Without a doubt the most controversial plane in the sky right now is the Boeing 737 MAX. After two tragic accidents, this narrow body passenger jet was grounded in 2019 and had to undergo a stringent recertification process. A few weeks ago however, the FAA granted the MAX clearance to fly again and shortly after American Airlines scheduled the first passenger flights between Miami and New York. I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of this historic event and booked a flight on the first day of operations in the USA. This trip report covers this momentous day and the second domestic flight AA's 737 MAX 8 would make from LGA to MIA!

LOL..."If I'm gonna go down, I might as well do so in luxury." My thoughts exactly.
Ha ha
Very kind of the pilot to voice his confidence in the Max. I would be comfortable flying in one regardless but most people who are still rightfully cautious probably had a sigh of relief after hearing that.
Yeah at the end of the day I don’t really care about what the airline/Boeing says. I’ve had a chance to speak with a few pilots about the MAX and they were fine with it. Thanks for watching
Kelsey from 74Gear pretty much stated that he wouldn’t fly anything if there was a question about safety. I have to believe that this is common amongst all pilots, especially given the history of the max.
I think the two previous crashes were caused by operator error, not the fault of the aircraft. If the pilots are trained properly, there should be no problem flying on the Max.
@@JamesSmith-qv9qo no, there was issues with the software literally pushing the nose down and the pilot couldn’t do anything about it
@@sethfriedman6339 They could have manually over-ridden the MCAS System and regained full control of the aircraft but of course, they didn't. It wasn't stated in their training. If the pilots knew how to disable MCAS before it was too late, that aircraft would still be in the air. Of course with a few new sensors and an updated software system along with a few physicals tweaks.
The reason that these crashes happened was because Boeing tried their best to hide MCAS from pilots and tell them that it was basically the same aircraft. If Boeing had told airline pilots about MCAS and how to disable it, the crashes would have never happened. If the planes survived, it probably would have made the investigation a lot easier. Those two MAX 8s had faulty AOA sensors (Angle Of Attack Sensors) which caused the aircraft to think it was about to stall. It then pushed itself nose-down, and then crashed.
With replacements of those sensors with functional and reliable ones, a few physical tweaks to all MAX aircraft, and an MCAS software update, the MAX wouldn't have been grounded for as long, if at all. Literally all Boeing had to do was tell pilots,"Hey, this new plane produces a lot more lift than the older ones so, we made with software to fix it. It basically pitches the plane down whenever the nose is dangerously high. So, just incase the software goes crazy, just flick those two Stab-Trim switches to "Off" and fly the aircraft more carefully, always paying attention to your pitch okay? Alright, safe-travels guys!". If they did that, I think there is a 99.99% chance that all of those passengers would have survived. Training is very important when making a new plane.
Well he survived.
Because he posted this video.
But-

Lol
Of course I’d fly on the MAX. Now it’s up to the carriers to keep maintenance of the aircraft as is any aircraft.
Just flew on this plane twice from Hartford to Miami and back again after traveling to Cancun. Really love this plane. Comfortable, not too loud, nice lighting, smooth, and the cabin air felt cleaner than other aircraft’s I’ve flown in. AA did a great job
I agree! The MAX is a very comfortable plane

