Being disabled, I agree! I do think the topic of disabled villains definately deserves more criticism and analysis. Though I'm still ok with "cool" disabled villains, or villains where their disability is the most human part of themselves.
@@NathanGatten I agree! Maybe it's the whole cast out and looked down on by society... but I always loved villains. The coding issue aside, everyone I know that differs from "the norm" (disabled, LGBTQ, etc) really related to and loved villains growing up.
I have also a quite particular question - just in case you watched the Shera remake by Neolle Stevenson on Netflix or if you're planning to do. Lots of people are talking about it and love it for their lesbian characters (which I agree to mostly). But I haven't heard people adressing disability issues in the show as such. It has (mild spoilers for season 3) a disabled villian and I do see ableism in that characters quest. That characters arch does change in season 5, to me into a more positive way. But I still have my doubts if that really changes the ableism. Of course I understand if you don't want to watch or review it. Just in case you'd want, I'd be very interested in your opinion.
It's honestly stupid imo. Why not just idk, make a ride BASED around Princess & The Frog instead of just allow to replace an iconic landmark of Disneyland?
@@Cykelpump33 apparently they tend to make very short rides hen they do make completely new rides, there's also the challenge of finding a place for it and the fact that splash mountain isn't as popular as it once was.
I LOVE having disabled/neurodivergent characters !! I have a RIDICULOUS amounts of autistic headcanons, my favourites being Amy Santiago (B99), and Entrapta (She-Ra). The Entrapta one was actually confirmed !! She-Ra is my favourite show (the 2018 version), partially because I wanna live in that world (without the war and all. After season five she-ra please). It has so much diversity without making a big deal about it (out of all the main characters, only one ISN'T a POC ! and there are no characters that are 'confirmed' as straight, two of the characters in a straight relationship are actually bisexual !! Plus a very, very long list of lesbians). I don't know how I just talked so much about She-Ra on a video that,,, isn't about She-Ra.
I am so on your train of autistic headcanons! I love Amy too :) My favourite autistic headcanon is Kristoff from Frozen! YoSamdySam has a great video on autistic headcanons, if you haven't seen it :) Also, the game Verdant Skies is amazing for having loads of diversity (including an autistic character) without ever explicitly stating labels or making a big song and dance out of it. Just casual, honest representation that doesn't gloss over or make a big deal of disability and everything it brings is such a breath of fresh air.
There are no disabled people because Ryan Murphy and other writers like him at best, don't think about it. At worst they feel that it would detract from the other "more important " messages. They don't relate to disability, so it "does nothing for them." I highly recommend the the documentary cinemability. It actually covers disability in cinema really well.
I kinda get that with cole porter bc they maybe didn’t want his not wanting to sleep with him be about his disability but that he’s a man, but that’s a lazy excuse when you could just say the reason. I wish they would’ve had a disabled main character on this show it would’ve made it much better!!
The Politician had a really awful plot about a teenage girl with a fake chronic illness that her mother tricked her into thinking she had in order to get free stuff from other people, and I think other Ryan Murphy shows have been similarly ableist.
My (23 year old) brother saw me watching this and asked who that disney princess is - ie. Jessica is a disney princess. ALSO Scream queens was brilliant.

And for anyone seeing this who wants media with similar Hollywood vibes, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid is more realistic than Hollywood, but still has gay characters! Definitely check out trigger warnings beforehand though, it handles some heavy topics
There’s a show called 911 and in season 2 they have a child join the cast with Cerebral Palsy. He is then upgraded to series regular for season 3. The character is Christopher Diaz and he’s played by Gavin McHugh. He first appears in 2.02. I think you should react to the season 3 episode 12 “Fools”. I’m curious what you’d think of it.

