something most people don't understand about high end flourocarbons, some mono's and co polymers is the extreme low friction surface finish on them. When you wet lines like these when tightening knots and hitches it creates a huge amount of friction that can cause a lot of line damage as the surfaces moving over each other effectively stick/weld together. Best example would be trying to move two sheets of glass with water between them vs two dry pieces. It's worth trying out tying your knots/hitches without wetting them, high gloss finish on the line is a possible indicator they will tighten up better dry.

The strongest and easiest line-to-lure knot of all time is the Palomar Knot. I HAVE...on dozens of occasions at outdoorsman shows, gotten a Palomar Knot to hold 100% line strength when tested with the pull-scales at the fishing line company booths. This one guy at a Stren fishing line booth years ago was teaching people how to properly tie the Improved Clinch Knot and when he was done, I took the line, ran one end through the eye, formed a loop and ran the tag end back through the eye and tied a simple overhand knot with the loop and passed the lure through the loop after. Then wetted the knot, cinched it and clipped the tag end. When he put it on the the pull scale, the line broke and the knot held at 100%. Mr. Stren couldn't believe his eyes. He did the test himself and then he tried tying three more Palomar Knots, tested them and got the same result. Mr. Stren said "Thank you for teaching me that!" and went to tell his other Mr. Stren buddies about what I just showed him.

I was trolling crankbaits for walleye or bass and the monster hit, i slammed the moter in nutral and i could not turn the thing. I tightened the drag and we had a 20 second stalemate with him taking line inch by inch. I losened drag a tad and he just took off again, i was running out of line so i tightened a little more snd after three drag takes, the line just snspped. Left me with a curled piece of line at the end. I have a 45.5" pike to my PB but this was a new type of beast. Lol

I really don't know why people don't use the locked blood knot, it's the highest knot strength with simplicity, I've used it for a couple decades and fished everything from 3lb-130lb and never had it fail, my father used it for decades before me with the same success. The only time I don't use it is when I don't want to tie a leader knot and I've got enough strength in my setup to allow a lower knot efficiency at the hook because the locked blood knot is stronger than all jointing knots bar the fg which I can do following steps but I feel it's not needed as realisticly no one is holding onto 80lb braid to 130lb leader with enough force to break it unless there's line damage somewhere so the extra 5%or so knot strength the fg gives over the albright doesn't make up for the extra time taken.
Also before someone comes on saying they can please just don't, there's a reason why kingfish and samsonfish charters usually have their set ups tied to the boat with rope, I'm a big strong guy too but I've also got commonsense, if you don't believe me then tie your 80lb combo to a car and lock the drag up and have the car slowly pull away, you're getting pulled way before the line breaks.

@@butterytoast4836 only thing I don’t like about the Trilene Knot is when you cinch, especially with fluorocarbon, the loop through the eye has a lot of friction. Fluorocarbon doesn’t like friction and heat.. If I do tie it, I like to tie it in reverse like a reverse clinch, which is a little harder to keep the loop placed right with the Trilene knot. They just cinch up better in the reverse, and tests have show the reverse clinch method is stronger than the standard.. Whatever works best for you is what you should use, it’s double SDJ for me.

    @morganyoder4277 Před rokem +3

From a standpoint of knot testing the palomar is stronger than the doubled pitzen on a slow straight pull, but when you don’t cinch a palomar near to the breaking point before using it, it will burn itself as it tries to fully cinch the slack you left and then break because burning creates a weak point. Also if you do snap hooksets the palomar is more susceptible to breaking because it is a high pressure knot that doesn’t spread force out over many wraps like a low pressure high wrap cinch knot. If you set on tight line a palomar will serve you better. The double pitzen or any other cinching knot is a safety measure that tests out a little bit weaker but absorbs shock more easily for anglers who crack the whip on slack often. The only time I use something other than a palomar is on heavy baits like swimbaits which if you were to backlash puts massive loads on a knot, I’d rather disperse the force more with a 7 oz bait even if the palomar is heavily cinched because of how much force is going on.

@@progradepainting3755 for the most part I’ve found the palomar on finesse and moving baits to do really well for me which is all low pressure so the issue of breaking from a slack line hookset is negligible. On heavier baits I like to tie an improved trilene with three wraps around the eye(uses theories from the AG chain knot) because it cinches more tightly than any other knot and tests out higher than a majority of cinching knots. I did some individual testing and sometimes it even beats the palomar.

There's a lot of line stubs pointing back at the rod when you're done. Those stubs will collect grass and weeds on the retrieve. I add one step and run all those ends back throgh the loop just above the hook's eye. Makes the size of the knot a bit larger but, less to catch weeds on the retrieve.

It's definitely a strong, reliable knot but it's a weed collector fishing from the bank more so than other knots due to 3 tag ends facing forward using fluorocarbon or copolymer line. Fishing in open water it's a great knot. I should try the knot on straight braid the tags ends will fold back. Nice video, thanks!

Man I had an absolute heartbreak this past weekend at lake lbj in Texas. Flipping a jig underneath an concrete dock had an absolute giant hit my jig. Set the hook, got her to the boat and at the last second she took off hard and just snapped my line. Had to be at least a 7-8 lber. Went from the Palomar to the double pitzen right then and there and got a 5.2 the next morning on the water. Not the giant i lost but still an awesome bass to land.

The double Pitzen is a super strong knot and I use it for large swim baits, but if you are breaking the Palomar knot at the knot instead of the line, you are still tying it wrong. With the Palomar knot you have to MAKE SURE THE LINES DO NOT CROSS. If they do,,,,it will break.
