This literally gives me anxiety. I love Charlotte Mason’s philosophy on children and education... but I am so conditioned to have a paper trail. I like the idea of recording their oral narrations.

I love that comment about things going down on paper.
In 4th grade I was able to write down all of the states and capitals on paper, but there's no way I could recall them all now.

My ten and a half year old son LOVES to read and he has quite an imagination. But he HATES to write....anything! I've been trying to get him to write about a paragraph at a time every other school day on various topics. I pick things that are interesting. My question is should I have him write the paragraph or should I switch to having him narrate the paragraph instead? I guess I'm a bit afraid that if he doesn't start writing and learning how to put information down on paper, he never will!

Make sure he is comfortable with oral narration before requiring written narration. You want to set him up for success by teaching him to collect and communicate his thoughts orally first, then add the writing component. Can you homeschool under an umbrella school in your state? Can you keep daily records of educational games & educational activities in the portfolio?
