Lol it doesn’t work that way. You can basically apply that logic to all fighters.
Nick Van Tinteren it’s different. There is a difference between being stagnant ( Alexander Gustafson on the floor eating more of less shots BUT NOT moving) and then moving to regain position. You have to afford an opportunity for the fighter who is intelligently fighting (in that position Dom either can use his hands to curl up which case he ref will stop it, or use his hands to get up). IMO, it’s a TITLE fight. There is literally no harm in letting it go on 2-4 seconds more to reach an undoubtabe conclusion ESPECIALLY since there was 2 seconds left in the round

Agreed man. I didnt see the finish multiple times but from the one or two times I saw I didn’t have a problem. It’s easy when emotions are high in the moment to want to go out on your shield and I get being a competitor but long-term this man could’ve saved you serious damage and longevity. Cejudo is an animal especially at 135, getting your head used as a speed bag isn’t a fun way to go out. Same way I have no problem with the dillashaw stoppage

Too late, you let yourself get hit too much, you let yourself get to a point where a ref decided to stop it. So you recovered after the decision was made? That's about 5 shots later than you should have recovered

Now I like both fighters so I’m not tryna sound biased, but the thing with TJ though was that he got dropped 3 times in the first 32 seconds, which makes it justified. In this last stoppage there were literally 2 seconds left in the 2nd round, might as well have not stopped it at all imo.

Julio Cesar Chavez got a tko in the last 2 seconds of a fight he was way behind, its not the refs job to know the time, its to keep the fighter safe defend yourself at all times. Cruz failed not the ref

The referee’s job is the safety of the fighters and making sure rules are followed. The clock has nothing to do with it to the Ref. He can’t let a fighter take damaging shots when he is not defending himself just because there is only 20 seconds left. With that said Cruz was working to improve his position and the fight should not have been stopped at that time.

Each fighter and their corner people talk with their ref back stage for 5-15 minutes. They explain all the rules in-depth, and they have a back and forth about stoppages, verbal taps, if your corner will throw in a towel or if the ref should stop early and all that.
Like if I was fighting, I might say “if you (talking to my ref) think I’m out on my feet at all, stop it” as opposed to “I want to be knocked out cold.”
(This is from an MMA expert I asked about the stoppage and Cruz's comments, not my own words.)

I think you definitely can. He's holding himself accountable for getting hit with the knee and getting into that position in the first place, but is criticising the referee for what happened after that. Having said that, he did go on about it for far too long and got quite whiny
Jake Lay he got dropped clean and then ate 12 unanswered shots. Was losing both rounds clearly and hadn’t hit Cejudo with anything except a headbutt. Don’t force the ref to make a choice end of story. Nothing else. Don’t get dropped
Andrew Clarke he held accountability for that.. he’s just saying he was on his way back to his feet with 10 or so seconds until the end of the round. Also if you watch the replay, only about 5-6 of those shots actually landed - it wasn’t like he was getting hit with bombs. All in all, I think it was slightly early but not too upset about it

I feel like he should have stopped it earlier, for a few seconds Cruz wasn’t actually responding then when he did, and tried to get up is when the ref stopped it

"protect yourself and get to your feet" - yeah, he was getting to his feet, but Cruz did zero to "protect" himself. He was eating shots and had zero hands to even block them. Yeah, from his POV they weren't doing damage, but from the outside, it's hard to say if it's doing damage or not, so you have to default to the hits doing damage. So Cruz didn't to the first of the two conditions.
He was on his feet with two seconds left in the round in a championship fight. You don’t call that, period.

Anyone who’s actually trained or been in a fight knows that Dom was perfectly fine. I was 100% expecting for him to just ride it out for the last few seconds until the buzzer. You watch too many movies man. He was not in a bad position whatsoever.
