    Very bizarre to me that people of that generation were okay with slavery, racism, husbands beating their wives, marital rape, the list goes on and on, but not okay with films depicting alcohol/drugs, women in positions of power or *gasp* homosexuals😱 the morals of some are extremely skewed

    • @JoliNatural
      @JoliNatural Před rokem

      Nowadays it's almost the opposite in that society is largely shunning slavery, racism, DV, marital rape etc. yet sexism (objectifying females) in movies/media is now at an all time high.

    Hays Code may try to makes Hollywood industry more moral but there is one pretty controversional rules that causes racial segregation in cinema industry due to the anti-miscegenation rules that inserted in the codes which prohibit actors or actresses from different race to having contacts or having their role together in one film

      I totally agree with this. Violence of every type is normalised these days and that’s terrifying. We’re all becoming totally desensitised to it - god help the younger generation and the next one to come.
      There’s no reason for gratuitous violence when insinuating is such a powerful human function. That way people can visualise an act of violence on a level that they can subconsciously tolerate and live with.
      I won’t even get stared about gratuitous violence against females…….

    • @JoliNatural
      @JoliNatural Před rokem +1

      It's always been a curious debate: should people be shown the full truth of human behavior (good and bad), will bad behavior be gloried/become the norm/acted upon if shown in media, will it shape or harm those who view it??? I am concerned with the amount of sexualised violence particularly against females and how that is shaping societies views on violent sexual treatment of females (and sadly children).

    The Hays Code played a huge part in making the Golden Age of Hollywood precisely that; the golden age. The end of the Code signaled the end of that age and resulted in a rapid, noticeable drop in aesthetic quality, class, and professionalism. To the postmodern mind, it's hard to imagine a different world from the one we have now even though relatively recently, ordinary people actually believed in things like honor or the sanctity of marriage. From an artistic standpoint, it is far easier to make a movie that caters to the lowest common denominator as opposed to using something like double entendres. These movies often had more sexual tension than the new ones with their explicit sex scenes, for example.

  • @JoliNatural
    @JoliNatural Před rokem +2

    We've gone in the opposite direction now, which can be a good thing in positive portrayals of same sex relationships (Tales of the City is one such fabulous series) and interracial relationships etc., while also potentially being unhealthy in how gratuitous scenes can be - high impact gore, strong sexual violence, sexualised violence. I do wonder if there is a point in which we might say it's too much?

  • @SurferJoe1

    As a devout film buff, I offer some further illustrations of your points, worth checking out: (1) For carefully obscure subtext, watch the triangle of the three leads in the classic noir "Gilda" (1946); (2) for a rare sympathetic gay man, watch Richard Basehart in the excellent 1947 (I think) "Repeat Perfomance", always shown on TCM around the New Year- but of course, he ends in an asylum! (3) I read a claim once, impossible to verify, that Robert Redford's (mostly) gay character in "Inside Daisy Clover" (1965) is the first overtly out character in a mainstream film to not end with suicide or tragedy. (I vote for Bugs Bunny). "Tea and Sympathy" (1956) is an earlier mainstream film that tap-dances on eggshells with the subject front and center. And of course you covered "Rope"; the case and characters are drawn from real-life Leopold and Loeb (did you get my note? 100th anniversary coming up!). Richard Fleischer's "Compulsion" (1958 or so) was a much more factual (but still fictionalized) look at the same event, with the relationship on the table.

    This video is incredible! Thank you for talking about this! The effects of this are definitely still evident here and all of the transphobia in film even now! For instance- the whole plot being hinged on a man in “women’s” clothing or that a beautiful woman is actually trans and “gay panic” allows the “bamboozled” man to kill them or seek revenge in some way.

      @@georgiamarie_ the ‘gay panic defence’ could drive me to murder, honestly. And all the sky jokes about accidentally kissing a trans person is so infuriating.
      I know everyone says this but I can’t help say it to - why does it matter to anyone about other peoples’ sexuality?! If you don’t like it or don’t agree with it then fine. That’s your opinion. It doesn’t, however, give you the right to try to forcefully ‘correct’ people to be like you. Why can’t we as a society not just live and let live? 😢 Christianity (and pretty much every religion) has a lot to answer for and a lot of blood on their hands.

