    I think Lil Dicky’s mission isn’t just to be regarded as one of the best lyrical rappers, but as he mentions in “Professional Rapper ft. Snoop Dog” he wants to show that you don’t have to do rap just one way.
    You guys want him to address serious topics, in a non comedic way but it’ll never happen. He’s a goofball. But when you think about it, comedians are typically some of the deepest thinkers. They’re hurt artists. And their response to serious topics is mockery. So Lil D addresses serious concerns like his insecurity of being a white Jewish rapper, by mocking the fact his lawyers are ironically black. You’ve gotta peel back what he’s saying, and after listening to nearly everything he’s put out you start to get to know him more personally (which sometimes even serious story telling rappers don’t come off personal, just lyrically brilliant ya know)
    Just my two cents from a fellow Philly guy

    "Can you only get so deep in comedy?" No. You can get mad deep.
    Evidence:
    Movie Directors: Coen Brothers, Terry Gilliam, Charlie Kaufman. (oscars)
    Music: (early) Eminem, Primus, Mr. Bungle, Horse the Band, etc. Tool, a band you have reviewed, has a song called stinkfist. It is a contemplation on the human need to push for more feeling and meaning becoming numb to ones current state. Thus chasing that dragon. AND a joke about fisting.
    TV: And I shouldn't have to mention SouthPark, Futurama, and Rick and Morty.

    Based on George’s reaction to most of Lil D’s tracks, I don’t think he likes him much. He respects his ability to rhyme words, but even after the Russell Westbrook reaction, still doubts him. Dude can spit and has the potential to drop some deep lyrics. He’s choosing to be goofy in an effort to make noise in the hip hop scene.

    A lot of your viewers probably never heard of this band, but I *strongly* recommend reacting to Umphrey's McGee - Ocean Billy (Live at Red Rocks). This band has a super dedicated cult following similar to that of the Grateful Dead. Since every show is different, their fans show up for gigs over and over again, which means they fill up venues more easily than a lot of bands that sell more albums. (Where I live, they sold out a venue two nights in a row that Megadeth couldn't fill for a single night.)
    They do a little bit of everything: progressive rock, metal, funk, jazz, dance music, and even hip hop on occasion. If you do a reaction, be sure to react to a live video/performance, because that's where they really shine.

    LD no doubt is a amazing rapper and he is packing the skills to showcase it but if his intention from this song is for him to be taken seriously then I find his case hard to make a verdict. In terms of skill as a rapper I could take him seriously because I know he has the skill for it, but LD always gives off this sort of comedic aspect to me that makes me react like "haha man that line was jokes" and the thing is there are other emotions in rap I have yet seen LD explore deep into. But hey LD is a talented individual and I think he is capable of figuring out what he need to do in the game. Great video guys love the discussion topic.

      Nate Baker check out "Molly" & "Darwin" by him. Slightly more serious topics. Still the occasional joke but Molly especially hit me hard... But I don't think he wants to be taken seriously in the traditional sense of the word. I think he wants to be taken seriously as a lyricist. He just wants his talent & pen game to be recognized as one of the best, regardless of the jokes. I think there's a difference there you feel me?

      Tyler Davis Thanks for the recommendation I'll check it out, I agree with his whole talent and pen being recognized thing cuz he showcased his skillset in a whole bunch of his tracks. No doubt he's incredibly talented and I think many artist who worked with him knows he could spit but let's say IF he is talking about it in a traditional sense (what if scenario) I think his discography and rapper persona extends to this dope lyrical comedic cadence (especially his stage name gives of a comedic aspect). So y'know trying to take someone seriously (in a traditional sense) where a majority of of his listings come off funny is hard but I think LD is smart enough to handle that.

    On the topic of: "can comedy go deep", meaning as an art form. I believe it does. Comedy allows you to cut through taboo, or bring up topics that would normally make people feel uncomfortable. Open the newspaper right now and read the political section. You are almost sure to find and least one comic drawing depicting social commentary. Comedy is like Novocaine when used correctly , it helps numb the pain so the knife can cut deeper. You start off laughing, but then think about what was just said. Why do you think comedy news shows are so popular? Why was John Stewart so good at his job on the Daily Show? Why is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver able to drive his audience to crash government servers petitioning net neutrality? Comedy is more than just jokes. Dave Chappelle was pointing out glaring issues in our justice system over a decade ago when he said " Just sprinkle some crack on them", talking about police framing. When done right, comedy can be just as beautiful and inspiring as any master work in a museum.

