Really love your video, you look really nice :)
This just satisfied that little kid in me that ALWAYS wants to see how it works...this way, I'm not the one breaking anything.
Happy to break it all for you!
I always enjoy it when things go back together correctly and then work! Great video my friend!
Such a good feeling! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video, i purchased a 2nd hand One which had a dented grill ....... no more, now i have been able to safely separate it I have tapped it back into shape. Like it never happened, thank you Kirby
The double feelings of "oh this is interesting!" and "don't hurt that poor speaker!" at the same time đ
Hahahaha same
I can't see what Amplifier chips and DACs are used in this sonos iteration, did anyone distinguished it ?
I love the way you have changed your style delivery. You seem happier! Keep it up
Definitely having more fun! Thanks for watching!
Well done. Good to see a manufacturer that allows access to drivers so they can be replaced.
Watched this with no interest in a Sonos, but still watched and enjoyed the teardown. Going to be building myself my first sub box and cabinets for separates in the next few weeks. Got a plan now just need the materials.
Thanks for watching! Good luck with your project!
Interesting tear-down/rebuild of the Sonos.. I've done similar with other brands' speakers
So much fun! Thanks for watching!
Thanks Kirby! I was actually quite curious of the hardware differences between the gen1 & gen2. I also appreciate the dancing, such satisfaction in reassembling and having it repaired / functioning!
I loved watching this. â More things should be able to be taken apart (and put back together again!) and I love the curiosity here. â I also liked hearing your comments on the glass fibers in the ABS. â I learned a â âfew things there.
â
There's a general feeling of "Buy a new one!" when something breaks, rather than repairing it yourself. â But it's usually cheaper and quicker to fix it yourself. â I can't tell you how many 3.5 inch phono plugs I've replaced (male & female) on various devices, and most of the time, that broken connector was the reason it was tossed out.
â
Be curious! â Take things apart! â And learn how it all works!
The interesting part of the sonos is the active filter to separate the tweeter sound from the boomer. This is an active active crossover filter managed the processor like a DSP. So there is a bi-amp : it mean a separate amp for the tweeter and the bass speaker.
Itâs not an old school filter with caps and coils.
The DSP parameters can be set in function of the room thanks to the mobile app. This is very intelligent.
Except that I donât like a lot the amp : there is a little hiss when the amp is on. But it still a very good speaker for this small enclosure (better price/sound quality than sonos 3 or 5). I look forward the ikea/sonos version if it is the same than the play one it will be the best speaker for the price.
Thank you so much! I want to paint the housings, and this video is just what I needed. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Bro,please make this with the new symfonisk (Ikea x Sonos) Speakers and lets see if whe can remove the regular Speaker and put the receiver unit on a regular subwoofer,so we dont have to spend 700 on a Sonos Sub :)
Always interesting to see what's inside. Thanks for the teardown and glad it still works. Built my first speakers back in high school (35+ years) mainly because I couldn't afford anything else. I cursed at them every time I moved but loved the sound. Nowhere as fine as the stuff that I have seen you put together, would be great to get your kit. Cheers, Scott
Thank you from Brazil!
Thanks for all the info you have provided me with!!
Thanks for watching!!
@@KirbyMeetsAudio Absolutly!!! I actually followed along with your prototype speakers in your 5 part series and am currently building them for myself, but with a front port. I just got a little carried away with getting a really clean paint job and I think I'm on my 3rd painting run.
Crossing fingers for the KMA kit. Good luck everyone .

You're the first reviewer to really give any credence to why the did a second generation of the One (not including the Play:1). I had a few original Play:1's and I still think they're a great investment (if you're buying second hand).
thanks for the effort to keep us updated on the latest.
Tx for all you do to help us learn more. I saw your kit and they look great. I wish i could have one!
Great video! Been watching your stuff for a long time. Your videos inspired me to start making speakers! Your white and walnut faced book shelf speakers are one of my favorite.
Love hearing that! Thanks so much for watching!
Nice teardown, have owned a PLAY:1 in the past and today got a Sonos One (Gen 2) for the new kitchen. I think it has 512MB of ram versus 256MB, but the chips for in gigabit, for 4Gbit == 512 Mbyte. Plenty for all the DSP / networking this little guy needs.
Really enjoying the chilled out feel of your latest vids.
Sealed box, interesting. Must be the reason for high excursion LF. Foam wrap, nice! Lots of buzz treatment everywhere.
