For as goofyballs as this movie is, I do appreciate the council of aliens is actually a bunch of different kinds of goofy looking aliens instead of one costume fifty times.

I honestly was too charmed to laugh at them
It's also nice that the distributor left the Japanese character names and didn't anglicize them in the dub.
Before Prince of Space, before Space Chief, there was this guy.
If you cover up the bottom of your screen, you can almost imagine this was an actual MST3K ep.
And, surprisingly, he has more dignity.

@@steveharvey2102 I am not sure. I know that the TV version of Planet Prince (Prince of Space) got a reboot movie recently, but no idea on Super Giant's popularity outside of being knocked off by others.
The number of shots that are just closeups of our hero flying stoically while questioning his career decisions is truly astounding.
Is it just me or does Starman's costume looks sorta like that Acme Bat Man costume that Wile E. Coyote wore before crashing into the side of a cliff?

I watched this one years ago, and I don't think I've ever recovered. The last half of the film is SO monotonous.
Or even Krankor's men from Prince of Space.
Yeah. I'm watching this now, about halfway through, and wondering if it will even reach Neptune Men-level action, which is the lowest bar imaginable. So far, it's not looking good.
Honestly, I think the Stormtroopers stationed on Endor could've mopped the floor with Starman.

You know what? I actually give this movie credit for having the damsel in distress get herself out of trouble and take down a bunch of henchmen in the process. If “Prince of Space” and “Invasion of the Neptune Men” are any indication, female characters in general, let alone badass ones, are a rarity in these kinds of movies.
My happy memory with this riff is watching this when it came out on a crowded Tokyo commuter train and the guy next to me wondering why I was snickering at a children TV show. I’m sure he must thought I was high.

Then at time frame 53:07 ( for this movie) when the enemy leader says” sound the alarm “, play Sabotage from the Beastie Boys. Perfect for the enemy troops running

I'm only disappointed that, to my knowledge, they didn't finish This Island Earth in the MST3k movie. Then again, I haven't seen that movie in years, so I might be misremembering.
Man, I hope this is a riff of the whollllllllle thing. I saw the entire movie twice... as a kid, then in my 20's. The words "charming" & "goofy" barely begin to describe it.

@@EarthboundX It was a series called Super Giant in Japan, the US adaptations were the films -- Atomic Rulers of the World, Invaders from Space, and Attack from Space. The final episodes were re-edited into Evil Brain from Outer Space, if I am recalling them correctly.
I wonder how high Attack from Space ranks on the list of "longest fight scenes in movie history."
I bet it's up there.
I know I'm stating the obvious, but the japanese girl fighting off the whateveraliens with a machine gun was WAY more interesting than the fight Starman was doing.

Miss Tokyo is the perfect name to paint on your kamikaze dinghy. That way, authorities will completely ignore it, since it obviously won't Hit Tokyo.
The "Damsel in Distress" does 90% of the heavy lifting in this movie!

Really enjoyed this one. Warm, energetic, committed, it's nice to see a focused film that, while it fails, fails with all it's heart.

I do think it was kind of cool that the teenage girl was given a heavy machine gun and proceeded to get into a protracted gun battle with her captors. Japan liked its fighting females even back then.

Just like John Wayne, Starman never has to reload or aim his gun, and also sometimes kills 3 or 4 bad guys with a single bullet. He's just like The Duke, only with Playtex Living Gloves!

This was the longest and most pointless fight sequence I've EVER seen in ANY movie on Earth!!!! I love how each guy waits his turn to get his butt kicked next so patiently!!
I'm pretty sure Starman literally killed 300 Space Nazis, one at a time, and they STILL never ran out of guys!
With a fight scene that makes They Live's "Put on the Glasses" look like a "lady's picnic"!

Chumei Watanabe did the music for this one? That guy is a legend in tokusatsu music. His work during the 70's and 80's were his best and fans in Hawaii will recognize his music from the show Kikaider. He is also known by the name Michiaki Watanabe and he is still doing music with his most current work being in Zenkaiger.

