Cummins 5.9 thumping sound

It’s normal …you may need to adjust your valves …mine does it every time an intake valve gets a little tight

You ever figure out what was making the noise? My 01 has a very similar sound. Its most noticeable when its cold, but as the truck warms up it starts to fade but I can still pick up on it same as yours.

My Cummings isx15 in my 18?wheeler does the same thing

Kevin Jackson I think the isx naturally sounds like that. I used to drive the isx 15 before my company switched me over to the Detroit diesel. Made that sound climbing a grade.
