My mom gave this to me for Christmas when I was ten, with a second hand old grey Gameboy. It was hard times for us, my parents had just divorced and we didn’t have any money. I don’t know how she even got this for me. This game was the best distraction for me and kept me playing for years on end. I’m forever grateful.

I was in a similar boat with the first mario land, we grew up dirt poor and to get a game boy and mario I was blown away by it, and played that thing for 1000s of hours
Its crazy how much there is to this game despite being so short. I like it. It makes it much more replayable.

First mario game I played on a portable handheld. I loved it. Super mario bros 3 was my go to game at that time. So this was a similar looking addition I could take with me. I remember getting 999 coins super excited to get the prize and ended up getting scammed lol

This was such a weird ass Mario game... I remember when this came out and it was so different from the normal Mario tropes... like 1up's being hearts instead of mushrooms, the bells being check points... despite this releasing way after Mario 3 and after Super Mario World on SNES... the changes were odd to say the least.
This game always fellt 'off' for me, even as a kid. The music, I think, was the biggest factor in that regard. The sound design never sounded Mario-like.
An oldie, but a goodie!
To this day, it still baffles me how the game can be so pixelated and relatively simple but the water on the world map is so darn realistic

I never pick up the mushroom right before I go round 3 with Wario unless I’m small because if I’m you pick up the mushroom whilst you have the flower power or bunny ears, you’ll lose them and have a quicker chance of dying when hit
Great longplay, but I wouldn't call this a "walkthrough," as you didn't cover all of the levels, find the secret exits, and play the hidden levels.

This Mario game seems so different.
No invincibility star theme and there are even enemy stars.
the star is not moving at all which is kind of weird for a mario game

There is an invincibility theme, it's just different.
The Gameboy had this and Links Awakening which is a somewhat weird Zelda game. I guess they allowed for more experimentation during development on Gameboy titles or something.

I enjoy this game because you can complete the 6 zones in any order. I never beat the final levels unfortunately.
6:02 I got so mad when I fell from that block it feels like the game tried to make you hit it then fall down
If this was game was on the SNES it would probably be the best 2D Mario game of all time.

I've always been a die hard Sonic fan, but this was one of the few Mario games that I put serious hours into. Wish I could play this game again.
Well guess what, you can (and already could for over 25 years) do exactly that via ROM download websites and emulators which allow Game Boy games to run on your PC, Mac, Android, jailbroken iPhone or even your web browser! As for Windows emulators, I would recommend BGB for original GB and GBC games, and Visual Boy Advance for GBA games.
If you meant to say "Play it with a real Game Boy and the cartridge", well guess what: eBay.

You can even play it for free on an Android device, with John GBAC emulator and downloading the ROM off of Vimm's Lair.

That second level in mario zone does remind me a bit of the game circus charlie from 1984😁,