Nice 👍🏻
I flew on this many times before the fatal crash.. I was also next to the crew that came to fly one of the MAX 8 that was at our airport after the grounding in Barbados. They had no reservations taking it back up to the USA even though they were grounded.
Totally. As soon as I have the chance. Like you said, it’s probably the safest plane flying right now.
Nice! Thanks for watching
You can rake risks if you want.. I’ll travel safe and sound on an Airbus a320
😍😍max back into service😍😍
Love to see my boi flying again!
Lovely video!
Beautiful plane, I'm happy it gets back to the sky !
Yes, i will love to fly in the 737 Max
Amazing report there! Great video and a Happy New Year!
Thank you! Happy New Year
Awesome vid :)
Great Video! Loved the structure and the amount of detail.
I would certainly fly the MAX without hesitation.
The thing that I hate about the media is that they blame Boeing for EVERYTHING, like that Air Canada MAX engine, or the 777x delays, or the Trent 1000 issues, or when any Boeing plane gets involved in something like an engine failure. Just because Boeing is to blame for MCAS and CHS quality issues doesn't mean they're to blame when Rolls Royce didn't design their engines right or when GE had to recall their engines.
indeed, the Lion crash was Boeings fault. But nobody talks about the airlines reputation overall and the worst training all these pilots had. The crashed some 737 planes. One into the water for weird reasons and i thought an other one on the ground (not included the MAX). Also there maintenace isn't from high quality. I hate all these people who's blaming everything nowadays on aviation. From CO2 problems to crashes and spreading the Covid virus. They don't know how the aviation works, so they need to shut up. I don't know much about football so when i talk with someone about it i would hold my mouth if it becomes difficult.
Well said
@@jouniairplanevideos you clearly don't know much about this subject either so you should shut up too
@@ant2312 yeah sur, you knows everything. What I said is true.
The crashed plane had the MCAS issue before, when pilots switched off the MCAS system and carried on there flight as normal. They complaint about it to the Airline itselves. So the crashed crew wasn't well enough trained about situation awareness, and switching off systems. Why overruling a system or trying it) when you could switch it off? Or if you don't, let the system work and take the controls back then. These crashed planes could be more but somehow other pilots didn't do the things the crew of the crashed planes did. What kind of conclusion could you make out of the facts? Both crews weren't well trained on the things I mentioned. Other pilots included the crew that switch off MCAS (Boeings said it couldn't be switched off) did there flights properly and safe. So thats why i don't say its all Boeings fault. With that Indonesian crash a view press channels didn't mention that it was a B737-524 PG. Why would you don't say that if you have a picture of the missing (later crashed) plane? Thats what we mean with the press blames Boeing for everything. Then you have some press titles such like: Boeing plane crashed again!
Its the airlines fault because the (Indonesian) plane was grounded for 9 months. The limit without new testflights and/or big inspections or maintenace, the limit is max 6 months.
The climate stuff is also a thing. Some climate fools are saying and impose a opinion to people about the climate. Normal people can't say what they think or do anymore about climate or the climate fools would force you to say what they think. Or they destroy some cars or blocking streets or obstruct people wich are working on or going to an airport. Or they fly drones close to landing planes if they expand ther runway or something else. I called such people terrorist and not climate people.
So I hope you understand know what I mean and i f you don't live in th Europian Union. That climate stuff is so bad that our Government has made a law that if a CO2 level is exceeded farmers, factories and companies can't expand anymore, houses can't be build anymore and we can't drive 130kph on the road anymore.
Our country is in hostage due a stupid law made and designed by some climate fools.
@@ant2312 you're literally on every video that gives any Boeing product praise. You're ALWAYS on DJ's aviation videos, constantly shitting on Boeing. Now I see you on someone else's videos. There's no escaping you. You're like a stale fart... We get it. You hate Boeing and the world should only consist of Airbus aircraft. In your perfect world of course. 🙄
Great video! I’m glad you had a safe flight. Somehow, I’m still feeling a bit skeptical about the 737 MAX. I think that when I see a few more airlines to start 737 MAX operations, that might improve my confidence. But looking inside the AA 737 Max, it looks great (although I would have probably preferred IFE over WIFI). Thanks for sharing your experience, my friend! It’s been an honor and a pleasure to get to know you more this year. Happy New Year!
Thanks for your support! Hopefully all the issues with the MAX have been solved and more airlines will start flying them. Happy New Year 🎊

@@nycflyertravel no! Not the 737 MAXs! They’re the worst planes ever and they should be retired scrapped and never fly again. American Airlines should order 757-300s, 737-900ERs, A319NEOs, Embraer E190-E2s, A320NEOs, A330NEOs, A330-800NEOs, A330-900NEOs, and A220-300s to replace their 737 MAXs! I’m never going to fly on a 737 max!!!
@Jack Goodman sure they should, because 737 MAXs are the worst planes ever and they should be retired scrapped and never fly again because of their crashes and they’re engines have too much weight. I’m never going to fly on a 737 max. That’s why 737 MAXs suck.
🤣
It’s nice to hear the CFM LEAP still has a engine buzz sound on climb out. Nice video btw excellent job with the commentary 👍🏽

I know! Flew the Max a number of times on Norwegian and several others stateside. The engine/wing are without a doubt one of the most resilient and integrated feeling on any aircraft I've ever flown (flown almost every commercial airframe over 40 years). Despite the problematic automation that caused the problems a few years ago, the airframe and propulsion are simply amazing.
Heck yeah... its a great aircraft....
Wow! That’s LGA? It’s beautiful!
Great landing!
I just took the 737 MAX from Salt Lake to Little Rock earlier this week..I didn't know that was the plane until we got on it..tbh I was a little scared at first but honestly it was very quite and smooth..really enjoyed the plane/flight.

