The reason why you don't see villains in some recent openings is because they don't look like monsters, they look like humans, and some of them are actually humans,

@@arcynixz yes and no. the official documents released to the pubblic shows that, while unified collectables always sells, secondary belts has consistently sold less than the main one from ghost onward, weapons have been inconsistent, and extra DX stuff really has not sold well (while gadget and figures worked diretly with the season notoriety)
hell, 01 used a trick, so that there are 2 weapons/belt (with film recolor for each), 2 mook belts, one evil team belt (with glorious film recolor), one big bad double-belt, one belt using an additional integrated piece of plastic, and 5 cheat belt, which are just the original toy with different faceplates on, and most of the return was from the collectables and the toy figures

Fun Fact: The Creator of Kamen Rider Shotaro Ishinomori is the same guy who created the Super Sentai, which later be adopted to America as the Power Ranger. Another thing is that Super Sentai was supposed to be just another Kamen Rider installment because the Kamen Riders keeps having crossover and team ups with the previous Kamen Rider, that's why Shotaro Ishinomori planned the next Kamen Rider installment would be a group of multi-color Riders with the Red one as the leader, but he fell in love with the idea that's why he just decided to make it its own separate thing.
less fun fact: Shotaro Ishinomori died while working on Kamen Rider's revival and never got to see it return
Interesting I never knew kamen rider was what started super sentai but it makes sense now that makes one scene in Zio’s movie cooler with the multi colored riders and here I thought they where just referencing sentai for all the crossovers

1:01:11 Funny you should mention violence, this was made in collaboration with Amazon JP, to garner to a more mature audience. And with that fact you could guess that this kicked up the bodily violence of the Showa era to 11, and that’s saying something considering Showa Amazon’s graphic fighting.

Everything in this comment is correct. Though I may not watch as much Kamen Rider as I used to (my last fully watched Rider was Saber), I still keep tabs on the history. Honestly, I am more than willing to go back and catch up on the Reiwa Riders and possibly some Heisei Phase 1 Riders since I have watched the majority of Phase 2 (never finished Ghost as I lost sight of its story near its third arc). A note to add is that Kamen Rider first appealed to the teenage audience due to it being classed as a drama genre. Towards the middle of Heisei Phase 1 was when it started shifting focus to a younger audience but kept some mature drama elements such as deaths.

Kuuga started in 2000, and has been airing annually since. You can definitely tell when the suits started getting flashier. I was awaiting your reaction to this after your sentai reaction, and im glad to see such genuine positivity and joy.

i watched Kamen Rider from Hibiki all the way to Build, its amazing
The reason there are less bike scenes is because Japan implemented some kind of law about customized bikes on roads so bike scenes are fewer and further between
Beyond the customized bike rules they made it harder to get permits for road filming

