Learn UNSHUFFLED, the trick that Paul did on Penn & Teller: paulgertnermagic.com/unshuffled/
Penn says "We know this trick and You Blew Our Mind." Normally Penn & Teller take a guess at how the trick is done. After asking to examine the cards they did not even bother to take a guess. They simply said "Paul Gertner You Fooled Us!"
Paul Gertner is a Trade Show and Corporate Magician who specializes in fooling the world's most analytics audiences from Scientists to Engineers... and YES he even Fooled Penn & Teller. gertner.com Paul has 30+ years of experience performing at trade shows and presenting keynotes for more than 1,000 clients in 35 different counties. Paul Gertner has been awarded Close-Up Magician of the Year twice from the Magic Castle in Hollywood, and he has won The Siegfried & Roy Gold Lion Award, as well as the First Prize at FISM, considered the Olympics of Magic. He has also appeared on the NBC's Tonight Show, in the Wall Street Journal and in more than 35 countries.

How someone becomes this good at manipulating cards that well is so insanely impressive.
Evidence of a mis-spent youth.
I think I worked out how he did it. In his left pocket he clearly has a marker, and in his jacket there are multiple decks. Now, he also has a watch that can stop time, so every time he wants to change the words, he pauses time, writes on the cards and then does the trick. It's pretty obvious really.
I'm just being silly. This trick is absolutely magnificent. You are a wizard!
omg you're so right how could penn and teller not have thought of this
Dan C Brilliant 😂
Dan C man I thought you were into something. And than you fooled me🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
DIO took on a magician job? i expected more
I love how the trophy say F U on it. Penn and Teller's middle finger of respect.
Jeff The Theorist it means Fooled Us
no way does it? i thought it ment fuck you.
Timothy C. Gratta So you really think that the size difference between F and U and all the other letters, is just a coinsidence??
Panos Economou I definitely think it's intentional. I know it's an anagram for "Fooled Us" but I think the size difference between the characters is too big to be anything else.
thats great
Who else loves that when you fool Penn & Teller they give you a trophy thats has F U in big bold letters on it
that was by default ;) Pen answered a question about it in an interview on google talks.
lol I think I heard Penn said it was not unintentional, or it wasn't a coincidence, or something like that
This guy's faro shuffles are ON. POINT. Brilliant.
I've always wanted to see a magician Ask "Would you like to join me for this trick?" and hear the recipient say "No, I would not".
that happens all the time... you just move onto a different spectator.
One of my favorite things about this routine is that you didn't just fool everyone once, but you did it multiple times and it got better each time. Truly beautiful work. One of my favorite "foolers" on Penn & Teller by far. Great job!
You have picked up my favorite part of the trick... the layered sequences that keep getting stronger each time. As you said it creates multiple endings... each one unexpected and each one building on the other. Glad you enjoyed Unshuffled.
if you freeze at 1:11....i noticed the cards starting from left side and if look at cards starting from right side....they go in same order in a mirror form like for example 9 8 7 6 5 5 6 7 8 9, and opposite in color, which help in creating the illusion it is shuffled...this is very interesting and fascinating trick...You sir is amazing.
Glad you like it.
You wanna know what is really magical here, that you have so many replies and you answered so many of them, nice test of character. You stay in touch with the community that enjoys you. You take your valuable time interacting with your fans on CZcams. Nice way to show you are humble and down eath. Your trick was very impressive, but your six pillars of characters, much more impressive! Keep being you Arthur, thank you!
Thanks for the nice comments. I learn a lot just hearing what people think. One guy gave me a suggestion for this trick on a very subtle touch (he was not a magician) but his suggestion was brilliant. The crazy thing was that over 40 years of doing the trick and teaching it to many magicians... none of us had ever thought of his idea. It's good to listen to other people... you can learn from them.
Well, when he ruffled the cards and told her to stop, the card you saw was not the King of Spades until he split the deck. But that's obviously not the tough part.
This is a YES from me!
Thank you Simon.
Simon Cowell lol
Love how the only "I know how he did it!" is the basic forced selection of the K of spades.
DUH!
The rest of the trick must have taken years of practice..
Ridiculous amount of skill.
Probably the best card trick i've ever seen,
and I don't think it required and extra deck or slight of hand.
The world's largest gathering of professional magicians in these comments
which actually have no idea about it
This is one of those tricks that is so damn good, I don't want to know how Paul did it. I'm happy just watching, with my mouth open in disbelief.
The way magic should be!