Thanks for watching!
I love the attitude about how much testing went into the plane and that making it one of the safest planes in the sky. As a son of a 737 captain i can confirm this. Unfortunately, and rather ironically, i am prone to great anxiety on planes and would probably be super freaked on this particular plane. But ill definitely be thinking of that positive attitude about safety whenever im in the air now! Great vid in general btw.
Thanks! Flying causes a lot of people to become anxious. Just try to remember how safe flying is. Happy travels!
Yay the max is back ..... Nice bird .

Im not ready, yet. I will avoid it for a few years. But nice video!
Fair enough. Thanks for watching Franco!

I flew on the Max on December 9. Nice airplane, good power, very quiet!
It was very comfortable to fly on. Thanks for watching!
I like this plane now
Like the fact that fix
The first travel video I saw of the reinstated Max, great to see. Your jokes in reference to the ignorance of the trollers was a humorous touch but can't help but think that it was a little bit insensitive towards the people who actually lost their loved ones due to the heinous negligence of Boeing as well as the FAA. Its just a polite observation. All the best for your channel though
Wow - LaGuardia looks a little like a mini Changi - what a transformation!! Hope everything is sorted with the Max - remember seeing one in the flesh and thinking it looked awesome!
Yeah I was so surprised at how nice LGA looked. Thanks for the comment!
More than happy to fly on a MAX. So terrible it took two fatal accidents for problems to be resolved, but ironically its now probably one of the safest in the sky
I flew this same flight (LGA-MIA in an AAL MAX) 1 week before the Ethiopian crash. I remember it being really comfortable and quiet. Still gives me chills knowing I flew on a seriously flawed aircraft.
Agreed. With everything that was done in the last 2 years, the MAX is probably the safest plane in the skies.
Yeah I can understand why a lot of people are wary of flying on it, but I felt totally safe.
Yeah I agree the Dreamliner head battery problem and it is now one of the most bought aircraft
Its not,,, it was designed around a freaking set of stairs (ramp what ever ) ,,, and that is a fact .

Amazing Video, amazing airplane! There is some serious fire going on in the distance when landing at around 8:56 Min!
And yes, I would fly on a MAX! Right now with a little strange feeling, but after a few months of safe operations without any concerns.
Thanks! I saw that fire while we were landing, but I had no idea what caused it. Thanks for watching!
Came here for the comments. Was not disappointed.
Interesting!
True, with all those scrutiny and redesign, the B-737 max is now a very safe aircraft! I would fly it any given day! Nice video man! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching!
I flew on a MAX8 from TPA - MIA in February of 2019, and I survived. Unfortunately, I sat in the very last row of economy, which had minimal leg room. At least I was the only one sitting in the last row, and it was only a 40 minute hop.
Thank you for bringing me some peace.... I will be flying this 737 MAX 8 from JFK to MIA right before I board a 777-300ER from MIA to Brazil on Feb 19, 2021! I was freaking out hahaha
You’ll be fine! Hope you enjoy your flight!

Yes of course I will 👍
I will now fly it 😊

Yes, can't wait to fly on the MAX!
I was concerned about the Max before all the safety issues happened. I remember reading that AA flight crew members wrote to the CEO about the flight experience, mainly about the size of the restrooms. I was always more concerned about the space in economy and a potentially uncomfortable flight experience.
Going down in luxury 😀😀😀😀
👍 no reservations about flying on a Max. As long as the pilots are competent, there will be no safety issues.
One of the most beautiful trip report, I will replicate this flight on my sim-channel ;) bye bye from Italy