The cultural influence of Kamen Rider can be seen in various aspects of Japanese pop culture
Okay, I can’t help but geek out and tell newcomers:
Rider 1: Surrogate Patriarch of the entire group, highlights of his career include: Destroying Neo-Nazis, surviving an atomic bomb, teaming up with Ultraman in the 90s, fighting an army of vampires in New York City and just being a badass grandpa figure.
Rider 2: slightly stronger than his buddy and someone who everyone wants as an older brother because of his personality. Highlights include saving Christmas from a Nazi werewolf plague, having a super punch that can kill enemies in a single blow and decimating an evil military force and tossing one of their tanks because they tried to use children as human suicide bombs.
V3: A hero who is literally full of surprises, 26 of them to be exact. Examples include a drone to track bad guys or create a shield, a freeze ray in his antenna and a risky move that unleashes all his power at once in a powerful burst that creates a huge tornado but leaves him vulnerable afterwards.
Riderman: A scientist with a costume and a cybernetic gadget arm that has everything from nets to a claw blade. Not canon, but fans suspect he tinkers in his lab often based on all the crazy gizmos that his arm can be equipped with.
X: The Aquaman of the Legendary 7 more or less, enhanced armor for deep sea combat and an onboard weapon in his belt that is multi purpose (sword, staff, long pole). Infamous for fighting a Hitler Starfish monster.
Amazon: My Boy! A feral killer of evil who rips and tears enemies apart with tooth and claw. Sadly the shortest show because parents complained about the blood and dismemberment.
Stronger: The last of the Legendary 7, had a female sidekick, powers are electrical and magnetic. Can do amazing things like summon bolts of lightning from the sky or create high energy magnetic shields.
Skyrider: In the wake of the ‘79 Superman film, Ishinomori decided that Kamen Rider was going to fly too. Failed attempt at a reboot. Hiroshi gained a permanent upgrade and knows 99 combat techniques, only 1/3 of which were shown through various media.
Super-1: A Rider developed by NASA, a Kung-Fu Astro Cyborg with special gloves called 5 hands that each have a special power. Only series to have a bike from Harley-Davidson. The star who played him is a scumbag that stole money from people about a decade ago, nobody has seen him since.
ZX: The 10th Rider is an underrated gem of a hero, he is a high tech ninja with a taser ninja chain, shurikens, bombs, a hologram projector on his belt to distract enemies Shadow Clone style or disguise himself and expanded canon gives him an electromagnet enhanced katana and jet boots! Made in 1984, didn’t get his own show, but further adventures occurred in radio dramas and manga.
Black and Black RX: the pinnacle of Showa, made during the era when Japan was flush in cash economically from 87 to 89. Protagonist goes from a back to basics hand to hand combatant to a nature powered warrior with a beam saber, gun and lightsaber. RX is the only Showa series to feature a car.
The ‘90s boys: Shin, ZO and J are movies, Rider was off the air and struggling a bit to remain relevant in a post-boom Japan.
Shin is The Incredible Hulk (sort of), man who becomes a murderous Grasshopper mutant. ZO is a ‘90s take on Rider 1. J is the Giant Man of the trio, a walking Spirit Bomb that can use the energy of everything that lives or has ever lived to destroy evil with a meteor sized kick!
Part 2:
Kuuga: A new hero, a new millennium. A cool guy who protects smiles and can change forms based on if he is holding something specific or enhanced by electricity. One of the few Riders to master the art of Bike-Fu with his motocross bike. Once did a Nuclear blast level Rider Kick, fortunately nobody but the monster was harmed.
Agito: I got so powerful, I Rider Kicked the Devil!
Bike turns into a hoverboard and constantly evolves until he can potentially kill gods.
Ryuki: Highlander with Superheroes, first series with a modular belt. Ash Ketchum’s Japanese VA sings the theme song, first of the “Card Riders” gimmick.
Faiz: Darkest series given it delves into depressing topics. Gadget based hero who is also a monster (a wolf man). Main hero has a cool final form with a huge gun, plasma blade and a jet pack!
Blade: Poker Bugs and a Spider play the deadliest game of 52 pick up. Inspired by Yu-Gi-Oh’s card craze, Blade can fuse monster powers together up to create attacks or gain power ups.
Hibiki: A series that dared to be different, combining music with Japanese folklore. Main hero was a superhero Mr. Miyagi who helped a young boy navigate through life in a mentor role. Got screwed over by the network because they hated the concept (poor toy sales didn’t help) and didn’t want a show filmed outside all the time due to budget. Fans divided over it, some hate the first half and others hate the second half and some reject it entirely.
Kabuto: 35th Anniversary. Show went back to bugs as a theme. Matrix slow-mo used because it was the style at the time. Main character is a zen chill dude who can move at the speed of light when powered up and time travel with power up.
Den-O: Time train hero who uses different monsters to possess him and gain different abilities and weapons. Most commercially successful entry in the franchise, with the characters constantly returning in crossovers and anniversary events. Senketsu VA from Kill la Kill voices main monster helper.
Kiva: A stylish pumpkin head hero themed after some of the classic Universal Monsters, Dracula, the Wolfman, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and Frankenstein’s monster. Can later on turn into a vampire bat dragon…lemme repeat that, A VAMPIRE..BAT..DRAGON.
Decade: The 10th Heisei Rider, the destroyer of worlds, a multiversal traveler who can copy the powers of ALL Kamen Riders. First to cross over with its sister series Super Sentai in a one hour two part special. Crisis on Infinite Rider Earths.
I want Kamen Rider to become as popular as Marvel/DC and Anime. There’s so much that this franchise has to offer.
Funny thing is, it already is, just only in Japan, Same way West is huge on naruto but japan is all One Piece, i do agree tho KR needs more western love
i guess the way to introduce tokusatsu in western countries especially america is through the community. for example in so-called japenese events the toku community has to paarticippate in the events by cosplaying or even making games etc