I really liked the semi-redemption arc of Willson, to be honest. I loved that the show gave us a sort of closure about what happened between Rock and him (especially in ep.3), and I love what that states : that if you've done terrible things, denial isn't the only way for you to cope with what you did, you will never erase the past but you can still build a somewhat better life for yourself. And that's important. Because in our society, an awful lot of us are pushed or at least encouraged to do terrible things (for money, for sex, for power, etc.), and people who did need role models too. This is a show about courage, which is here to give us role models. And I appreciate that they didn't back away from giving people who did terrible things a role model too, because they need some, they need courage, they need to face what they did - for themselves and for society. Also I loved the dialogue between him and Rock at the end : Rock doesn't forgive him, he _says_ what it still does to him, the nightmares and such. And it's hard for Willson but he accepts it. And he's allowed to find a way to do something good that means something to him and that can help a lot of people. It's not about forgiveness, it's about being a better person. I personally feel like we shouldn't alienate every horrible person on the Earth, it does us a disservice, because this way they'll never change.
Technically the first major interracial kiss was in 1939 in Wuthering heights with Laurence Oliver and Merle Oberon (united Artists/Goldwyn film) I say techinically as Merle Hid the fact that she was half Indian and passed as white her whole life and pretened that her Mother who was Indian was her maid - so sad
The Willson part was actually why I stopped watching the show. I knew nothing of the real history but the things he does in the show are horrible and yet he is portrayed in this semi-positive light as if he somehow was the victim of it all and not a perpetrator of sexual abuse? And after he gives this teary speech to Rock he... still continues to force him into sexual activities he isn't comfortable with? I stopped watching after this part so I don't know what happens next but that was really horrible.
At first it bother me too, but I guess the point the series is trying to make is that if at important points in our life we are brave and kind the world would be a better place; so Wilson also had to have a reckoning moment, and the kindness to understand that "hurt people hurt people", and if he had honestly checked himself and change and stop seeing himself as the monster he was told all gay people were, then we should too be kind and also see past his monsterous behavior and into his humanity.
That's really weird, I'm half way through the show and I don't think Wilson is portrayed in a semi-positive light at all. Do people openly chastise him for being an abuser? Well, no, but that happens in real life too (for how long was Weinstein able to do what he wanted without anyone saying a thing?). I think it shows the horrible truth that people can get away with anything if they're powerful enough, which isn't right at all but is true. And that emotional speech he gave about his first love, I felt it was him being open about his past but simultaneously using it to manipulate Roy (whether consciously or not)
I thought that it downplayed the sexual abuse and it seemed like a joke. We wouldn’t portrayal women like that while being pressured to do sexual acts.
As an already partially disabled person in the verge of getting her very first hearing aid, I would love to know more about disability in media. (This wasn't a bid for sympathy by the way, I just needed to type it out for the first time to really accept that I'm getting a hearing aid.)

Oh yes I love to i See something about disability tropes in the media as I often find the way they show people with autism as very derogatory and I often stop watching shows or movies because of it
I’m so glad you brought up Harold Russell’s wonderful portrayal! It had a strong impact on me and helped me to be more understanding and empathetic to people with disabilities and with Veterans, especially Vietnam Vets as I grew up. I find it odd that with Hollywood’s penchant to reboot success that we didn’t see more disabled actors after Harold. Please do educate me more on people with disabilities in movies. Also I’d be interested if there have been screen writers, and directors with disabilities.

I'd love to see more videos on disability in media. I think that Toph Beifong from the Avatar: The Last Airbender series is my favorite disabled character, but as I'm not familiar with the problematic aspects of disabled characters, I don't know if the character could be better or if there are other similar characters who might be better examples.
Yes, I'd especially be interested in disability tropes. I have heard of some problematic ones (quests for overcoming and healing; being "inspiring" for non abled people; those horrible searching suicide narratives) but probably don't know all and don't know enough.
Scream Queens is really underrated, I think the cast were all spectacular especially Billie Lourd and Glen Powell. I would also like to see your perspective on how they portray their LGBT characters.
I feel weird about calling this “revisionist history” maybe that has a different connotation in the US, but no one is trying to pretend this is actually what it was like (what I think of when you say “revisionist history”) rather it’s Reimagined history, or historical fiction (I LOVE historical fiction). To me, revisionist implies trying to deceive or mislead someone, which I don’t feel is going on here.
I mean, I have a lot of straight friends who aren't into golden age Hollywood who did believe that the lgbt social opinions (not the race ones they weren't that stupid) were accurate to the time. I wish I was joking. When most people don't know or care about LGBT history they believe more because they know less. It kinda worried me watching it
I am a brazilian historian and here we use the term "revisionist history" to describe the attempts, usually made by the most conservative social groups, of erasing certain portions of the past so that their version of it is considered the final truth (misleading people, just as you put it). In Brazil, the "revisionist history" excludes LGBTs, alleges that the Nazi regime was left-wing, and that the military dictatorship experienced between 1964-1985, responsible for torturing and killing thousands of people, was actually a "good" government. It's certainly something most historians fight against.