    • @LostInVegas
      @LostInVegas  Před 6 lety +2

      Even in the examples you used, the topics that seem to have subconsciously gained your respect 'taboo topics', are topics that are still serious in nature (even if there is a comedic veil being used). That's not necessarily what we have seen from Lil D (although we have not heard his entire catalog). There is a content bias in terms of PRESTIGE that exists in society (whether we like it or not). This would all be irrelevant if Lil D didn't state that he wants to be mentioned amongst the elite's (AND PERCEIVED IN THE SAME LIGHT AS THEY ARE) when it's all said and done. To be elite, your music needs touch people, move people, inspire people on a grand scale (not just your fan base). Your music needs to have IMPACT and stand the test of time. He will need to 'mature' his content dramatically in order to make a stake to that claim imo.

    • @thewhamji
      @thewhamji Před 6 lety

      I'm not saying Lil D has that kind of music yet. I was commenting on the point you raised. I thought I heard you say, and I'm paraphraseing, "can comedy rap be taken seriously". I think it can be if done right.

    • @cgates2
      @cgates2 Před 6 lety +2

      I agree with Jeremy wholeheartedly here and, to expand off of his point, I think the very thing Lil Dicky is trying to do here is disprove what you both are saying (i.e. that to be taken seriously as an elite rapper, he has to mature-up his content). I think LD implies and outright states specifically in “Professional Rapper” that he’s trying to get the “rapping elite” to understand that you can qualify as an elite rapper and communicate to people on as (if not more) meaningfully a level with comedic rapping as you can with more traditional rapping (which i think we all can agree is typically either angry, confrontational, serious, or just straight braggadocious). He’s essentially saying you don’t have to have an impoverished, marginalized, or fucked up background to feel the things that the most well known/traditional, “elite” rappers are exuding through their lyrics. And that you shouldn’t have to have serious lyrics to be taken seriously because: 1. Comedic rapping can communicate these more heartfelt emotions and messages just as much as “serious” rapping. And 2. Because comedic rapping tends to cater more to this audience because they often feel guilty or unqualified for relating to “serious” rappers songs/lyrics given the fact that they don’t share backgrounds as oppressed as said rappers. Not to be too colorful, but he’s advancing the craft by light years in my opinion. The fact that so many elite rappers are hopping on tracks with him, to me, is only proof that they see this. I could be wrong, but it sounds to me like y’all are characterizing him as more akin to Weird Al than The Game, and that shit’s a goddamn travesty. Love the content though and agree with most of yall’s other observations in this vid.

    So. I am a metal head! Love your Megadeth/Metallica videos. But my boy played me some newer rap. And my influence in rap was old school 80's 90's gangster rap. But this dude called Atmosphere was awesome! It's like old school easy listening rap. Chill but cool. So if you could do, Atmosphere best day. Right on! Love your channel. Keep it going! Love that you guys do it all! Keep it real! Thanks

    Loved the amount of effort put into the reaction, keep doing your thing guys. But I totally disagree with you on whether or not his style is sustainable. There is NO doubt this dude's here to stay and is slowly converting the non-believers. He will continue to grow his fan base by out-rapping today's wack artists and doing the comedy thing simultaneously. He's created his own lane. How could u sleep? :)

      The point that was made wasn't regarding sustainability. Will Lil D be taken seriously as an Elite rapper (outside of his fanbase) with the content he is currently using? Will the people who are OF the culture or the purists look back on his work and mention him amongst the greats with the 'type' of content he makes?

Man I'm gonna keep it 100 with ya"all, besides mainstream shit and some old school dre, snoop, T, etc, I've never really listened to it much but the way you all broke down the meaning, structure of the song, made me reevaluate the way i listen to rap/hip hop. That's fucking awesome but I'm really digging this guy Game. Bopping my mtherfcking head. Love it guys! BTW, Parkway Drive "Crushed". Come on fellas please react to that! Thanks, free thinker out!

    I completely disagree with their take on comedy. Have they ever heard Chris Rock or Richard Pryor? These guys can talk about some serious subjects while making people laugh. The hole point of comedy is to talk about uncomfortable things.

    I just came across your channel yesterday and I'm loving the content. Thank you for your intelligent criticism. I enjoy listening to you critique both rap and metal. I just watched your Q&A #3, and I agree wholeheartedly with your opinion on mumble rap. I can't understand how it has become so popular.
    I will happily enjoy the videos you continue to put out.
    I doubt these suggestions will get you to do any reaction vids since I don't think there are any other subscribers that are suggesting these, but maybe you'll read this and it will at least get you to give them a listen during your daily lives.
    For rap I'll suggest the UK rapper Scroobious Pip. His song "Introduction" is perfect to see his style.
    And I love your video reactions to Gojira, so I'll suggest The Contortionist and their song "Absolve". They toured with Gojira last year.
    And just a fun idea, a reaction video on who did it better: Taylor Swift vs I Prevail on the song "Blank Space".
