gabriel i have seen a variation of the long guard called the dracula guard. basically what you do is you kind of wrap your right hand on your face in a way where your palm is faces outwards on top of your left shoulder to catch overhands and your elbow protects you from uppercuts, the left hand you basically stick out just with the traditional long guard. i think i saw some old thai legend showcase this, maybe you can check it out and experiment with it and see how it feels and how well it can work. it looked to me to be very solid for head defense but it leaves your body open and you don't have much options for attacking, i'm assuming it's better for when you wanna close the distance safely and clinch.
I was just introduced to this recently from a great Thai fighter! Also seen it used by a boxer as well…
Shout out to Sylvie muaythai, the GOAT. I learned this from Her too
I knew that but didn't know what it was called
you know anyone who fights with this kind of guard?
Bro i was legit doing that without even knowing its a thing😮
@@OliverOils i dont remember the name of the fighter who used this, but since he was from a previous era i doubt you will find much footage. your best bet is to go to the channel called "
Sylvie von Duuglas-Ittu - Muay Thai" and find videos about the dracula guard there. sylvie has a section called muay thai library where you will see that guard and other unique techniques from golden era thai fighters
We have been working on Long Guard these past two weeks in class and this video was so refreshing, thanks, Gabriel.
Needed this!! Thank you
Thank you for this Gabriel
This was a really great breakdown!
Awesome dude! I always had my long guard left hand high at opponent's head, I will lower it to their chest from now on. Great tips as always! Cheers!
Gabriel Varga the striking guru and legend, thanks for this video from a guy who his hands can scratch his knees without bending,i really have long arms
Thank you coach.
Nice. Drilling this tomorrow
Love it! Thanks for the content!
My pleasure!
I've come from a tkd background taking up mma. I seem to naturally go into a long guard and get picked apart by guys with a lot more experience than me. Thanks fir the tips. If i can get this down a bit better I'll be happier working on closing the distance. Rather than trying to just get into my default comfort zone of completely out of ramge where neitger of us can land anything.
Man, if this episode, was just a little glimpse of what the defense course will be Gabriel, it will definetly be worth any price, thank you so much for explaining the long guard this is going to be so helpful for me, and yeah I will be aware of the uppercuts and the overhands as well! 🎉
Good shot bro
Good shit bro
Im a boxer , but i like this channel, and i have to say you and these kickboxer/muay thai guys have crazy balance. I only deal with punches and i still make sure im balanced on both feet as i block, i even slightly sit down as i block. And im seeing you guys checking kicks or lifting the leg up like shown in the video and i know dealing with kicks too on one foot and i know you are still well balanced. That blows me away
I do have a question, how does this long guard work out in boxing? I see boxers post all the time but i never see the actual long guard technique in boxing. Im going to see what my coach says on that but my coach is also a world champ in kickboxing too so i know he would have the right advice foe me. Im always looking for different ways to add to my boxing arsonal and if something is usable for me in boxing i will train it and ingrain it and use it.
in boxing there is no high risk to close the distance, there is no elbows, no knees, no engaged clinching etc, so no much use for long guard IMO
I see what you mean, but closing the distanse itself is dangerous , theres always that risk of running into punches, also in close range there is hooks and uppercuts , thats why they say in boxing "dont hook with a hooker" some guys can really crack. In other sports im aware that there is knees, elbows, etc.... and there is also a thing in boxing called posting which is just like the long guard but when i see it done its not as compact with the non-posting side. I not too compfterble with reaching when im boxing anyways. I been boxing for 13 years and i always consider myself a student of the game and ive evolved alot by keeping an open mind and learning and useing what could be applyed.
You have a blessed day,
And thank you for your input
Just gotta watch for the uppercuts got it.
Hi Gabriel, I understand the use of the long guard like a "sticky parry" in long range, but I always thought about really throwing the jab at short range, instead of just posting. Can you explain me the pros and cons?
Can you please make one about breaking it? Would really help
He mentions all the errors that can be made in this video?
@@verrico7536 you are right, the problem is some I train with do not make those errors
As mentioned I touched on a couple.
But I have many more ways to break it down.
So yes, I can make something on that.
@@GabrielVargaOfficial that would be so helpful 😊
Strikes off the long gaurd next?
Gabriel, i was wondering something. Do you ever regret having chosen the path of professional fighting?
Hi Gabe, I find using the long guard very difficult for opponents with longer reach than me. Are there any workarounds, or should I use it sparingly with people with long arms?
tip 1: dont use the long guard when fighting people specifically with longer reach than you. thats common sense but i love helping peoples
How do u get on the list
Would you say this works better or worse as a Southpaw?
Prolly worse bc of the liver being open. The stiff arming/posting with your long guard nullifies most of the power, but it doesn’t take a lot of force to cause a liver KO.
My long guard sucks
Im short everyone taller than me
Is it less effective if your shorter?
Yeah not as much, use it sparingly

I see way too many videos about the use of long guards . There isn’t any for how to deal with it from an opponent who uses the long guard
I don’t know if you have any children yet Gabe
But if you do it would be a great video to let us know how you managed your schedule as a pro fighter while also having a little one to look after
No kids for me yet.
It’s all fun and games until they slip your arm like it’s a jab
Then proceed to get kneed in the head
Yeah that’s what Dekkers used to do, but just because there’s a counter to it doesn’t mean it isnt effective, every technique has a counter to it, what determines its success rate is the timing. Long guard is normally used to intercept an attack and it’s not a static position that’s being held there, you’re supposed to pulse in and out of the long guard.
@@marshallmaia8130 yeah I agree I just said the comment because I’ve done it myself and also I thought it was funny
That’s why he specifically said to post on their chest and not the head. You can’t slip a jab at the chest
It's all cool until someone shoots your elbow on an extended arm. Auch
Im sorry gabriel but you don't know too much of how to use the long guard as a nak muay can do, they are more tricks and informations