    • @haileybalmer9722
      @haileybalmer9722 Před rokem

      Even when the story is more sympathetic to the cross dressing* character, the movie still tends to be extremely transphobic. I saw Mrs. Doubtfire about fifty times when I was a kid, and I went back and rewatched it a few years ago. Yikes. Just… yikes. It does not hold up.
      *I decided on that word because Hollywood seems really confused about Trans people and seems to lump anyone who dresses outside of gender norms into this category. Mrs. Doubtfire isn’t trans, for instance, but that character comes bundled with all your standard outdated transphobic tropes.

    I think it's important that you mention it wasn't, directly, the U.S. government. This kind of thing was insidious and everywhere but in the U.S. you didn't have a BBC equivalent - you had private broadcasters and studios following a glorified honor pledge. It no doubt had varying weight and influence but it wasn't 'law.' That's thanks to the U.S. having negative rights in its constitution. It doesn't say you have the right to free speech and religion, though it's often described that way - the constitution says you naturally have those rights by being alive. Instead the constitution says that GOVERNMENT cannot abridge those rights since its only governments that have the ability to infringe upon those "self-evident" freedoms.

    As a former Disney artist, I feel compelled to speak up for some old friends by pointing out that the company has had a very high gay representation in recent decades, especially in the creative areas, and many of the characters cited were animated by gay men, and all of them passed through the hands of gay artists at the design and storyboard stage, etc. Some of the 'gay' traits in the characters, at least by my observation, are more bits of self-expression than commentary. That goes for characters like Timon in "The Lion King" as well. Though Ursula is certainly a villain, the inspiration from Divine- advisably or not- was meant to make her more appealing. Things are moving so fast nowadays- happily- that it can be hard to see through the lens of thirty years ago.

    Portraying homosexual characters as villains is such a common thing, but it is something I never noticed until I grew up. This has left me with conflicted feelings about some of my favorite golden era movies. For example, "Laura" (1944) has the awesome Clifton Webb portraying Waldo Lydecker. I love the movie and the character of Lydecker, but it is clear that he is meant to be the antithesis to the upright detective played by Dana Andrews. Andrews' Detective McPherson is the 'hero' who saves the day. Regardless, my love for Clifton Webb and his portrayal of Waldo Lydecker remains. I am just conscious about the context now.

    I used to watch Chicago fire and one of the main group of characters was a lesbiab. I just wanted to see her happy but she got with a woman who robbed her of everything abd they killed her off. It made me so mad. This was around 10 years ago.

    Hello gorgeous! I still adore your hair!! I wondered if i might ask you a question? If you are comfortable answering.. i do not have anyone in my immediate life who are lgbtq to ask. What words do you find offensive in regards to lgbtq? Theres obviously words like f****t, that are aweful and i woukd never use anyway, but i very much want to be sure im never disrespectful in terms i use. I woukd have thought queer was rude because it also means strange/abnormal and thats not flattering.. wich is why i realised how much i dont know.

      It definitely depends on the person. It's always easiest to ask the person what label they use. Personally, I'm comfortable with using, and being called, queer, gay, lesbian, etc. However some people prefer the term queer as it's more all-encompassing, and some people don't like it because of its history. LGBT people will refer to themselves using slurs like f*g, dyke, etc. I've been known to call myself a dyke and don't have a problem with my friends saying that, but obviously you can tell if someone is using it in a derogatory way. As long as you don't use terms that are known to be slurs, and ask people what label they use or are comfortable with, you should be good :)

    I wish they still had the no nudity rule. Practically every film and has female nudity or something sexual like a guy goes into a bar and there's pole dancers. Etc 🙄. Makes me really uncomfortable and self conscious when watching this stuff. If you want to watch nudity and sex, watch p*rn. It can just be implied in movies. Especially as it's always women with their boobs out and very rarely ever men undressing. It's so unnecessary. Everything else you've mentioned I agree with you that it's stupid or unfair.

As a Non binary trans person watching you come out and seeing how much love you have for all members of our community is beautiful. You showing our history and being non apologetic for it makes me adore you even more. Thank you for all that you do and for being such a strong positive voice. I truly wish the world had more people like you in it.

