- Sicialian guitarist Matteo Mancuso, who has been called 'the evolution of guitar' by Steve Vai and described as 'light years ahead' by Al Di Meola, gices his advice on soloing with more freedom, fluency, musicality and accuracy in this wide-ranging masterclass that's a must-watch for anyone who wants to play guitar solos that elevate the music they are a part of rather than just offer empty displays of dexterity. Covering phrasing, note selection, effective use of intervals and much more, the video also includes dazzling performances and demonstrations of key techniques by Matteo.

Lead playing should be dictated by the sound in your mind and not scale patterns… absolute gold. Thx, Matteo.
Exactly, and the key to that thing is I guess if you take a musician approach rather than the "guitarist" approach.
After decades of floundering, I recently figured this out.
Except there is no way that even he is thinking each note he played in that intro. That is impossible at that speed.
He might be thinking direction and overall goals, but he is also reacting to what his finger habits chose for him too.
@@georgechristiansen6785 Like you know what he's thinking 😂 Good luck with your own plucking.
@@tito.tarantula Like you can read?
I didn't say what he was thinking.
I said he wasn't thinking that fast...because nobody can.
Good luck with your ignorance.
Virtuoso, shredder, wizard, genius....I don't care what you want to call him and the way he plays, it's another level and I am here for it. Looking forward to watching this dude continue to push the instrument forward.
Wow not only is he such a great guitarist, he really understands music, phrasing, communication, and connection! This is a great interview.
🎸😁
This guy is finally blowing up.
This lad has really taken the instrument to the next level. What a player 🙌
I'm legitimately excited thinking about everything this guy is going go to play in future. A generational talent, hypnotic to watch, tasteful musically, and seems like a lovely down to earth go too.
Can I just say how awesome it is that he comes off as the most approachable, almost normal, looking guy! As one of the premier guitarists in the world you might imagine him dressing and acting like a big ego rock star. But rather without the guitar, he looks like a regular kid who has come over for an early Sunday pasta at my Aunt Lizzie’s! He’s just unique and refreshing in this way!
After his recent show in Sacramento he came outside and hung out with the crowd for over 30 minutes, signing albums, taking pictures, and just enjoying their enthusiasm. Great kid. I'm truly excited to see what he brings in the future.
His human qualities are maybe superior his musical qualities.
Nice edit at the end, thanks for that.
he was going to say something useful and they cut it out so stupid
I don’t listen to advice unless it comes from some who actually knows what they’re doing. I listened, thank you Matteo.
In addition to the talent, taste and skills, he also has wisdom.
He is an absolutely brilliant guitarist!
I very much agree with his phrasing advice. His musicallity is more important that technique.
Some very good advice from a fabulous player.
His point about playing nothing and space dictating is where it’s at! Phenomenal player bravo Matteo
His right hand technique is his greatest advantage. It's so unique
Unusual wisdom at such a young age. The part about speaking when you’re not sure what to say inparticular.
That dude's picking technique is revolutionary. 😱
Matteo, your technic and skills are amazing! I wonder if you also ever practice solo chord melody type songs. I would love to hear you play something familiar that a 70 yr old like me might remember. Bravo!!
The guitarist mentioned by Matteo is Birelli Lagrene, one of the greatest gypsy jazz player.
thanks, i was looking for this comment
I too. Yes Bireli for me is one of the very best Jazz players if not THE best
What a brilliant musician!
Dude knows his theory, too. Physical AND mental “chops”❗️
Absolutely fantastic advice!!!! I agree with him 1000%. On a guitar, because every "C" note looks DIFFERENT than every other "C" note (not like the piano, where they all look the same), it is a deep challenge to track Key signatures and modulations. As a result, guitarist will learn prepared "licks" (short phrases of notes) just like he said. The result is that a soloist will sound "stilted" and unnatural, and if you listen long enough, they'll repeat "licks". At that point, it's not improvisation, it's just regurgitating hunks of notes that may or may not sound good together. Also, YES: SING a solo...then learn what you just sang. Don't use these as Licks, just do it to get familiar with note flow on the fretboard. The goal is that at some point, you can just play what you wanted to sing!! And Lastly, YES; taking risks and making mistakes will produce a better solo than connecting licks. GREAT ADVICE, MATTEO!!!
Fantastic advice!!!
Nice class, I’ll master this in a few hours
Thank you!❤
He’s incredible
Legend already
Unparalleled!!
I remember Claudio Quartarone playing like this many years ago. Congratulations to Matteo for his immense talent.
Quartarone plays another genre of music, and he is not able in shredding technique. MM is much more eclectic. His right hand technique is UNIQUE IN THE WORLD.