I was so lucky to had a art/theater teacher who lived in the dictatorship times, he talked about the censorship, the art manifests, the people who went "missing" and all the terrible things that happened during that time. I learned more there then at my history class.

Maite Soto Oh I didn’t think this came off as rude. I know a lot of people really like him and I’ll ask the same thing when someone says they don’t like someone I’m a fan of. To answer the question though - you know how you can hear someone say something or you can read something someone has said and it just rubs you the wrong way? I’m not gonna pretend I never liked him during Glee, because I really did at first. It’s just the more I read into him it seemed like he didn’t think about what he says or does a lot of the time. A while back there was a whole sourced thread on tumblr/twitter about the problematic things he’s done/said.

Would definitely love videos about disability representation in media! Something that I found pretty off about Hollywood was that for show where the whole plot was basically getting Camille the role she deserves and how important and ground breaking it is she is centred in the story SO LITTLE!!! Like she is not one of the main people on screen and that is so weird when the entire show is based around her.

Absolutely I would Jessica! I have mild cerebral palsy and if you search Netflix there is 1 I repeat 1 film with a protagonist with CP! The way this particular disability is narrated is that we have to explain our disability all the time, but it goes further bc as a woman people are fascinated with if you can have kids etc. 😐 It would be nice for a character to just be able to mention once or twice about their CP, hell make light of it as often I do and then carry on as normal. Sometimes something as simple as sometimes seeing the character both with and without a walking stick of different days would be accurate.
Honestly, I'm just a big fan of listening to people who know things I don't and/or are living experiences different than mine. Passion is immeasurably interesting. 😊 Bring on your personal passion projects! I've no doubt I'll enjoy those too. 👍🏻

Very much for more discussion of disability in media here! Of all kinds. Though I do have the question of how that would be defined re: mental health. Would it have to be as dramatic as something in A Beautiful Mind or Three Faces of Eve, or would less dramatic, but still life impacting, instances of things like ongoing depression or anxiety be included? It seems like on my side of the pond (U.S.) that it's incredibly difficult to be classified as disabled to start with- let alone for something like severe depression or anxiety, no matter how life impacting it is. I don't know where I'd draw that line, honestly. I almost feel like it would have to be a series of videos. I'm definitely not opposed to that, but that is a lot of heavy topics to research! 🙃

I do agree that the writers if the show missed the mark by not including a person with a disability, particularity as Ryan Murphy cast a character who really was in a wheelchair, Ali Stroker on Glee. (who, by the way, went on to win a Tony Award for her performance of Ado Annie in the revival of the musical “Oklahoma” in 2019). Perhaps someday all movies and television shows will included people with disabilities as members of focus groups to add a bit if realism to the fictional stories. Spoilers or not, seeing this mini series is an interesting and thought provoking look into what an alternative Hollywood ( and society) could have possibly looked like. This video is a fantastic compliment to the mini series. Highlighting and separating historical fact from historical fiction is eye opening. While 'Hollywood' offers glimmers of hope, delving deeper into the real world goings on does illuminate how little progress has been made in television/cinema ... O:) ), since I was born hearing impaired and one of my doctors suspect that I might have EDS and that would explain why my body behaves as it does (right now my diagnosis is Hypermobility Syndrome with chronic pain and a whole list of other things). I have also come to terms with me eventually having to get a wheel chair in the future, thanks to your series about mobility aids. We have a lot in common and you just seems so amazing! I know you love hospital shows and historical stuff, so I would recommend the show Charité on Netflix, which is about a hospital in Berlin in the 1880s when there were a lot of breakthroughs happening in medicine. It's quite an interesting show and there may or may not even be some gay content.
I enjoyed Charite a lot as well :) Especially the follow up series set in WWII. I found the first series a little hard to follow because the three big shot doctors looked so similar it took me most of the series to learn to tell them apart! Like did they all HAVE to have the same hairstyle, beard and glasses when most of the show was shot in such dim lighting? lol
YES! It is one of my absolutely favourite shows, but I do prefer season 2. I've rewatched it a lot and would certainly be interested in the opinion of Jessica, especially considering a non-german perspective on a german production centered around ww2. There are certainly a bunch of differences in how different countries handle those topics
Even though its definitely not an easy show to watch, especially because (in season 2) the horrific crimes on disabled people during the NS Regime are a main topic.
Hi, I'm disabled and I love hearing about other disabled people, especially famous ones! It just makes me feel better to see other people who are similar to me!
Would absolutely love to see more about disability in media - it gets exhausting sometimes, but there have been some benefits. My brother got understood a lot better because he was a lot like Forrest Gump, personality wise (minus the physical ableism trope), so people could relate if he chose to put it that way - he didn't get a lot of representative media, so Tom Hanks with his mild autism coding throughout his filmography gave him a way to relate for a long time.

