    I'm fascinated by the cammo uniforms these troops wore in 1944 - like the ones we see here at 0.22 - something so innovative for that time and today popularized in all Armies of the world. Those guys looked imposing and menacing in them carrying across the chest those belts of machine gun bullets.

      They were far from the first. The Italians were using some multi-coloured cammo in Libya in the 1930s. The German Army also developed it in the 1930s but, because they were having to outfit millions of men at short notice, stuck with simpler field grey.

Could make a strong argument that they performed their best in 1944 in France. Having 0 air cover, they were able keep the door open for the retreating troops in the Falaise Gap. SPOT ON; ACTUAL INCIDENT - PATTON VISITED A GERMAN POW CAMP THAT HOUSED ALL EX WAFFEN SS SOLDIERS. HE WAS ASTOUNDED TO SEE THAT THEY MAINTAINED DISCIPLINE, RESPECT FOR RANK AND AUTHORITY, AND WORKING OUT TO MAINTAIN PEAK PHYSICAL FITNESS. THE AMERICAN COMMANDING OFFICER OF THE CAMP, WHO HAPPENED TO BE JEWISH, COMPLAINED TO PATTON THAT THEY ARE STILL USING THE HEIL HITLER SALUTE EVEN THOUGH HE GIVES THEM HARD LABOR AS PUNISHMENT. PATTON REPLIED, "I SEE NOTHING WRONG HERE CAPTAIN, MY GOD LOOK AT THE DISCIPLINE OF THESE MEN, THEY ACT AS IF THEY HAVE NOT LOST. I WISH OUR TROOPS HAD 1/10 OF WHAT THESE SOLDIERS HAVE. WE SHOULD RE-ARM THEM AND TAKE ON THE RUSISANS." THE CAPTAIN REPORTED WHAT PATTON SAID AND IT WENT ALL THE WAY UP THE CHAIN OF COMMAND. PATTON WAS RELIEVED OF DUTY BECAUSE OF HIS FAILURE TO DE-NAZIFY. HE HAD GREAT RESPECT FOR THEIR MAGNIFICENT ENDURANCE AND FIGHTING ABILITY.

    After they were pulled from the line in Feb 1942, they had lost what 60% of their combat strength in the battles of 1941 and crucially in the drive for Moscow. Still some veterans in the mix, but they were again decimated at Kursk and by 1944 as they were forced to abandon Frances railroads for roads to make it to Normandy, they were a shadow of the division that started the Russian campaign on June 22nd, 1941.
    But that original division, full strength, as they were when Barbarossa began, didn’t have Tigers or panthers yet, but they were elite, ruined many a Russians day and encircled entire armies multiple times during that original campaign. I believe a recon element of the division got further than any other German troops in the assault on Moscow, as it was rumored that from a height these soldiers could make out the Kremlin and other landmarks in the Russian capital. This remains the closest any German soldier got to Moscow during that campaign(and they got to within 15 miles of the Kremlin). Das Reich was literally the tip of the spear, and they almost got there….

    • @jandoernte3312
      @jandoernte3312 Před rokem +6

      They were not "decimated" at Kursk. That grand theory has been debunked a alot of russki propaganda. They continued to fight right after Kursk.