Great video! Been checking your videos out for a few months now. Inspired me to tackle gutting a mid century GE record player console and updating it with modern components. I truly enjoy your videos. Thank you!
I like that you take stuff apart like I do. "Welp...hope I don't break this..."
Great job of disassembly and especially the reassembly! I have a number of Sonos products and don't like to see one hurt.
Hahaha same here. All with love â€ïž
Bad speakers, sonos and ikea speakers are the same thing , different package!!
Those were some pretty nice looking drivers.
They are! Real quality construction. Thanks for watching!
I'm impressed you didn't break it. That's usually what happens when I try to do something like this. đ
Nice teardown, it is always nice when things work when they go back together.
Always thought these guys had a passive radiator to tune this bad Larry down since it digs deep for its size. Debunked! Super cool teardown.
Always like seeing teardowns
Always like doing them!
Thanks Kirby
Lol that face you made when it popped Haha priceless! Thanks for sharing!
Heat shrink or plastic straw (similar) of appropriate size on screwdriver to hold screw works, like injecting a screw with syringe
I loved your face expression when you reassembled the speaker and try to test it. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
interesting to see the build of a high quality speaker. most would be so scared to do this.
Kirby, hot air from a hairdryer does marvels against those stickers
Bery good tip đ
I like it because its different from what you do I was waiting to hear you say ok wooden box đŠ enclosure next.....
This was such a classic KMA video ! Loved it.
Play:1 is dirt cheap on second hand market. We need a vid tear down to see if soldering an Aux in is possible. Could link an old airport express to them for airplay 2 and breathe new life into them!
You the best CZcamsr ever
Great Teardown and very informative, Really like your stuff
Thanks for watching Martin!
Interesting to see how compact it is inside. Good job :)
Pretty awesome design!
Hey Kirby. Kinda interesting, although i would never buy speakers like that. Looking forward to the new shop tour and bigger speaker builds!
Both coming in the future! Thanks!
I like the way you having fun with your screwdriver, is it new hahaha that will be me
nice video Kirby love to see the guts of electronics keep the cool videos coming
Will do my man! If you keep watching!
Awesome vid. The noise bit on the back plate scared me too! Love the video. Keep em coming!
thank you for all the informative videos, always fun to watch!
Do you have a link for that tool kit you used? Really interesting video...glad it still worked afterwards.
Always use heat when removing stickers. Something like a hair dryer or a heat gun on low setting.
The sticker is probanly a mouse dampening membrane to take away unwanted vibration between the screen and the housing.
Love the videos as always! You have definitely started me on a new hobby! Ready to see more of your CNC design work.
Cool video, always wanted to see what was inside these
Me too! Thanks for watching
I'd love a kit! I've been fancinated by woodwork for quite a while now, I repaired an old subwoofer for my car - turned out looking like crap, and sounding pretty bad too, but hey - it was free! I also built a couple of headrest speakers, that sounded totally horrible (cheap speakers and bad recycled wood). So it would be awesome to build something that actually would sound nice. The looks... well I'm not making any promises. Oh, Added difficulty if you happen to choose me. I live in Sweden. All the best dude!
So, you need to cut open a piece of the "sticker" with a knife in order to access the screw heads that would otherwise not be visible?
How did you manage to locate the exact positions of the various screws?
Would love to have one of your speaker kits! Love the videos keep them coming.
Thanks so much for watching!
Seeing your videos made me want to make my own speaker cabinet. So I bought a bluetooth 5.0 amplifier board from china and now I am after speakers that covers a noce range of frequencies to make it happen. Thanks for the inspiration.
P.S.: Finding those speakers are harder than I tought, I am completely lost not knowing where to search and triying no to make it not too much expensive.
Iâve repaired a few of these, I hate the WiFi features makes testing them a nightmare
That 4Gb means 4 gigabits - 512MB. It's also not a quad core - it has a Cortex A9 at 1GHz and a Cortex M4 at 250-ish MHz. Did you get a chance to look at how the channels are done? As far as I can tell there's no crossover; it just uses a stereo amplifier to run the tweeter and woofer channel, and does the rest in software.
Would be interesting to see a tear down of a high end speaker to compare to DIY speaker build.
Love that idea! On the list. Thanks for watching!