Awesome!! I really wanted to get on the first flight, but I wasn’t able to. I will try and it fly it very soon though!! I loved the video!!
Thanks for watching! It was a great flight ✈️. I hope you can fly on the MAX soon!
I flew out of LGA Airport in 2016, with Southwest. It was pretty cramped at that time, and felt like a World War II era infrastructure. Nice to see the new refurbishments.
Agreed. LGA needed a refurbishment badly!
yo i been waiting to fly again for 4 years and looking at this video during COVID makes me feel like your teasing me with flying, lol
Haha I hope you get to fly again soon!
@@nycflyertravel same here, its funny how if people fly the 737 MAX and talk bout that its their last flight, its clear that they lived because the video is around the world now, but im planning to fly to LA sometime but i actually am flying to Puerto Rico soon, maybe during the summer.
Those huge engines are epic. I think South West are going to start using these soon. It’s possible I may use a max to get from Honolulu to California. Though it’s a 5 to 6 hour flight, so my preference is a wide-body craft on long flights.
Yeah, wide bodies are definitely better on long flights like that.
Very good video and aeromexico Jaja, you are the best
Thank you my friend!
Yeah I'd fly on this aircraft, after all the in-depth work, investigation and scrutiny this plane has gone through they've had lots of time to fix all the teething problems out. Also it's not the first new commercial aircraft model to come into service and have some safety issues.
The trusty 747 had some teething probs when it was first realised as did the DC10 and not too mention the A320 series aircraft, the latter 2 suffered a number of crashes early in their flying lives.
I did it last week. Chose 737 max for both segments from JFK-MIA -JFK . I can tell you one thing . No one is scared about flying on max . As both trips my flights were sold out . Actually AA gate staff were struggling to get people off by issuing voucher . LOL .
That’s awesome! It’s nice to see people’s attitudes softening towards the MAX. Thanks for watching 👍🏻

I'm gonna give it some time before flying on a MAX - after the 1st crash they claimed to have resolved the MCAS problems and then the 2nd crash happened
But it is too early to say i am, going to fly 737 max in the future. Still i have the fear on this model.

@@lsnead72 after something happened our comments what we shared is going to be a history like MH 370. Safety is the first and 737 Max is the second for me.
@@longlivesoothingmusic2286 I mean, the only difference between this and a regular 737 are newer engines. There was computer issues which were found as a result of rushing to compete with Airbus, and after the 2 planes went down because of the same bug, they weren't gonna let anything happen. No reason to not fly it. Just doesn't make any sense
@nycflyer I flew AAL1249 to Miami on Saturday, January 23, 2021 in the Main Cabin Extra seat 8A about 737 Max 8. It was a comfortable ride, the plane took off, cruised, got to final and ("kissed the ground") landed so smooth! On the return, January 24, I decided to fly out of Palm Beach International on the A321 sear 1A, to Charlotte, comfortable ride. The hell started when I couldn't upgrade from the bulkhead in the A319 in seat 5A, at 6,08" tall, OMG I thought my legs were going to break because I didn't realize the wall was there, oh f**k! For the hour and ten minutes, I was in pure pain shifting so much that I normally record the takeoffs and landings; not today! In fact, I bought good in Charlotte and left it in the plane trying to rush home so I can soak my legs! AAL needs to do away with those walls on all their airbuses!!
Jeez that sounds terrible! That’s why I never sit in the bulkhead. Thanks for watching Oswald!
Those seats look comfortable and wide 😁😁
Well that’s first class. The economy on American is cramped almost like a budget airline with tiny lavs. There original 737 had 160 but the project oasis -800s and the max have 172 total. First class is ok
i never flew on a jet , just a 4 seater cessna but took controls for about a minute
steering only
I have no concerns about the MAX. It's been under an electron microscope for almost the past two years. I just wish the lavatories weren't so small.
Stupid project oasis for that I think
That's an American Airlines issue. They wanted 172 seats in 3 classes in a 73H/7M8. Southwest Airlines has 175 seats in a one-class configuration on its 73H/7M8s.
I don't buy it... Boeing probably bribed the FAA and airlines to get it back in service. Boeing should've went bankrupt for what they did
@@bitchpudding2945 several other countries had their own independent safety reviews of the MAX, but go ahead and believe whatever conspiracy theories you want. I suppose we can count you out of flying on the MAX, which will just mean one more open seat for the rest of us.