I respectfully disagree. Knowing how a trick is done adds another level of appreciation when it's well executed.
I wonder if this man has a background in mathematics... There is definitely a pattern to the deck when he first spreads them out. And I was _kind of_ with it when he was showing 3 different versions of the word "unshuffled," as that could be explained by arranging the cards in specific ratios as they relate to the original sequence. (As the area of each letter would increase by a ratio of 2:1.) But when he started forming other words... I think the man literally blew my mind. And even if the cards simply had to be rearranged in specific ratios it would be incredibly hard to do so and make it look like a very convincing shuffle. (As he did.) And it didn't seem like a single card was shuffled out of place. This guy is amazing. O.o
Mysteryskatin same dude. At first I was like, alright, I see what you're doing. Then I'm just like, dude. What the hell?
Every single other "Penn & Teller: Fool Us" video has some sort of explanation under it in the comments section. Every single one. And that is probably what amazes me about this trick the most. No one can explain it. That's how you can tell this is one extremely talented Magician. Amazing trick. Absolutely amazing.
BOGO Gaming I actually could explain it and I actually performed this trick one because I bought his book where he explains the trick. I won't spoil it in the comments however because that would be unfair to him. If you want to know the trick, buy the book. The only part that really nobody can explain is the "Penn&Teller" part. That is simply stunning!
well done Paul - absolutely awesome!
Thanks Nick.
Whenever a magician hand over their props for inspection it means that it's clean... the reason for teller's expression. 7:36
He could've had 10 different decks in his pocket...
Allison is like 'wtf is this witchcraft..'
Alyson*
i need this guy to work some magic on my bank account..lol
She says stop for the card, but he really picked out the card he wanted
Mark Isaacson that isn't the trick that Penn and teller were fooled by.. That's the easy part.
that's obvious. it was only the ending that fooled penn and teller. they even said that
I see a lot of comments that are close, but I don't see any that are quite right.
The trick isn't getting four copies of the word to merge into two or one copy of the word UNSHUFFLED. A perfect "unshuffle" will do that. That takes a lot of practice, but it's not difficult to understand. The trick *also* isn't in getting the right card, because it's pretty obvious he gives her the card he wants, not quite the card she picks. And finally, the trick isn't getting it to say KING OF SPADES, because that's just the other side of the cards.
The trick is how he gets what appears to be the same deck of cards to say THREE different things along the long side of the cards. He knows this is the trick, and he tells Penn & Teller this is the trick, if you watch his face when their names appear.
I don't see a deck swap, although I can't guarantee there isn't one. He also doesn't rotate half the deck, as far as I can tell. I can't figure out how to get their names from either of the phrases above, but I'll grant that it may be possible.Only other thing I could think of is that one side of the deck actually says two things, but half the deck is actually set back a little bit.
That's weird, i don´t see any "Magic Experts" trying to explain the trick
Satan. He made a blood pact with Satan.
They aren't good at maths
My thoughts while watching this:
Damn that force was obvious
Okay cool so he’s just perfected his shuffling
Okay wow it’s like insanely perfect
How in the hell did he do all of this flawlessly
audience guys face "the fuck did i just watch?"
Can we just take a moment and realize the genius of Penn & Teller with the F U trophy !
too good :D
I have never seen anybody so gracious about comments under their CZcams video. Your interaction with your fans here makes me like you that much more.
Robert, it's fun to gain insight into the thought process of other people. Some have even suggested solutions or ideas that I never thought of and that could actually become part of a new trick. You never know where a new idea can come from.
I love how when someone fools them they literally give the contestants a big “F U” so to speak
Brilliantl
Weird as it is to say, I personally actually really appreciated that you were (what I interpreted as, at least) somewhat visibly nervous during this performance. It shows that even though you're clearly a master magician, with a published book that Penn and Teller bought and studied (and didn't even master themselves), you never lost the excitement of the trick, or your human side, and it makes you really relatable. Thanks for a great show.
I actually address that issue in my Blog Post Part Three: gertner.com/whats-trick-fooling-penn-teller-part-three/ I'm fortunate that I've only had it happen twice in a 40 year career... one on Johnny Carson... doing that trick... and on Penn & Teller with the same trick. Thanks for the very nice comment.
Teller looked sooooooo in awe when he get to see the deck up close :D
Magicians loves cards
RagnarisFellhanded the look of wonder totally made this whole video for me.
Even if we collectively over time figure out all steps of this trick, it is still a very different thing to understand or to repeat. The skill required to pull this off in such a clean way is just unreal!