id be super interested in a video about deaf theatre and musical theatre if thats something you are interested in and have knowledge about! basically the only deaf musicals ive heard of are spring awakening and one production of newsies, but id love to learn more about the history of deaf theatre, etc

It would be amazing to see deconstructions of what and how disability and sexuality are portrayed as in different parts of the world, through their cinema. In English, there's The Fault in Our Stars, Me Before You, The Shape of Water, Forrest Gump, The King's Speech, etc.. some others in other languages include Pithamagan (Tamil film from South India), Aruvi (Tamil Film), The Intouchables (French), De Rouille et d'os (French), etc. Also, as you were explaining the show, Jessica, it almost seemed like there is a queue for different groups of marginalised people/groups in Hollywood and history in general, where each must wait for their turn in the light, like it's some weird orchestration that's happening.
i'd love to see more videos on disability in cinema. breakdowns of things like clairvoyant blind, no/low empathy villains, stuff like darth vader's respirator sounds being there to make him scarier (there's a lot to unpack with just this one character tbh), Very Special Episodes, etc. and then the chance to put the word out about the good portrayals? very good idea i think

Gods bless you Jessica, I love people being excited about things! I love revisionist history more than anything! (I'm writing it so makes sense) and I am the only person in my family who loves Golden Era Hollywood. It's so hard to find people who love Hollywood in my real life.
The best way I could describe this series is that it’s a dream. I loved watching it and as an Filipino woman I loved seeing a Filipino character as the director and giving fictional Anna May Wong an Oscar. But, I know that at the end of the day, it’s only a fictional series and that we STILL have a long way to go. But this series was great at making me think for a second that could happen. Take me to dreamland indeed!
The show having no disabled characters really made me sad. Especially because Ryan Murphy has worked with Tony winner Ali Stroker who is a wheelchair user on glee and he could have just cast her real easy because she’s excellent. This idealized future still looked a lot like our reality where body diversity and disabled people was completely ignored. :(

Being disabled, I agree! I do think the topic of disabled villains definately deserves more criticism and analysis. Though I'm still ok with "cool" disabled villains, or villains where their disability is the most human part of themselves.

@@NathanGatten I agree! Maybe it's the whole cast out and looked down on by society... but I always loved villains. The coding issue aside, everyone I know that differs from "the norm" (disabled, LGBTQ, etc) really related to and loved villains growing up.
I have also a quite particular question - just in case you watched the Shera remake by Neolle Stevenson on Netflix or if you're planning to do. Lots of people are talking about it and love it for their lesbian characters (which I agree to mostly). But I haven't heard people adressing disability issues in the show as such. It has (mild spoilers for season 3) a disabled villian and I do see ableism in that characters quest. That characters arch does change in season 5, to me into a more positive way. But I still have my doubts if that really changes the ableism.
Of course I understand if you don't want to watch or review it. Just in case you'd want, I'd be very interested in your opinion.

It's honestly stupid imo. Why not just idk, make a ride BASED around Princess & The Frog instead of just allow to replace an iconic landmark of Disneyland?

I LOVE having disabled/neurodivergent characters !! I have a RIDICULOUS amounts of autistic headcanons, my favourites being Amy Santiago (B99), and Entrapta (She-Ra). The Entrapta one was actually confirmed !! She-Ra is my favourite show (the 2018 version), partially because I wanna live in that world (without the war and all. After season five she-ra please). It has so much diversity without making a big deal about it (out of all the main characters, only one ISN'T a POC ! and there are no characters that are 'confirmed' as straight, two of the characters in a straight relationship are actually bisexual !! Plus a very, very long list of lesbians). I don't know how I just talked so much about She-Ra on a video that,,, isn't about She-Ra.
I am so on your train of autistic headcanons! I love Amy too :) My favourite autistic headcanon is Kristoff from Frozen! YoSamdySam has a great video on autistic headcanons, if you haven't seen it :) Also, the game Verdant Skies is amazing for having loads of diversity (including an autistic character) without ever explicitly stating labels or making a big song and dance out of it. Just casual, honest representation that doesn't gloss over or make a big deal of disability and everything it brings is such a breath of fresh air.
I was honestly not much of a fan on S5 of She-Ra as it seemed to generic to simply shipping the main character with an obviously evil character.