      I'ma just say this as nicely as I can Hays code is not a part of your history you guys keep saying that like the Hays code was specifically targeting gay people in gay people only when the Hays code had many rules that targeted many people it is a part of Hollywood history it is a part of American history it is not specifically apart of queer history

    My husband and I are Gen X and we have a 17 year old daughter who is bi and very interested in LGBTQ+ issues. We recently sat down and watched Deathtrap, which came out in 1980 and was one of the first movies we remember that had a gay kiss between Christopher Reed and Michael Caine. It was a favorite of ours because it's a clever and well written movie but it definitely (spoilers) has the gay villain trope and my husband revealed that his father had been anxious about him liking it at the time because he was worried my husband liked it for the gay content. I still think it's a really good movie and at the time it was groundbreaking but in 2022 it demonstrates what you're talking about here as well as utterly failing the Bechtel test.

    Howdy Georgia! I loooove this episode so much. I have a couple of points that I thought might be interesting:
    * In this era of America, “sexual slavery” was about forced prostitution and human trafficking, with less focus on the race of victims or perpetrators. If I’m not mistaken, the FBI regularly pulled in mobsters of this era for this very thing because it stuck more time on a person and was much easier to prove than prohibition. Later, they relied on tax evasion.
    * The Hitchcock movie Rope was based on the true crime duo Leopold and Loeb who were indeed gay, at least one of them was. The other was more so for trade. In that era the fact of the matter was very low key reported and wasn’t confirmed till much later as the details of their union were quite salacious and deeply based in psychopathologies we only started speaking loudly about in the past 30 years or so. Not due to their homosexuality, but their narcissism. They were arguably the first real case of what we call now “affluenza.”
    * I also feel the need to thank you for not holding Marlene Dietrich as a feminist icon because of her openness and free spirit. Every time someone says she was a feminist, I’m positive she turns in her grave. She specifically stated in interviews that she DETESTED feminists. She most def doesn’t give much room for question.
    * ALL of this is based on being a nation heavily based on puritanical views pushed on everyday life. Sadly, it’s still happening today 😢
    * Side note: you ever notice how in pre-code movies the women of cheating men that cheated in retaliation and/ or divorce due to HIS cheating was responsible for breaking up the marriage?? 😂 Oh America.
    I love your channel! Please keep ‘em coming 😊

    This is not a dark part of queer history is a dark part of entertainment history the Hays code did not Target gay people in specific it targeted anything that was considered sexually perverted one of the main rules of the Hays code was no interracial relationships another rule was do not portray white people as slaves there were lots of rules to the code and it did not specifically Target gays so to say that this is specifically a part of queer history is wrong

    With the whole culture wars battle in politics and the “anti-woke” movement happening with the far right wingers, I do worry that it may lead to bringing back the Hay’s Code into law again! If that happens again, it would be a huge attack against free speech and expression!

    Things are starting to get a little better. On the show The Boys (SPOILERS FOR THE BOYS SEASON 3) there’s a character who isn’t in the comics much who they expanded on a lot. They made her bisexual on the show, which honestly leads to this great storyline where their company tells everyone she’s a proud lesbian and tries to fit her and her partner into this horrid little Ellen-and-Portia box. It’s this huge marketing campaign that she gets zero say in. Anyway, they get to the part where she dies in the comics, and the writers very obviously said “wait, are we doing a bury the gays? We are. We have to rewrite this.” And they did that in the sloppiest possible way. I’m glad she didn’t get killed off, but I wish they’d thought of something better than plot armor to save her.

      Im sorry, perhaps i should be more frank.
      Ive been subscribed for some time, and i admit i subscribed not only because i love true crime, but also because i do have a subtle attraction to you.
      Its juvenile, and its animal, but i honestly never gave your sexuality a second glance.
      I honestly was shocked and a little hurt to learn you identified as queer.
      Dont get me wrong, i understand and support anyone, for being happy, and being themselves, but i did furrow my brow when i heard it.
      Maybe i wasnt paying close attention before. Maybe i didnt want to hear it.
      But, im not going to lie, and i will admit why im here, and why i probably initially subscribed.
      Its because i do find you attractive.
      From your accent, to your eyes, and your lips and hair, and of course your personality.
      You are a very attractive woman.
      I wish you all the best, and happiness.
      Its slightly disappointing to know, as a man, i might not have a chance...
      But i can laugh that off, for my naivate, and still enjoy what you do, and support you for the fantastic work that you do.
      Ill be happy to support you always.
      But seriously, you are beautiful. And you should know it. Id buy you lunch and laugh about this anytime if i could.
