In the late 1960s I met a very nice German family who had immigrated to the US after the war. I remember talking with the father who was a soldier in the German army under Hitler. Being fascinated by WW II, I had to ask him if he had ever seen Hitler in person and his response was, "I was at one time nearly as close to him as I am to you right now". When I asked him his opinion of Hitler, he simply stated, "He vas a fuckink nut!"

Germany lost the war not because of tactical, operational, logistical or even strategic difficulties, short-comings, mistakes or blunders. It didn’t even lose the war at a certain time point or year between 1939-45.. It had already lost a future (inevitable) war once it had allowed Hitler and the Nazi Party full control over its domestic/internal government and affairs. A flawed ideology demanded a future, decisive war in ‘the East’. This was already written unequivocally in Hitler’s manifesto….which is what Mein Kampf essentially is. Lebensraum was to be found in the East. Subjugated and enslaved Slavic ‘subhumans’ were to be found for the service of the Herrenvolk in the East. The annihilation of the Judeo-Bolsheviks was to be in the East. “The East” meant only one thing….and everyone knew…it meant the Soviet Union. Ideologically, this war had always been an imperative. It then became an economic imperative due to Hitler’s/Nazi’s management and spending. Finally by 1940, having boxed himself and Germany into a terrible situation (and with the British Empire not playing by his intended script), Hitler then finds himself facing a military imperative to attack the Soviet Union preemptively lest the Soviet Union do the same….but at a later date from a position of increased strength! In summary, the war was lost at a political and ideological level decades before these Generals had their military tasks. That so few of the potentially powerful men failed to stand up against this regime but instead either cowered as sycophants or simply acted for the betterment of their own careers, is a tragedy that cost the lives of millions, on all sides. It may be understandable, it may be forgive-able, for who are we to say we would really have done differently? But, it is also true. They often claim, as their excuse, that they were merely soldiers carrying out their jobs to the best of their abilities. And, that they were “apolitical”. YES! This may be true……and THAT is exactly why Germany lost the war!

Bad training, bad tactics, bad planning, purges, bad morale, mid grade equipment and terrible leadership at the general and political level. Much as Putin is willing to throw away hundreds of thousands of Russian lives on a failed invasion of Ukraine just to save face, Stalin was willing to lose about 20% of his population over 5 years instead of hiring competent generals that didn't see their soldiers and civilians as numbers on paper to be used and expended. Russian military and political leadership from late Imperial Russia to the Soviet Union to modern Russia has always been terrible for the most part. That is why they suffered from the Russo-Japanese War, WW1, WW2, Afghanistan, Chechnya and now Ukraine. ALWAYS high losses for what is supposed to be a premier world power and always excuses or apologist for why they get curb-stomped in every fight, even the ones they eventually win. Maybe Russia should just quit at the whole war business, they are and have been bad at it for well over a century now. Their last claims to being an actual effective power date to the mid 1800's.

I used to work with some former German PWO. Amazing, I can't even post words of some of them because you wouldn't believe me. One recalled that all prison wards were women because all Soviet men were at the front. That German was telling me with laughter that he even had sex with some of the Russian wards. Those three PWO spoke good Russian, they were engineers, understood Russian humor, it was easy and interesting to work with them. It was a huge industrial project of German company in the USSR, I learned a lot from them. On one occasion on very cold winter night our small bus got stuck in the middle of nowhere just 150 km from Moscow. Suddenly one of German PWO told in German to his fellow Germans that that was the place where he had fought his last battle before he had been wounded and taken prisoner. He was in his mid-fifties but in a great shape: tall, handsome, well groomed, well dressed. All these times one of our engineers was silent and gloomy. I knew that Russian guy very well, he was a decorated veteran of war: he looked like a seventy-year-old man, shabbily dressed, missing teeth and bad dentistry made of stainless steel, his unshaven face all in wrinkles of an earthy color. He smoked nonstop. I translated few phrases of German conversation for that Russian. He pulled up his trousers and showed prostatic leg and said, "I lost my leg here". I felt sick in my stomach. It turned out the German and the Russian were of the same age though the Russian looked horribly old and worn out. The Russian won the war - the German lost. These is one of the stories that hunts me often.