There are no disabled people because Ryan Murphy and other writers like him at best, don't think about it. At worst they feel that it would detract from the other "more important " messages. They don't relate to disability, so it "does nothing for them."
I highly recommend the the documentary cinemability. It actually covers disability in cinema really well.

The Politician had a really awful plot about a teenage girl with a fake chronic illness that her mother tricked her into thinking she had in order to get free stuff from other people, and I think other Ryan Murphy shows have been similarly ableist.
My (23 year old) brother saw me watching this and asked who that disney princess is - ie. Jessica is a disney princess.

There’s a show called 911 and in season 2 they have a child join the cast with Cerebral Palsy. He is then upgraded to series regular for season 3. The character is Christopher Diaz and he’s played by Gavin McHugh. He first appears in 2.02. I think you should react to the season 3 episode 12 “Fools”. I’m curious what you’d think of it.

I really liked the semi-redemption arc of Willson, to be honest. I loved that the show gave us a sort of closure about what happened between Rock and him (especially in ep.3), and I love what that states : that if you've done terrible things, denial isn't the only way for you to cope with what you did, you will never erase the past but you can still build a somewhat better life for yourself. And that's important. Because in our society, an awful lot of us are pushed or at least encouraged to do terrible things (for money, for sex, for power, etc.), and people who did need role models too. This is a show about courage, which is here to give us role models. And I appreciate that they didn't back away from giving people who did terrible things a role model too, because they need some, they need courage, they need to face what they did - for themselves and for society.
Also I loved the dialogue between him and Rock at the end : Rock doesn't forgive him, he _says_ what it still does to him, the nightmares and such. And it's hard for Willson but he accepts it. And he's allowed to find a way to do something good that means something to him and that can help a lot of people. It's not about forgiveness, it's about being a better person. I personally feel like we shouldn't alienate every horrible person on the Earth, it does us a disservice, because this way they'll never change.
Technically the first major interracial kiss was in 1939 in Wuthering heights with Laurence Oliver and Merle Oberon (united Artists/Goldwyn film) I say techinically as Merle Hid the fact that she was half Indian and passed as white her whole life and pretened that her Mother who was Indian was her maid - so sad
The Willson part was actually why I stopped watching the show. I knew nothing of the real history but the things he does in the show are horrible and yet he is portrayed in this semi-positive light as if he somehow was the victim of it all and not a perpetrator of sexual abuse? And after he gives this teary speech to Rock he... still continues to force him into sexual activities he isn't comfortable with? I stopped watching after this part so I don't know what happens next but that was really horrible.
I hated ever second of his character arc
At first it bother me too, but I guess the point the series is trying to make is that if at important points in our life we are brave and kind the world would be a better place; so Wilson also had to have a reckoning moment, and the kindness to understand that "hurt people hurt people", and if he had honestly checked himself and change and stop seeing himself as the monster he was told all gay people were, then we should too be kind and also see past his monsterous behavior and into his humanity.
That's really weird, I'm half way through the show and I don't think Wilson is portrayed in a semi-positive light at all. Do people openly chastise him for being an abuser? Well, no, but that happens in real life too (for how long was Weinstein able to do what he wanted without anyone saying a thing?). I think it shows the horrible truth that people can get away with anything if they're powerful enough, which isn't right at all but is true. And that emotional speech he gave about his first love, I felt it was him being open about his past but simultaneously using it to manipulate Roy (whether consciously or not)
I thought that it downplayed the sexual abuse and it seemed like a joke. We wouldn’t portrayal women like that while being pressured to do sexual acts.
As an already partially disabled person in the verge of getting her very first hearing aid, I would love to know more about disability in media. (This wasn't a bid for sympathy by the way, I just needed to type it out for the first time to really accept that I'm getting a hearing aid.)

