  • In the late '90s, producer Gordon Raphael heard a young band playing in a New York City venue. He approached them to offer the services of his studio, and unknowingly set off a chain reaction that would take him to the top of the music world. This is (just a little bit of) his story.

@Cody I'll have to listen again then. Maybe I was in a shitty mood or something, and I've never revisited. I shall now.
Maybe it was just because "is this it", was so outstanding. Difficult second album syndrome, they couldn't outdo it, so even if it was as good, perhaps I was disappointed?
      I'm looking for it now.

A parallel can be easily drawn between the first 2 albums of both Oasis and the Strokes. They both wanted the third album to be the next masterpiece, which would allow them to make other markets, too fast. That is in part why they unfairly dismissed Raphael during the First Impressions sessions. They had departed from their roots significantly. They wanted to be a bigger thing while being unaware that they were actually the greatest thing already.

Eduardo C, Defo Mate! As Noel said He's Saving All Around The World for the 3rd Album! Coz he can get a Bigger Orchestra etc! You Know Man! I don't know much about The Strokes But! But I know that the Bands 1st 2 Album are There Best and So Fresh/New/Raw/RnR/Exciting etc! Cheers Man

My cousin was a promoter straight out after uni and she helped with the first UK Strokes tour. She said that she'd never seen a buzz like it - they were having to cancel smaller hundred seat venues and go straight for bigger town hall venues. She also managed to lose Julian in Manchester, which was a strange one.

This is GREAT content, James. I'm so glad to see you branching out into some American areas as your detailed approach is second to none and deserves more exposure. The Doors / Nirvana material would be great!
Would also LOVE to see some of your now trademark deep delves into British hard rock / metal like Black Sabbath / Motorhead / Deep Purple etc.
Maybe you could do a 'Classic Album Deep Dive' every month and really go deep into classic rock records British and American?
You're clearly a really knowledgeable musician and content making so hope you continue branching out and getting more and more exposure!

Concerning the Strokes, I never got them. I tried really hard to like them, there was so much hype around them but I just couldn't get into them, they did nothing for me. They just came across as a bunch of rich boy posers with a bunch of o.k but not great songs. I thought there were a number of much better bands around at the same time or just after who I liked a whole lot more.