I think the reason why you don't see anymore monsters in the openings is because the monsters have become less of the main focus of Kamen Rider shows as a whole. Kamen Rider started taking a great departure from its predecessor in Kamen Rider Ryuki, where Kamen Rider themselves started to kill each other. That's why, if you pay attention, you see Kamen Riders clashing their swords at each other. So, the threat doesn't only come from the villains, it also comes from the riders as well. Just because they have powers, doesn't mean they're good or bad. Gray morality is what makes Kamen Rider stands out from super sentai. Take Kamen Rider Ryuki for example, Ryuki features 13 Kamen Riders with different personalities and goals killing each other in a battle royale in order to make their wishes come true. There are the heroic type characters, the neutral characters who only want to fulfill their own dreams, psychos with warped views of reality and even straight up sociopaths who join the battle only for the fun of it. So, the challenge for the protagonist of the Kamen Rider series is more to stand up for what they believe is right than to save the day from bad guys.
Edit: The music video styled openings are mainly just for show. Don't let em fool you.

From "Rider Kick" to "Rider Punch," the character's skills in Kamen Rider are as memorable as their names🏍️
Each Kamen Rider character's name reflects their distinct skills and role within the series🔥
For me it's Kamen Rider Kuuga: Harnesses the power of ancient artifacts known as Arcle and Amadam to assume different forms and possess superhuman abilities🎑

Talking about those, only Kamen rider kabuto i can think of. Cause the riders literally pronounced them before finishing blow, just like in Showa series. It become a prominent aspect of the series and make the finishing's impact heavier
I love how Kamen Rider Joker continued the tradition with his Rider Punch and Rider Kick specials.
Those guys jamming/singing the Den-O opening weren’t villains, they’re Imagin aligned with good.
And also gives them the ability to change modes this series was one of my favorites next to Kabuto and kiva
Some corrections;
11:20 no, all the KRs since the first one to Stronger are not the same person, each Rider is a different person but they're all canonically within the same universe, at least with the Showa era Riders (except for Black and Black RX).
42:40 those colorful guys are not the villains, they're the 'spirit-esque' creatures that can possess the main character, and have different personalities, and having different fighting styles when transformed into KR Den-O, the second Rider also has one.
Also, would love to see you guys cover the Ultraman openings and some Metal Heroes stuff as well.
I'm happy for some corrections
the diff between sentai and kamen rider is that sentai tends to work together. Kamen riders tend to fight each other if their goals do not intersect. especially kamen rider ryuki and geats where the season is a battle royale and there is only one winner.
Heroism in Kamen rider is a very central theme, even in the later seasons! And they do a good job exploring the idea of heroism
41:58 my favorite part about this one is that it’s actually sung by the actors of those monster-looking guys! They actually sing several songs for the show itself.
43:20 the main actor for this show formed a band called Tetra Fang to make every single vocal song in the show, and later released an album of songs centered around the show and its characters!

So they had already tried to bring an Americanized Kamen Rider back to America. They adapted Kamen Rider Ryuki as Kamen Rider Dragon Knight back in 2009. It won a Daytime Emmy for stunts, but was cancelled after one season. I think this is one of those situations where we just need to release the original with subs and dubs.

