hey guys how are you today, I've slowly starting to realize while posting on my Instagram that I've never taught you guys how to actually carve anything. this video is meant to show you how to carve into your pottery with the base understanding that most shapes are either a circle, a line, or a combination of the two.
in this way we can start to understand that the ability to make an image is just a combination of those things.
the next dirty Potter challenge will be coming out on Monday and you will most likely need the skill set in order to program.

Thanks for this video... maybe it is an idea of making sequels... like ‘the throwing’ of a particular cup, ‘the trimming’ of that same cup, ‘the carving’ of that cup, ‘the glazing of that cup, ‘the firing and open kiln’ of that cup... and maybe do 3 different styles per video.... just something crossing my mind watching this...
I'm the carver type potter 😉 great video, clear explanations and love the fact that you used basic tools and didn't give the impression we need to buy the expensive one to carve. When I started carving, I just used the basic double ended loop tool (gives two different looks) and added the Kemper tool - that's it - yes I "bought" into the motion that the expensive one would be life changing - it wasn't and still use my basic two tools plus one other cheap tool. Thank you for your great videos.
I love it the patterns are gorgeously done glad you covered this and hope you do more😍🙏
Yay! Great video! I have yet to carve..... getting my confidence up with these simple shapes though! Thank you!!
Fantastic video! I like how you repeat things, it works for me.
I like how u expound.. clear, details, perfect.
Amazing beginner friendly video about carving - thank you!
Oooh I liked this video. I’m going to use this in my ceramics class to have my students make test tiles with.
Thanks! Very helpful for a beginner. Like discussion on tools and uses and demo of techniques.
It would be nice to show how to glaze carved work? Using brush or dip glazing?
Such a great teacher. Thank you for the great video.
😂 I love the funny voice "oh my god". Thank you so much for this video ❤ I have been super nervous about carving .
CLAY BOOGERS 🤣. I’ve never heard of those bits of clay referred to like that
I agree that carving is easy, but deciding what to carve is not! Making that first mark is scary. Thanks for sharing!
It's me, I'm the "carve all day" person. :D
How timely. I am taking a class that involves carving tomorrow.
I feel like the wires on the Kemper WLS are too thick to be comfortable carving for me. I absolutely adore my Kemper WS, it's a smaller wire stylus that carves much cleaner (in my opinion) and just feels better. The WS "cuts" through the clay, while the WLS feels more like I'm pushing or plowing it through the clay. I also use one of the super-cheap ribbon tool sets for some variety, they're like $5-10 online.
Can someone please give me a link to the music that was used in this video?? The music that Dante posted in the description up above is a completely different song.
I'm new to ceramics, but carve stamps. Is there any reason I shouldn't use my carving tools for stamps/lino to carve clay? I'm all about not having to purchase more stuff, plus I have already a little skill with those tools.
I'd really like to see you lube up a pot with Sodium Silicate and blow dry it like its going out of style!
hahaha we have exactly the 4 types of people in the pottery class!
Hi ENC, I've done two two-hour (once a week) class = beginner. What I want to know is how old is the thrown cup/mug that you have thrown? A few hours? I have no idea what stage 'leather' is achieved. I ask because it may be impossible to carve in class - I may have to take the pots home with me to carve if the leather stage occurs 3-4 hours after being thrown.
Did you ever find the answer to this question?
Hi. I am very verynew to pottery. So which tool should I start using for carving 1st?
Should I buy the Kepler or the diamond core tool
You make it seem so easy when i try carving it turns out like something DoodleBob would make.
Nevermind I tried it today and it was easy. Thank Dante
Did you say "clay boogers"? LOL I hope so and I was cracking up
Hi I have a question about drawing on greenware. If I draw over underglaze with just a regular pencil will it burn of in the kiln? I've also made many smudges and erase marks. I keep getting conflicting answers when looking it up online
A regular pencil would burn off because it's carbon and not actual glaze materials but if you use an underglaze pencil it would not burn off
Most carbon things will burn off in the kiln. Leaves, hair, ppl, sometimes bone
@@EarthNationCeramics ok thanks!
I'm somehow all those kinds of potters. I like to throw all kinds of pieces and experiment with different glazes and carve and pull handles... Now I kinda get why my teacher stares for a moment every time she asks me what am I doing next.
You will find that there are many Potter's out there who stick to one or two shapes and either will not move out of their comfort zones or it's basically the thing they sell.
I was def a carver
Hi. Can you spell the name of the tool. I am in India. I can't understand the name
It’s a PEAR TRIM TOOL that made the leaves 🙂
...those students you described? Uhh...I think I’m all of them.
...I’m majoring in Drawing...
This is awkward.
I hate to say this, i truly do, i usually love all if your vids.... But this effect looks horrible. Sloppy and unrefined.
Sorry.
I appreciate your feedback