Thank you Master
Love Matteo ❤️ and the rest of you reading this comment or watching ♥️ music is a huge part of everyone's lives and Matteo for sure feels music in a very personal and special way and to that I agree and love ❤️
Well said!
Fantastic, keep it up amigo 👋🏾
The video is cut out ... Matteo didn't finish the sentence :(
Great explaination in regards of "space". It's like talking, if you don't have anything to say in the conversation, don't speak. Just listen, what you will say after you listened will be much more meaningful because you listened. Mio fratello Matteo, veramente un grande
You are searching very good advice cheers.
I’d love to see an interview where he talks about phrasing. He can slow down and play very melodically, and I know that was a process started with his dad, but how did he approach this with his soloing as he was learning?
In my opinion, Matteo's first quality is not his virtuosity, but his intelligence.
grandissimo talento
What IS it with Italians and virtuoso guitar?
He's also a music philosopher... Amazing guy.
Playing electric lead guitar with your fingers is much more difficult to master than a pick, but it clearly gives you a huge advantage if you do master it. Very inspiring player.
Makes me think what caused him to use this technique when young, nobody told him to use pick, or he just refused? I remember when I got my first guitar at 14, I had played some bass earlier, and I plucked it like a bass. My band mates made fun of that, so I changed to pick due to peer pressure. I guess that was the wrong choice lol
@@shredd5705see his vid with Rick Beato, he explains it
But picks can so some things fingers cant
@@dressedtosmellgood Yes but finger player sounds more original, because everything that can be played with a pick has been done 10000 times, where as players like this are rare, so things he plays sound fresh because most guitarists can't do these fingerings. Although, Matteo will never be a believable metal guitarist. Not being able to palm mute is a huge downside
@@shredd5705He grew up watching his dad who was a very good classical guitarist and said he thought that was how it was supposed to be done,Glad he didn’t change….
That ended abruptly!
GM are looking for a NEW editor as we speak!
Wheres the rest?
I love how he says if you don’t have a clear idea of what you’ll play then just don’t play and the video ends
I feel ya interviewer I feel ya
Though I can appreciate this young man, the speed trap is truly addictive to some, but the beauty of slow melodic solos from the likes of David Gilmour, BBK etc truly move the soul. Speed moves the mind i.e. oh wow, thats fast. Give me five slow perfectly placed notes and my soul heals a little bit more. The old guys will get this.
It's a old argument. You can play gold or shit. Nevermind the speed. It depends by music quality, not by speed. There is iper speed shit, and iper speed good music. There is shitty slow music, and there is golden slow music.
How is this guy possible!
This guy is truly a phenomenon creating shock waves in the industry. Very much like Guthrie Govan did a couple of decades ago.
Yet to hear some really great, original music from him, but he's still young!
Lunga vita
al Re delle
dita...👍
First advice is the best advice.
Cool stuff! What is that gadget on the first fret? Anyone know?
"Simple" things are the tastiest and Matthew great skill combines a great simplicity, as if everything that sounded were us to play note after note all so simple but unattainable, unfortunately for many, but it does not matter is the beauty of the great
could you play that opening part a little faster please...kinda slow but you're getting there
I want to see him sing these insanely fast runs
It would sound like Cleo Laine on speed.
The point is to be able to hear something in your head before playing it, instead of muscle memory dictating your playing.
@@nomnom112: it's both. The goal of practice is to build up muscle-memory and the connection to the ideas in your head.
This Matteo🎸is a Jan Hammer on a Guitar 🎹🎹🎹🔐🎶🎶🆒
❤
The video is cut off! Please repost it in full
Well, that little lesson summed about up why my efforts as a guitar player never amounted to anything.
what kind of mute is he using that allows him to play open strings?
It should be not overlooked the fact that his father is a guitar player for profession ...this to say that by "chewing" guitar playing since the beginning of his life Matteo's ears have got accustomed to melodies and arpeggios etc., even if not so interested into guitar playing in his early ages ...he said that he started playing at the age of 10 going after DeepPurple, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin etc., and only later on he moved into classic music, jazz and fusion ....Be it as it may he's today the best guitar player around and only listening to his explaining his approach to guitar playing (how he moves his right hand fingers etc.,) does reveal that he is a genuine guitar virtuoso. Well done - ben fatto Matteo.
Where’s the full interview >???
It's literally on CZcams
I've never seen anything like it.
What name does he drop @ 2:05?
Can anyone help me with who the guitarist he mentions at 2:05? I’d like to listen but I can’t figure out what guitarist
My favorite guitar player of all time. One guitar player to rule them all.Peace.
Nope that's Shawn Lane Matteo is close tho
Nope that's Jimi Hendrix, like all the others also Matteo and shawn are close to 😂
Nope, it's my grandma but Jimi and Matteo are close tho.