Even if I know how the technique works, I'm still baffled by the execution, and you blew my mind!
Wow! Just discovered Penn and Teller Fool Us here in the UK. Paul Gertner that might be one of the best card tricks I’ve ever seen. Wow!!! Genius sir!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
There was also a UK series of this show in 2011.
Seasons One/Two are kicking around online with Jonathan Ross if you haven't seen them. I agree, this was incredible
Even the parts that I did understand require flawless execution for every single shuffle. Gosh dang, man. That was so good.
Glad you enjoyed it.
honestly, i know that the messages are pre-defined.
The way he switches messages and shuffles the card to match patterns blows me away.
The King of Spades is surely forced, but the rest... huge respect
Paul, I saw you do this trick many years ago at a Pediatric convention where you were hired by the company I worked for. You were promoting Motrin and that trick has always stuck in my mind. And I remember how very nice you were too. I am so glad you are still doing magic and congrats for fooling Penn and Teller.
thats nothing ;;;;;;;you can do it with your pictures cut in 20 lines the picture you get40 pieces if you take the 1 st and 3 th and 5th ( 7.9.11.13.15.17.190 like that till end and 2nd and 4 th ( 6.8.10.12.14.16.18.20 0till end you if you attach each separated groupe
in the order BUT LITTLE BIT BIG PIXEL WILL APEAR you can get 2 pictures of you and of cource with alphabets you cant notice THE PIXELS cause the laphabet will be just little shorter HHHHHHH kids game thats nothing with magic THAT SHOULD NOT FOLLED ANY ONE
i think this trick has been done with only 1 pack of card and hes just a beast with it
that is true... just one pack.
5:06 Penn must be thinking "I NEED to learn that!" 😂😂
Complete package - the technique, the acting, the attitude. What a wonderful magician, I could watch you all day Paul. A master of his craft indeed.
You are very kind... Keep eye on Fool Us this summer... I have a new surprise you will enjoy.
Can't wait to see the surprise
Paul Gertner is Super Grandmaster Carder
Such a nice man. Great trick.
thanks Glad you liked Unshuffled
Skill level: Legendary.
I've been doing magic for about 9 years and unshuffled is one of my first classic trick that i've learned. I was blown away by it for years. And seeing this video really blew my mind again like the first time seeing this trick. I've watched it over and over and still not able to figure out. VERY WELL DONE SIR!
Ignatius Gregory nh
Glad the new version surprised you. Thanks for the nice compliments.
1:26 he didn't take the card where she said stop, he just took the card at the break.
awesome performance
The king of spades was never in the deck.. slide of hand
Oh no I got distracted
Wow, nice catch!
You never pick a card from a magician, he gives you a card.
Now that's one seasoned professional
That is the best card trick I have ever seen in my 36 years of living on planet earth. Hats off to this magician
SO TRUE
these are one of those magic tricks that i never want to know how is done so i can be amazed forever
I'm with you... I still love the feeling of being fooled.
Watched this several times, and I just love Teller's face at the end. He always looks so happy and excited when he DOESN'T (or at least when his guess is wrong) know how a trick is done. I love that about him. Brilliant trick.
I can't get over the fact that the trophy is just FU
They probably made it like that on purpose cause penn usually gets mad when he's fooled.
Baron11704 FOOL US, I think.
7:33 I would love to know just what made Teller's jaw drop there. Never mind the trick itself, just the fact that he is that amazed. That says a lot.
I guess they had a theory about how Paul could have fooled them but it required him having a fake deck or some kind of gimmick. The fact that he allowed them to check the deck blew their theory out of the water, or at least rendered it improbable...kind of a vague answer. Yes would love to know what crossed his mind
Ii think they were checking if he marked both sides so he could have more combinations of words. I think that was the twist that it said Penn and Teller at the end. I'm guessing you can only spell out so many words with each set of marked cards and since he changed it to Penn and Teller that extra bit was the bit they were focusing on
I don't know. When he pulled the deck of cards out and approached Penn and Teller, he had the side that said Penn and Teller facing them. And that was at the same time and Teller had that surprised look on his face.
well the force on the king was preety obvious but the letters got me and the order of cards maan im just blown away... this is simply amazing
This is by far one of my favourite tricks on fool us. The amount of skill and practice required to perform the "base" version of the unshuffle is incredible. I can only hit it consistently about 10% of the time. The bit where the cards read Pen and Teller blows my mind to this day. Truely inspiring!
