  • To embrace the work from home dad life, I decided to build myself a backyard office space. Check out how with the help of family and friends, I create this new workspace.
    Mistakes are made, the struggle is real and the end result is 100% worth it.
    Thanks for watching & hope to hang out again in the next video!

    Thank you to everyone who's watched this video and shared such love in the comments. At times I almost put the camera away and I'm happy I was able to put this video together. I'm now in my 2nd winter and still enjoying all that hard work from the build, love this space. The comments bring me back to this vid and make me smile so thank you again!
    For anyone who is thinking about building their own space - my mindset was its going to be hard and cost me no matter the time so I might as well do it now while I know i can. My other advice would be to get a nail gun and knee pads.
    Much Love
    - Drew ❤

    Man, you did a great job! It brought back a lot of memories from a few years ago when I built my little off-grid shed/house -- both the parts where it's like "yay! I did that!" and also the parts of "no. never again." Excellent job, and I really enjoyed the video itself, too.

      I’ve grown up around residential construction so it’s not new me. The challenge I run into is dealing with planning and zoning red tape.
      When covid hit I decided to indulge my interest in architecture by designing and having built a new foyer onto out house, followed by a total renovation of the separate garage building behind our house. Transforming it with out altering the foot print from a dark, freezing cold art and wood shop into jewel box music studio/art gallery with an art studio( which I’ve out grown). I’m always day dreaming and planning what I’ll do next.

    I'm a stay-at-home dad as well and a father of 2 sets of twins. I am glad to see you do this project and know exactly what you went through. We built one for my wife during the pandemic and the sheet rock and insulation was a pain and tedious. But once it's done it's well worth it and they can be a great value to your home. I do regret putting in too much insulation because in the summer it's extremely hot and a portable AC is a must-have! I'm now ready to build a floating wood deck on the outside.

    This is an amazing build! I've been thinking about doing something like this as well. I'm also a work from home dad so the space would be massively helpful. Just curious, what did you use to secure the stud walls to the concrete slab? Also, did you use drip edges or gables on the edges of the metal roof? Last question, did you have a set of plans you followed or did you plan and build it out yourself? If I decide to move forward, I'll have to get some of your artwork on the wall when it's complete.

    • @Elseweyr
      @Elseweyr  Před rokem

Good luck and enjoy the process if you get after it!

    Really cool, man! Just curious, since I didn't see it in the video (or maybe I missed it) - what did you guys anchor the walls to the slab with? I didn't see any bolts or anything in the concrete. Wasn't sure what you guys used?

    You’re the first person I’ve seen that didn’t put plywood on the frame before sealing and putting the exterior walls up.

    • @Elseweyr
      @Elseweyr  Před rokem

      I almost did it that way but then a wise builder with more experience helped. The smart siding boards I used doubled up as the sheathing and the exterior.

    Awesome build! One question though. Don't the outside walls usually get T&G, then weather barrier, then siding? Was there a reason you just did weather barrier then siding?

    • @Elseweyr
      @Elseweyr  Před 2 lety

      Thank you! I used a product by LP Smartside that doubles as a sheathing and exterior for the structure. So I weather wrapped the studs and put the smartside on next.

    With the high back yard. How do you deal with drainage? All that water flowing down to your shed and house.

    • @Elseweyr
      @Elseweyr  Před 4 měsíci

      The only issue i've had was from a big rain storm, had to reroute my gutters away from the shed. Probably an obvious fact but the floor does get cold so less efficient heating in the winter. In the summer I dig the cool floor. Overall i'm still happy with it. Thanks for watching and the comment!

    Does your city require zoning approval and a building permit?? With the shed at the bottom of that slope in the yard, does water runoff pool at that (low end) end of the shed? Any termite shield below the bottom wall plate and concrete slab? Any roof venting (I guess not)? Rafter ties?

    • @Elseweyr
      @Elseweyr  Před rokem

      I was under the size requirements for a permit. I added more drainage around the perimeter and I haven’t had any water issues. I added a barrier under the bottom wall plates for bugs. No roof vent but did add rafter ties.

    Wow I must say that came out very nice. I’m going to be building something very similar soon for my daughter for her to use as a nail salon. One question is did you have to get any permits?? I live in Los Angeles, CA and here you don’t need any permits for anything under 120sq, I’m going to have to stay under that which would be 10x12.

    • @Elseweyr
      @Elseweyr  Před rokem +1

      Thank you! It’s the same here since it’s a small structure it fits in the shed classification and didn’t need permits. Good luck and enjoy the build ❤️

      This is from Los Angeles building and safety website. “One-story detached accessory buildings used as tool and storage sheds, playhouses and similar uses, provided the gross floor area does not exceed 120 square feet, the height does not exceed 12 feet, and the maximum roof projection does not exceed 24 inches, are exempt from building permits. However, any electrical, plumbing or mechanical equipment installed in these structures do require separate permits. In addition, all structures regardless of size must comply with applicable zoning requirements. Please refer to the Department of Regional Planning website for more information on zoning requirements”

    Great project. Curious about the wall construction. It looked like you put on the vapor barrier/house wrap over naked studs, then put the external sheething on top of that. Why not clad the studs in OSB/Plywood, then apply the wrap and siding? Cheers.

      Thank you! I wanted my back wall to be 8’ high and then did some research on roof pitches. I went with a 12’ front wall to help with snow in the winter since I live in the Midwest. If you need to watch a much more in depth video / series - checkout Woodness Goodness on CZcams. He’s currently building a similar cabin and providing lots of info on it! Good luck with your build. My one advice to my future self would be to buy a nail gun and knee pads 😂

    Drew I don't know what is your actual profession but really it seems like you nailed this mate!! Like how are you so good at all these trades? Now I'm going to have to check code of building to see if I can do my own shed, I have way less yard that you do (downtown ATL).. but that could free a room for the kids since we both work from home as well... Anyways awesome job thank you for documenting it. What would you do different/better if you had to redo it?

      @Elseweyr  Před rokem +1

      Thank you! Thank you! If you can do it, I recommend. If i were to do it again, I’d buy a nail gun and knee pads to save time and my body some pain. I’d also see how spray insulation would work too. Today it’s -9 outside and has me thinking of ways to make it better for these conditions. I also made my ceilings high so i might put a loft in here if it makes sense. Otherwise I’m really happy with how it turned out and I spent the majority of my days in here working and relaxing.