I’m so glad you brought up Harold Russell’s wonderful portrayal! It had a strong impact on me and helped me to be more understanding and empathetic to people with disabilities and with Veterans, especially Vietnam Vets as I grew up. I find it odd that with Hollywood’s penchant to reboot success that we didn’t see more disabled actors after Harold. Please do educate me more on people with disabilities in movies. Also I’d be interested if there have been screen writers, and directors with disabilities.

I think that Toph Beifong from the Avatar: The Last Airbender series is my favorite disabled character, but as I'm not familiar with the problematic aspects of disabled characters, I don't know if the character could be better or if there are other similar characters who might be better examples.
Yes, I'd especially be interested in disability tropes. I have heard of some problematic ones (quests for overcoming and healing; being "inspiring" for non abled people; those horrible searching suicide narratives) but probably don't know all and don't know enough.

Scream Queens is really underrated, I think the cast were all spectacular especially Billie Lourd and Glen Powell. I would also like to see your perspective on how they portray their LGBT characters.
I feel weird about calling this “revisionist history” maybe that has a different connotation in the US, but no one is trying to pretend this is actually what it was like (what I think of when you say “revisionist history”) rather it’s Reimagined history, or historical fiction (I LOVE historical fiction). To me, revisionist implies trying to deceive or mislead someone, which I don’t feel is going on here.
I mean, I have a lot of straight friends who aren't into golden age Hollywood who did believe that the lgbt social opinions (not the race ones they weren't that stupid) were accurate to the time. I wish I was joking. When most people don't know or care about LGBT history they believe more because they know less. It kinda worried me watching it
I am a brazilian historian and here we use the term "revisionist history" to describe the attempts, usually made by the most conservative social groups, of erasing certain portions of the past so that their version of it is considered the final truth (misleading people, just as you put it). In Brazil, the "revisionist history" excludes LGBTs, alleges that the Nazi regime was left-wing, and that the military dictatorship experienced between 1964-1985, responsible for torturing and killing thousands of people, was actually a "good" government. It's certainly something most historians fight against.

I was so lucky to had a art/theater teacher who lived in the dictatorship times, he talked about the censorship, the art manifests, the people who went "missing" and all the terrible things that happened during that time. I learned more there then at my history class.

To answer the question though - you know how you can hear someone say something or you can read something someone has said and it just rubs you the wrong way? I’m not gonna pretend I never liked him during Glee, because I really did at first. It’s just the more I read into him it seemed like he didn’t think about what he says or does a lot of the time. A while back there was a whole sourced thread on tumblr/twitter about the problematic things he’s done/said.

Would definitely love videos about disability representation in media! Something that I found pretty off about Hollywood was that for show where the whole plot was basically getting Camille the role she deserves and how important and ground breaking it is she is centred in the story SO LITTLE!!! Like she is not one of the main people on screen and that is so weird when the entire show is based around her.

Absolutely I would Jessica! I have mild cerebral palsy and if you search Netflix there is 1 I repeat 1 film with a protagonist with CP!
The way this particular disability is narrated is that we have to explain our disability all the time, but it goes further bc as a woman people are fascinated with if you can have kids etc. 😐
It would be nice for a character to just be able to mention once or twice about their CP, hell make light of it as often I do and then carry on as normal. Sometimes something as simple as sometimes seeing the character both with and without a walking stick of different days would be accurate.
Honestly, I'm just a big fan of listening to people who know things I don't and/or are living experiences different than mine.

Very much for more discussion of disability in media here! Of all kinds. Though I do have the question of how that would be defined re: mental health. Would it have to be as dramatic as something in A Beautiful Mind or Three Faces of Eve, or would less dramatic, but still life impacting, instances of things like ongoing depression or anxiety be included?
It seems like on my side of the pond (U.S.) that it's incredibly difficult to be classified as disabled to start with- let alone for something like severe depression or anxiety, no matter how life impacting it is.
I don't know where I'd draw that line, honestly. I almost feel like it would have to be a series of videos. I'm definitely not opposed to that, but that is a lot of heavy topics to research! 🙃

I do agree that the writers if the show missed the mark by not including a person with a disability, particularity as Ryan Murphy cast a character who really was in a wheelchair, Ali Stroker on Glee. (who, by the way, went on to win a Tony Award for her performance of Ado Annie in the revival of the musical “Oklahoma” in 2019). Perhaps someday all movies and television shows will included people with disabilities as members of focus groups to add a bit if realism to the fictional stories. Omg, thank you, Jessica! The Henry Wilson redemption bit made me FURIOUS! I hated that character and thought he deserved an ending much like Harvey Weinstein. It really soured the end of the show for me.
Spoilers or not, seeing this mini series is an interesting and thought provoking look into what an alternative Hollywood ( and society) could have possibly looked like. This video is a fantastic compliment to the mini series. Highlighting and separating historical fact from historical fiction is eye opening. While 'Hollywood' offers glimmers of hope, delving deeper into the real world goings on does illuminate how little progress has been made in television/cinema ...

