I knew I could count on you to help me with this! I bought a fro for my wife last Christmas, and have been ruminating over a mallet ever since. Now, having seen you make and use the mallet, I'm good to go. Also, the footage of you using the fro is perfect to show my wife. Nicely done. Thank you.

Linn that looked like a lot of fun and a lot of work at the same time. Give Darwin the small one so he will not be as inclined to go after the bigger one. Working with your hands, I think, is so rewarding and relaxing. I try to work with my hands at least 3or4 times a week.
Thanks for sharing and God bless

This is very timely. I have been making kindling from already split oak by using a larger fixed blade and swinging a piece of firewood down as my mallet. This project affords for a much safer and ergonomic means by which force is applied to my blade. Thanks!

When you beat that one to death, see if you can get a length from a small tree with the root ball, a maul made from the root ball will last a lot longer with all the interlocked grain. Roy Underhill did a show on making a maul way back when he was starting out on PBS.

You would do better tapering the handle into the larger end instead of an abrupt change - much stronger.
The best way to use a froe is tap and pry, tap and pry.
Others have indicated looking up Roy Underhill - the woodwright - he has info on making mauls / using froes.
And finally, I think I love you 😌

Have you ever used a drawknife bench? Being able to sit comfortably and clamp down hard on the wood by just shifting your foot makes working with the drawknife so much faster and easier than constantly opening and closing a clamp. And seems like it is the sort of thing that would fit nicely with your channel's content.

  • @dirtdevilrcmotorsports

Happy New Year to you and your family Lynn. That maul is an awesome idea and looked very easy to make, but that log splitter seems a little bit like hard work and even a little dangerous with the way it moves around when its hit. Please be careful when your using it I don't want to see you get hurt.
How is August doing? I hope he is well. Is he crawling and getting into mischief yet? I see Darwin is a mummies boy as usual where ever you are there he is. Does he and August get along and play together? I look forward to seeing more great videos from you this year.