Kamen Rider has definitely gotten flashier and more marketable towards kids over the years, but the quality of the stories has for the most part improved a lot. The openings don’t do a very good job at showing off their respective series a lot of the time, but the stories are definitely still quite serious and have stakes as it’s not uncommon for even main characters to die despite it being a kids show. I would definitely recommend giving it a shot if you’re looking for something darker as super sentai is made more for the younger demographic while Kamen rider targets older kids and teens more, so they get away with a lot more. It’s nice to see some appreciation for the older stuff and what they could pull off before digital effects as well!

Not really nonstop, they take 2 weeks off every year(1 for the final round of the US Open, the other for the All-Japan athletics championships)
Some Kamen riders do actually have mecha or giant robots like in Sentai/PR. Examples include Breaking Mammoth, Time Mazines, Suika arms, and King Excalibur. Its just that they don't use them as often in fights.
I love how much you look to appreciate each thing, and can find enjoyment in one of my favorite franchises, its so refreshing and feels really good, love the content!

Koichi Sakamoto, the guy who did the stunt choreography and later a producer during the Disney Era of Power Rangers, went on to do stunt work for seasons like W and Geats, and even a producer on Fourze
What Revice and Geats had were not mechs, those were their own transformations, an alternate form, if you will. The only ones to have mechas were Gaim and Zi-O, and even then, in the first it was more like an Exosuit, and in the latter they were rarely used outside of time travel.

Ever since my friends introduced me to Kamen Rider several years ago I can't get enough of it. Kamen Rider W was my first series I watched and still holds up as my favorite, including it's awesome opening theme.
W is Overrated + Kiva , Wizard and Build Deserves More Respect.

Fun fact, the opening which is the ending credit were MOVIE format, not the TV series and It is the goresome ones, with the Shin Kamen Rider is the more Realistic ways of how the Kamen Rider is. ZO is the gruesome like how the monster design was really scary, J in other hand can Grow into Giant like Ultraman. Amazons is essentialy a Reboot of Amazon with more adult tones here and there. And yes, Super-1 using Harley Davidson motorcycle for his 1st bike 😂 while the Harley look alike were from Honda iirc. A big thing that captivates me is that every series has a different definition of what is justice and that every rider fights for their own different ideals. It shows that anyone can be a Kamen Rider good or evil.

As a kid, I watched Kamen Rider Blade and Hibiki televised in our country (Philippines) at that time. Then, I started to become really a fan bcos of Decade.. like he introduces all Kamen riders before him and connected each Rider stories that give birth to large scale crossovers. He also appeared in several specials & movies until 2020. Now, I love everyone from 1chigo to Revice. I'm happy, inspired and proud of this Hero franchise. ✨

Thing about tokusatsu in general these days, is that's not much about good vs evil, but separate stories with their respective protagonists and antagonists, which is something I personally appreciate.

In both anime and tokusatsu shows, you will notice the closer you get to the end of the show, the more SFX they add to their opening intros. There's been cases where they'd have voices with or without lines (just exclamations/groans/grunts/giggles from characters sometimes).

Loved your reaction, just want to say: each rider shown in these openings are seperate from eachother, except KR Black and Black RX. All the Showa Riders (the first era that ended when Kuuga came out) worked together and were a part of each-other’s stories though

The rider who used card is first was ryuki the mirror rider with dragon motives, and second was blade with truf and bugs motive and last decade this was anniversary for rider and use barcode motive he can use another rider power