I know you love hospital shows and historical stuff, so I would recommend the show Charité on Netflix, which is about a hospital in Berlin in the 1880s when there were a lot of breakthroughs happening in medicine. It's quite an interesting show and there may or may not even be some gay content.
I enjoyed Charite a lot as well :) Especially the follow up series set in WWII. I found the first series a little hard to follow because the three big shot doctors looked so similar it took me most of the series to learn to tell them apart! Like did they all HAVE to have the same hairstyle, beard and glasses when most of the show was shot in such dim lighting? lol
YES! It is one of my absolutely favourite shows, but I do prefer season 2. I've rewatched it a lot and would certainly be interested in the opinion of Jessica, especially considering a non-german perspective on a german production centered around ww2. There are certainly a bunch of differences in how different countries handle those topics
Even though its definitely not an easy show to watch, especially because (in season 2) the horrific crimes on disabled people during the NS Regime are a main topic.
Hi, I'm disabled and I love hearing about other disabled people, especially famous ones! It just makes me feel better to see other people who are similar to me!
Would absolutely love to see more about disability in media - it gets exhausting sometimes, but there have been some benefits. My brother got understood a lot better because he was a lot like Forrest Gump, personality wise (minus the physical ableism trope), so people could relate if he chose to put it that way - he didn't get a lot of representative media, so Tom Hanks with his mild autism coding throughout his filmography gave him a way to relate for a long time.

It would be amazing to see deconstructions of what and how disability and sexuality are portrayed as in different parts of the world, through their cinema. In English, there's The Fault in Our Stars, Me Before You, The Shape of Water, Forrest Gump, The King's Speech, etc.. some others in other languages include Pithamagan (Tamil film from South India), Aruvi (Tamil Film), The Intouchables (French), De Rouille et d'os (French), etc.
Also, as you were explaining the show, Jessica, it almost seemed like there is a queue for different groups of marginalised people/groups in Hollywood and history in general, where each must wait for their turn in the light, like it's some weird orchestration that's happening.

i'd love to see more videos on disability in cinema. breakdowns of things like clairvoyant blind, no/low empathy villains, stuff like darth vader's respirator sounds being there to make him scarier (there's a lot to unpack with just this one character tbh), Very Special Episodes, etc. and then the chance to put the word out about the good portrayals? very good idea i think
I would love for you to make a video about disability in media! something i noticed is that especially facial scars/disfigurements are always associated with villians and “being evil“
Just finished watching Hollywood after hearing about it from this video. Its amazing and I want more of it, I hope they do another series... maybe an anthology series like AHS?

Gods bless you Jessica, I love people being excited about things! I love revisionist history more than anything! (I'm writing it so makes sense) and I am the only person in my family who loves Golden Era Hollywood. It's so hard to find people who love Hollywood in my real life.
My terrible memory problems mean I can forget any and all spoilers, often not even remembering I heard/saw them in the first place. 😂
The best way I could describe this series is that it’s a dream. I loved watching it and as an Filipino woman I loved seeing a Filipino character as the director and giving fictional Anna May Wong an Oscar. But, I know that at the end of the day, it’s only a fictional series and that we STILL have a long way to go. But this series was great at making me think for a second that could happen. Take me to dreamland indeed!
The show having no disabled characters really made me sad. Especially because Ryan Murphy has worked with Tony winner Ali Stroker who is a wheelchair user on glee and he could have just cast her real easy because she’s excellent. This idealized future still looked a lot like our reality where body diversity and disabled people was completely ignored. :(
I loved Scream Queens and had no idea it was the same director as Glee and AHS. I am off to watch this right now!

While I have no interest in this era or Hollywood I ❤️❤️❤️ all of your historical lessons/commentary and was thoroughly pleased (like always) with this video and feel all the wiser for watching 😊