âLetâs see if she lets the smoke out.â
đ haha good video as usual. Iâm kinda surprised there were no weird wave guides or anything... just a woofer with an absurdly large magnet. I guess they get their oomph from signal processing
This was therapeutic to watch. Excellent video my dude!
Would be really nice to see a measurement of the tweeter and woofer output from the amplifier and see what processing has been applied, at different output levels.
Hey Kirby, you missed the two front antennas on the left and right side of the tweeter
Interesting video and you know the lingo, great work! Those microphones (look like MEMS) could have their opening on the underside, where the solder is, and listen through a hole in the PCB.
My Sonos One SL is similar, and its power supply went dead - or something. I tore it open and couldn't reconnect the antenna leads with that funky waxy glue. I tried melting it with a torch, but am not sure I made good contacts - the coax doesn't exactly snap back in. I also got the power to work magically, for about a minute. Then it heated up and crashed again.
BTW - this happened 2 months after the warranty expired, which Sonos wouldn't honor. I'm not exactly friends with them right now.
I would love to see you take the boards inside the Sonos and make a custom speaker with Sonos internals.
I have one of these and never thought there would be as much electronics in this thing. 4GB ram? Quad core processor? What for?
Interesting! I get to learn what's inside without destroying mine! Lol! Love the channel! Keep it up!
Nice vid Kirby, that means I don't have to do that myself on my own
Happy to help! đ
Insert the loudspeaker with accessories into the built-in wooden casing, see if it will sound better
You should see about integrating the sonos gear into one of your kit speakers
I alwys have been struggling with myself with these type of speakers. Small enclosures, tight space, no air vents for heat... They can't be good. They sound plastic, no bass production...
And yet there are a few companies who designed and build very good speakers making my brain goes...
" wtf..... no way...... Not possible...... How...... Shit... brain overload"
i realize they just a lot of dsp processing to make it sound right but still...
RESPECT! although they use dsp it is a difficult job to create some strong quality sounding speakers in this size....
This was awesome to watch thanks!
Youâre so awesome for watching!
It would be cool to see you build your own enclosure for this.
đĄ great idea! Iâll put it on the list. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video! Will def be checking out your speakers!
Nice video, entertaining well presented and edited.
Bet you won't send a kit to Australia đ
Your vids are always informative and fun. Keep up the work. I have been watching and subscribed for a few years . I woul love to have one of your speaker kits for my livingroom but my current financial situation has me too limited to get one. Again awesome as always brotha!!
Thanks Kirby. Any chance of doing a Sonos beam teardown? Love to compare insides
Great idea! Maybe!
How does the sonos one sound compared to your elder bluetooth kit, they are about the same price so...just wondering...
I would say (being very unbiased) my elder speaker sounds MUCH better than this guy. Stereo vs mono. BUT if you plan to build out a whole home audio network setup, the Sonos is the right choice. Thanks for watching!
Loved this vodeo. Saw a teardown of the Play:1 -- the One 2nd Gen seems more complicated imside.
Cam you please do a teardown of the Sonos Beam? I'd really appreciate it.
Nice video! Thank you. Awesome cap by the way!
I would love to see a tear down of the Sonos five
Better yours than mine!
Is anyone else still waiting on a kit from his website? Seems to be a problem with a couple of people and he doesn't seem to respond to anything.
I liked the tear down my man keep up the good work!
I was wondering the difference between play 1 and one. Very similar
What!? No leftover screws?! Impossible.
Kirby, I gotta ask are you just a super audio nerd or are you/were you a professional in the consumer electronics realm in a "previous life"? The reason I ask is because you have some real knowledge about the construction, manufacturing processes and materials that are used in consumer electronics. I really enjoyed this video. Keep up the great work! Thanks! -Andy
Would you be able to get a closer look at the other side of that top PCB at 6:09 please - some are saying that there are only 4 mics in the Gen2 vs the 6 mics that were in the Gen1 and I wonder if there were any on the top of the unit?
Savage audio đ
Please make a teardown of Bose Home Speaker 300.đ
Yay! KMA kit! :finger_crossed:
So interesting. Cheers!
Nice, funny, interesting and instrucktive video! Keep on like that !
Interesting design seems well-built but it's still not streaming music and stereo..you should possibly build your own Bluetooth streaming 2.1 that would actually be in stereo and have some bass
Gen 1 uses Japanese Nichicon capacitors. Gen 2 uses cheap Chinese Capxon capacitors.