30:20 Shout Factory has started releasing Kamen Rider series on Blu-ray. So far they have only done two riders from Heisei era Kamen Rider Kuuga and Kamen Rider Ryuki and they have done the first Reiwa rider Kamen Rider Zero-One.
The first opening is my ringtone. The blues "singing" dog from Animal Crossing K.K. Slider actually has a version of the song called "Go K.K. Rider"
I'd also request you guys looking at the henshin (transformations) and finishers. Cause Kamen Rider's changes/morphs and attacks are so fucking dope. And also, making sure you're checking out whatever is the most current one, cause sometimes people post about ones that have been outdated due to current seasons and such, but its understandable as its very hard to find current stuff about KR, since the parent company, Toei, is very stingy about allowing anything outside of asia see it. :P
Also, the eras for KR are Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa. The "Neo-Heisei" is more just a fan thing, to separate from the first 10 heisei seasons from the others. But they're all Heisei, whilst Zero-One to present is "Reiwa". Just wanted to inform about that misinformation.
Please dont say Morph in any Kamen rider Material. A lot of Toku-tuber make that mistake too.

Kamen Riser has been a part of my childhood and unlike Super Sentai, Kamen Rider are a lot darker in terms of story and some of them, especially during Heisei Era has a lot of good villains to add with it. Series I’ll recommend to someone starting with Kamen Tider would definitely be Ryuuki, Blade, Den-O and W. Gaim is good as well as it is written by the master himself, Gen Urobuchi who is known to write a lot of good and dark stories and anime such as Madoka Magica, Fate Zero and other more. Anyone can watch anything from Heisei Era to Reiwa Era as they are not connected with each other so there’s no right or wrong watch order unlike the earlier Kamen Riders which are connected with one another.
I HATE INOUE SO MUCH BUT HE WRITES SOME OF SHIT like Faiz episode 30-50 bad , Ruined Hibiki , Rider Time Ryuki , Decade vs Zi-o and The Novels? all garbage.

I think you guys would seriously get a kick out of watching Kamen Rider Geats Episode one. So far, it’s been one of the best premiers to these seasons. As long as you can hold onto your suspension of disbelief, these shows become much better.

God damn, I said it in when you did the Sentai openings but this is just love & appreciation for what's come before and what's happening now. Massive appreciation as always.
To clear some stuff up though, you say the villains aren't in the openings but that's exactly what you saw. Kamen Riders as a concept aren't heroic, it's the user behind them. So you saw all those Riders and some of them may have seemed a little bit grander or the humans seemed a little more like they had a smirk? They could very well be villains! I get that you've come from a context that when you see things like Power Rangers or Super Sentai, you see anyone in a suit as the good guy but nooooo, anyone is a potential villain and anyone in a monster suit is a potential hero.
Remember the earlier days of Power Rangers, where you had the evil Rangers Lord Zedd made, how Tommy was evil, In Space had Psycho Rangers, all that fun stuff we still remember for being epic? Rider was like "Hold up, let's just make that our whole concept".
Like the original first Rider you saw, he used to be a brainwashed Nazi before getting out of the control and using the powers for good. He still had like, four other Riders who looked just like him in the Nazi control while he was beating up bad guys. In fact, most seasons - if not near all of them - the powers in some way come from the bad guys. The original Kamen Rider used Nazi technology to become the Rider. That one you saw of the pink guy surrounded by all the other Riders, his title is "Destroyer of Worlds". The guy you saw that became Saban's Masked Rider? His powers were forced upon him and his brother, the brother still being under the control.
So yeah, you saw plenty of villains, just that any potential big bad could be using morphers too.
P.S. That time you saw all the 'villains' doing the concert was the heroes of the story, they help the main character by giving him their unique powers. So just goes to prove that you really need that context.
I really do appreciate that you acknowledge that like Doctor Who and James Bond, there's stuff like Kamen Rider, Godzilla, and Super Sentai from Japan that's been going on for a long time (Godzilla's nearly 70 years old next year) and how impressive it is and how much they celebrate it.
I do also think Tokustasu like Kamen Rider does a FANTASTIC job celebrating the history of its franchise. It never forgets the people that helped bring the franchise where it is now and especially loves the fans its made from day one or the present day. It just gives you a warm fuzzy feeling that so many people celebrate such icons of justice and how unashamed they are about it.
