  • Marvin Gaye was an extraordinary talent with a wide vocal range that spanned a piercing falsetto, a smooth mid-range tenor, and a deep gospel growl. Beyond his singing abilities, he was a groundbreaking composer and producer who played a pivotal role in the artist-controlled music movement of the 70s. His style also set him apart; from the sharp, clean-cut Motown suits of the 60s to the more relaxed, funky attire of the 1970s, Gaye consistently captured attention. One article even labelled him the Granddaddy of the American heritage look. His soft-spoken, down-to-earth demeanor, coupled with undeniable charisma, added layers to his public persona. But with every high, there is a low. With every special blessing, comes a curse.

One of the cruelest things a parent can do to their child is withhold love, approval, and support. I can't see how a child can thrive and grow into a healthy, well-adjusted adult in that type of environment.

He died three years before i was born but he is my favorite male vocal artist of ALL TIME! I wished he could've seen the light at the tunnel. He was a beautiful but yet tortured soul and im sorry that his father's jealousy made him feel unloved and inferior. I hope he takes solace in knowing that his father could NEVER take away his gift and the fact that he is STILL LOVED decades after his death. And i pray that his afterlife is bringing him more peace in death than he had in life ❤

Never will I forget that Sunday morning while attending FAMU when my roommate came in and said he heard from Tallahassee legendary Radio DJ Joe Bullard on the radio that Marvin Gaye had been killed…. My immediate thought was “ Man that’s not funny!, why would Joe Bullard say that ?”… Several hours later my cousin comes over and says the same thing…. Later that evening I’m over with a group of friends studying for an Exam … we cut on the CBS Sunday News and Charles Osgood told the story about it…. Needless to say everybody on Campus was shocked especially when news came out how his death played out… Truly sad! Truly hope they could reconcile their differences on the other side🙏🏽

I'm from Denver, Colorado and I'd like to leave a comment. I always loved Marvin Gaye I live in Denver Colorado and this is my home. Gaye was supposed to do a concert here and Denver and he didn't show up so he owes me $10 lol the fans were so upset. They tore up the stadium so we didn't get our money back I was very young when this happened. I believe it was in the 80s. I did get the honor of needing his brother Frankie and Denver. He came here to play with my husband's band and a small setting and it was beautiful and he sounds just like his brother, and he said that he would neverperform because he didn't want to be a copycat of his but he sounds just like him and look just like him too. I never forget you told me I was beautiful. It hurts that he's gone. Rest in peace Marvin we love you.

Remembering the day he was killed it came out on the news and everyone who liked his music was asked to turn on their headlights. Practically every car had their lights on and those who didn’t probably didn’t get the memo. How devastating and sad 😢❤

Great doc there. Marvin was truly a tragic figure and I don't think too much would've changed either way. Most of his problems stemmed from the enmity between him and his father. Alberta Gay even said that Marvin Sr. didn't even love him on the day he was born.
IMO Marvin is in the top 5 greatest artists of all time. He was the master of the studio and if he had lived further into the '80s and into the '90s he would've been schooling all the young kids on how to make magic in the studio.
I'm pretty much drawn to tragic figures and Marvin's life was a Shakespearean tragedy in many ways. The ironies that came back around to deal him harm and the sins of the father being visited upon the son are clear with how Marvin through a haze of drugs and paranoia had his lovers do things that are beyond the pale. Marvin seemed to CRAVE suffering and it often fuelled his genius but when he was under control he was one of the most sensitive and sweetest people around.
In short, I believe Marvin was a good person at heart but the dysfunction of his life and drug dependency screwed him up terribly. Marvin probably had mental health issues that could've been taken care of but alas it was never addressed. Despite all this his music is universal in that he has at least one song for every emotion imaginable. Marvin and his music was deeply personal yet could appeal to anyone and he projected love 99.9% of the time in his music and tried to do the same in life.
Truly Marvin lives up to his own lyric: "The artist pays the price so you don't have to pay/If only we would listen to what they have to say"

I am a Motown FEEN..lol although i was a teen i remember in the early 80s when I'd see mr Gaye on tv chewing gum like it was going out of style and thought there was drugs in that gum.. i remember a story when ms Diana Ross was performing in Brussels and Marvin came to see her, that's a long ass trip but he needed to see his friend the actually concert clips from ms Ross video MISSING YOU are from that time. He told her how he just needed to run away from everything and she says how they stayed up all night listening to his new music ( which was Sexual Healing) , she would alsi talk about secrets he'd shared with her but she'd never tell..as genius and talented as mr Gaye was he was also a tortured soul and unfortunately one of many...

Marvin Gaye was "Top Shelf" all the way! I signed a songwriters contract wth Motown the day after he died on April 2, 1984, and I wrote a tribute song to him called "When He Sings!" Wonder why there was no mention of Marvin 's support of prize fighter Andy Price, nor his association with Frankie Beverly & Maze?

My fondest memory of Marvin was my freshman year in 1974 of college at NCA&TSU when he gave a concert at the Greensboro coliseum. I spent my last $7 for a ticket and walked from my dorm room to the concert, obtained a front row seat, took pictures when he would glance in my direction, and walked back to campus on clouds. I will never forget that memory!!!