This has become one of my ASMR episodes lately...this and the MST3K Hamlet
Even the jokes were far and few in between in this 3 1/2 hour masterpiece - what? One-hour-sixteen minutes? Magic!
"Makes the Pumaman look graceful and convincing. " OMG LOVED the Pumaman reference. One of my all time favs!
The starman fights feel like an extended power rangers fight scene and I'm all for it!
This is an early henshin hero tokusatsu so it only makes sense.
I think this is like the longest fight scene in cinematic history.
What's amazing about this is so many of the same costumes and characters are used throughout other similar movies that you literally feel like you're watching the same movie over and over while simultaneously feeling like you've never watched them before.
How many of these kinds of awful sentai movies did Japan make in the 1960s anyway?

I know Starman type outfits are reused a lot, though not always the exact same one. The starfish looking aliens at the beginning are very, very similar to those in Warning from Space and I am almost certain I've seen them in another movie, but I'm having trouble finding it. In fact, the entire alien council is very similar to another movie that I've seen... I'm going to have to go through my collection one of these days. They also like to use military style uniforms for aliens like they do here. It's just how they did things :D
@@cujoedaman And the pretty blatant Nazi salute the aliens did? Some kind of dig at WW2 Nazi Germany I assume?
@@Nightweaver1 That one troubles me a bit, Japanese filmmakers aren't usually the type to mock other cultures in their movies like many American or even British filmmakers do, even if they deserve it. It could be there was some message about Nazi's and their takeover of the world, which I would see as some kind of hypocritical message since they themselves attacked the US while the war raged on in Europe, one we were not a part of at the time.
I do find it interesting that the lead aliens are very American looking as well (or German?), could be something there too. They do like their alien armies to be well dressed, especially if they're a military group, they'll always have great costumes that make you say "yep, that's a military". Probably something with their culture and honor.
I did notice the salute changed a couple times too, one version after they stretched out their arm, they brought it back do their chest and then dropped it. I also noticed ones that looked more like a "hey, how you doin'?" kind of wave. It's possible they just didn't have a strict rule on how the salute should look.
I'm certainly no expert on the matter, I'm sure there's someone out there that knows a lot more. I think this boils down to just being a Japanese version of Superman, especially with his very "Clark Kent" looking disguise when he is on Earth. I mean, he is the man of steel here.
THE PERFECT MOVIE FOR WHEN YOU'RE DRUNK, STONED, OR WANT TO EAT IT ALL.
I would have respected this movie a lot more if the hero had been any one of the creatures from the opening council scene.

Our first view of the denizens of the Emerald Planet makes them look like a low budget Japanese version of Dark Crystal, as directed by someone heavily into geometric shapes. Also heavily medicated.
Christ, Starman's costume is so tight you can see whether he's been circumcised...
I love how during the entire final fight people are just tepidly shooting at Starman to no effect. Really helps to remind you of the total lack of danger he’s in.
At no point did anyone realize that they had zero chance of hurting Starman and instead try to capture the protagonists. Which could have actually been dramatic as Starman is slowed down by dozens of men in his attempt to prevent their capture. Beating up space nazis is way too entertaining to bother with that though
I always look forward to these full movies!

The movie should have been about them, it may have been interesting.
Repeating "globe-meter watch" at increasing volume is going to be my explanation for everything from now on.
Prince of Space is the Citizen Kane of this genre.

Quite frankly one of the craziest films I've ever seen.

I loved the Saphirians uniforms. I feel that they were a precursor to, and an inspiration for later Japanese sci-fi anime of the 70's and 80's...I was thinking specifically Space Battleship Yamato and Macross.
Think about the fact that the costume designer actually sketched out those emerald people costumes and thought they were a good idea. Also, did anybody else notice Kevin coughs right before the kids leave the hardware store?

I liked the Saturn looking planet in the background in the beginning just bouncing around instead of maintaining any sort of orbit.
This movie makes Prince of Space look more dignified.

"Death Star" is probably a translation error. In Japanese, planet and star use the same word, so the original was probably "Death Planet". One of the Gamera movies had the same issue.

Those aliens at the beginning.. there was a futurama episode that sort of kinda not really parodied anime, and the entire thing with communicating by dancing feels a lot like that for some reason. Might just be in a Groeningy mindset since just seeing the title made me think of Kodos singing "Peeeeeace, peace peace peeeace from spaaace"
oh and I think some of these voices were in Superbook.

That fight scene just would not end. It was just never ending. I was like, "oh my God, it's still going." It's a shame when your favorite superhero leaves mounds of corpses behind. Sad, really.