Where is the rest of the lesson
Who was the guitarist he mentioned I can't spell what he is saying. I love gypsy jazz and he mentioned it
Bireli Lagrene
❤️🎸👋🇮🇹
Who is the improvisor who he says he loves? I can't make out the name!
small error in description gives says gices
what is that string damp?
Great stuff! Thank you! The string dampener (not sure what brand) is something Guthrie Govan uses. Maybe you can talk about that in a future interview? 🤔
He talks about it in many italian interviews. He just says he does not feel like "cheating" while using a string dampener, for it is just s tool to make playing just a little more comfortable. I must say to think this guy "cheats" you must be crazy.
Guthrie uses a Gruv Gear fret wrap. It helps mute strings. It’s easier to play certain things and not having to focus on muting.
Use a sponge. Works just the same and you dont look stupid overpaying for something you dont need.
He explained it quite well on the Rick Beato interview that just came out.
Whats the name of the guitar player he mentions at 2:00? I couldn't catch it.
Biréli Lagrène
Interesting thing about Birelli Lagrene is he doesnt know theory, cant read music, cant name chords. But he knows and understand them by ear and can gypsy jazz with the best of them and more. Indeed talks his mind on the guitar.
Few cases in music history
Why did you butcered the video in the end?
Phenomenal player and that Yamaha Revstar looks so sexy!
Whats the name of the person he says is one of his favorite improvisers? I cant quite understand to look him up properly.
Bireli Lagrene
@@valerioamici1093 thanks! I actually knew him but understood something completely different, lol. cheers
2:03 Who is this guy mentioned here ?
Don't quite understand the name
Bireli Lagrene, a master of guitar, but also great on bass and violin.
2:40
I have two words. Tory Slusher. 😊
All fourths tuning is great -- it really improves the instrument.
But you give up the ability to precisely copy guitar parts played in standard tuning.
he is streets ahead
2:04 - What is the name Matteo says here?
Bireli Lagrene
Does he have perfect pitch ?
That’s not that big of deal compared to his guitar skills I have perfect pitch and can’t just fly with musical statements and precision like that on guitar
Don't want to be a critic but as an italian, I think Matteo may express himself more clearly in his mother language, I often see him struggling while trying to explain something.
I know it wouldn't be so great to have a translator that covers his voice but I think he would have more freedom talking and his tips would be even more clear.
Yes, I can imagine this is so. And also, this is yet another reason he is astonishing. Even speaking in a second language, he is more articulate and intelligent than most native English speakers.
2:05 who?
Guthrie's reign came to an end...Welcome Matteo
I think he has some genes from Paganini.
If we take his advice, "if you're not sure what to play, don't play", most of us wouldn't play at all. 😢
But you rely mostly on arranged flows. You don't seem to take much risks.
fretboard "wuiseling"......... :-(( where is the feeling of notes with heart??
I think, "Just don't play if you don't have a definite idea", is a terrible idea. Or, "If you are not 100% sure of what you will play, just don't play." is insane advice. He's doing his best to tell you something profound. Many song writers and musicians stumble onto great phrases while piddling. My advice would be just the opposite. "Just pick it up and start playing"; "Playing is like a box of "chocklits", you never know what you're gonna get." Many of my arrangements show up when I'm just playing randomly, and I'll be like. "Yes! take it in that direction." Don't always be telling the guitar what to do. Sometimes it will show YOU a song. This is not an opinion unique to me.
Dave Gilmour a classic example of this. He said that glorious four note (Bb, F, G, E) phrase from Shine on you Crazy Diamond simply fell out of his guitar during practice. No forward thinking, it just happened. And what a beautiful phrase to accidentally stumble across!
But why Orange? 😝
Stuff like this really attracts young Boys for some reason
Attracts me and I'm 44
You look like Marty McFly 😂
practice what you preach right, meaning just don't overplay 😂
Technically able for sure. Zero emotional connection for me. Speed and technique, when I think of the great players, modern guys like this just can’t reach the heart.
The intro is obviously meant to be a display of skill, because he is relatively new to many people. Not a beautiful melody that touches your soul
Initially it’s impressive for technic…but at the end I also didn’t feel emotions…Satriani, just to say a name, play often few tunes, but he can reach hearts with them…I hope it’s just because Matteo is young and he needs time to mature.
Didn't teach much......mostly just played.....
this is in no way a “masterclass”
He has amazing technique but a master would never use it like this.....give him time though.
What?
Wut?
Funny comment 🤣
How do you know how a master would use it ?
@@eagleeggs3862 Well I'll make this as simple as possible for you.Music is not a race or a competition and if it were the fastest/cleanest technique on any instrument would never be the master. It's juvenile to be awe struck at this one logistic aspect of art.Obviously you've neglected the art of music altogether so I won't go into details that would fly over your head eagle.