    • @frederickphelaniii3733
      @frederickphelaniii3733 Před rokem +3

      @@jandoernte3312 by that point in the war they were Done, as evidenced by the fact that they remained on the retreat across the entire eastern front for the remainder of the war. After Kursk, all the Germans did was Retreat, get surrounded/routed, Retreat and Retreat. They NEVER again took the offensive after Kursk…
      When looking at the numbers, the Soviets suffered way more. 177k casualties, 1130 aircraft, and 1900 tanks/armored vehicles destroyed. By contrast, German casualties were way lower: 194 aircraft, 280 tanks, 56k casualties. But that number included virtually all the tiger and panther tanks the Germans had at the time. They of course delayed their offensive so that these new tanks could play a role. Many had mechanical issues and breakdowns associated with new technology, and they didn’t affect the ultimate outcome of the battle.
      The big difference between the German and the Soviet armies of 1943 was that the Soviet military was continuing to grow(to a figure of 5,000,000 fighting men) as the Germans(below 2,000,000 troops and falling fast) every day lost thousands of IRREPLACEABLE troops and equipment. Everything Russia lost at Kursk, especially their aircraft and armored vehicles, were easily replaced by the Soviet military juggernaut. When the Germans lost elite officers, when their best divisions were shattered, there were no equal replacements waiting in the rear to take their place. This was the big difference. Many of the men who were instrumental to the German successes in 1941 and 1942 were dead, injured, or replaced(like Heinz Guderian, their very best) by the time Kursk happened…
      Germany lost some of its best offensive troops during the battle of Kursk. Das Reich was shattered, and was moved back to France afterward to refit and receive replacements. When they were again in action in 1944 in France, they made no difference as the Germans were decimated again at the Falaise gap and forced to retreat…for Das Reich Kursk was their last big battle, the last time they were on the offensive. These are Facts, not opinions.

The content is pretty interesting, done in a good chronological order, and neither glorified or demonized the division. It was more or less a statement of facts (as I understand the history of their actions at least) and it was interesting. I'm sure it happened to many divisions over the war, but I can't fathom how being transported from France to Russia and back multple times after being mauled in battle and losing a bunch of men/equipment wouldn't have been completely soul crushing. Especially knowing that at any point your train or transport etc could have been ambushed by partisans or plane attack etc... I hope like hell we never have conflict again like this in our lifetimes (or my kids) but I have to hand it to the soldiers of all nations from back then. Just finished the 5 volume set for the Das Reich Divisional History! It states that by the Spring of 1944 there could be no more talk about an elite division as conscripts now made up most of the frontline fighting force. Its forces were shot to pieces before engaging Allied units during D-day. The Arden offensive was a logistical nightmare and allied Air supremacy, and overwhelming artillery power broke up their attacks. Then finally during the last months of the War they did everything possible to stall the Russians but lacked any staying power. The one anecdote that stood with me was: During the winter battles of 1941/42 a Kamerad has his hands blown off from a Russian attack. His mates are calling out for him to keep moving forward toward their slit trench, but he falls backwards into a Soviet one; where he is then diced to pieces. Enraged the soldiers attack for revenge taking a couple of more casualties in the process for sake of a fellow volunteer.

Later the leader of the Das Reich learned this, it was his friend and comrade from the East that had been one of the men killed.

    IMO the SS and LW ground forces were a huge drain on the Heer/ Army. These forces got the lions share of the best equipment and supplies which really didn’t help the Wehrmacht win the war. Their training was inadequate and it showed in the disproportionate casualties they suffered. Less time playing soccer and more time in the field … The LW ground forces also were an embarrassment, just think if the Heer had all that equipment and manpower thrown away. Luckily for us their were to many power struggles in Germany

    Actually it's been proven the Germans won Kursk. They lost fewer tanks and men and also returned damaged armour to the field faster than the Soviets.
    Problem was they couldn't press on as Hitler ordered their retreat as the Anglo Zionists had just invaded Italy.

      @@revolution1423 I don't need links. It is a well known fact that what happened in Ouradour was a reprisal action against partisans activities in the area, even if Oradour-sur-Glane had nothing to do with it. The French resistance had been told to delay the advance of the German divisions to Normandy. If they hadn't, the Nazis would have probably been able to push back the Allies into the sea.
      I find it very far fetched to shift the responsability of this massacre to the French resistance. You forget who really did it.

      @@phlm9038 The French resistance were not legal combatants. They aren't recognized by the Geneva convention. They store munitions at the top of the church which detonated killing the people below. That's why the bodies were blown to bits. Madame Rufranche changed her story three times and basically won the case for the Das Reich division.