So I just started watching this show and I just realized the trophie practically says “FU” ahhaha I love this show
What I noticed about Mr. Paul Gertner is his humility and pleasant demeanor. He is not like most magicians who that after performing a trick pretend how smart they are and you are just a dumb fool. He makes magic fun and a joy to watch.
Thanks for the nice comment. I agree sometimes magic is performed in the style: "I have a coin... It's Gone... You're an a_ _ _ _ _ _! People enjoy being fooled but not being made a fool.
I think this show helps to promote this amazing art form.
Well done, Sir. And I know *exactly* how he pulled this off.
He used a magic marker.
100% right.
If you are in the Boston Area or visiting on a Friday Night come and see the Magic that Fooled Penn & Teller Live. The 7:00pm show is Sold Out most nights... but we just added a 9:00PM show and tickets are still available. Go to: www.MiraclesAndOtherDeceptions.com
What if you repeat this trick then when he asks to see the deck and after he shuffles it. it says "fooler"
isn't this mathieu bich's effect?
Absolutely amazing, whats the name of your book and where can I get one??
You, sir, are fabulous. I wish I was in Boston just for this
Paul Gertner, can the edge of the deck be...optional? To be dis-carded?
It's incredible that you're still responding to comments knowing that I've seen your video ages ago and was blown by it, but I gotta tell you, math is the real trick here, respect Mr.Gertner.
I love how the trophy says
"F U"
I just love that surprised look on Teller's face near the end that clearly expresses the "I can't believe he's actually letting us inspect the damned deck!"
My favorite moment too.
Paul Gertner
One thing I noticed though, you put the deck in your pocket before showing it to them.
Now I might not be a master of magic but even yesterday's uncooked salami knows that when something goes into a magician's pocket, it has been altered. 😃
Anyway is that the case or am I wrong?
Not always... sometimes a magician pockets an item simply when the trick is over. The option for a spectator to examine every prop a magician uses in their show is highly unusual and would not make for a very interesting performance.
Paul Gertner
Haha ok. But knowing that this is Pen and Teller, I personally would be prepared you know. 😅
Anyway, loved the trick though. 😀
You said the magic words: "be prepared!" Fortunately I was.
When you showed the cards at 0:47 I read "pen & teller." I was actually surprised when it said "unshuffled"
I'm not sure if I'm more or less confused by the ending having noticed that.
Does the trophy really says F U hahahahaha hilarious
i was at one of their shows in vegas once and they had a thing on being kicked out of the magicians circle and for the final part they showed that big F U sign
What the fuck did I just watch? This is insane. I don't get how someone can be this talented.
Probably my favourite trick I've seen in the history of Fool Us
Amazing. I also appreciate Paul's attitude and candour. Too many magicians have a patronising or overly confident tone and he just makes you enjoy the trick and has a wonderful humble nature that contrasts his obviously incredible skill. Great stuff Paul!
A wise magician named Vernon used to preach just what you suggested... that concealing skill enhances the impact of the effect.
Those are some perfect shuffles so to speak..
A very nice trick indeed, although I don't consider any card pick "random" if the guest cannot pick the card by herself. Saying "STOP" is the picking method I most hate.
Zorro del Demonio you like naruto hug?
yeah it was pretty obvious he didn't let her pcik the card, the rest was still great though
Teller's face at 7:35 ! Pure, unadulterated joy at being bamboozled!
I agree... that was my favorite moment when Teller turned into a kid again. Magicians live to create that moment for the audience, but when you are on the other side and know most of the secrets it does not happen to you that often. It was fun to be able to give P&T that feeling of amazement once again.
I am happy to announce I will be making my Third Appearance on Penn & Teller Fool Us on Monday July 2, 2018 at 8:00PM (EST) on The CW Network. Tune in and see if I can FOOL Penn & Teller for a second time. I'm honored to be the only magician to appear on Fool Us THREE TIMES!!! BOSTON AREA FANS. Come see me live at my new show Miracles & Other Deceptions at the Omni Parker House on Friday Nights.
www.MIraclesAndOtherDeceptions.com
Looking very much forward to it Paul, thanks for letting us all know!
Paul Gertner get em paul!
Superb..will fool even god I think!
You're awesome paul..amazing
That's awesome! Can't wait!
anyone else amazed at how to turned the cards back over?
It's a nice way of turning them over, with a soft play mat it's actually very easy to do :)
DITTO, i noticed that too. Im curious to uncover how the this trick is performed... I observed that there was a specific manner in how he purposely held the deck at an angle showing the 'UNSHUFFLED' edge. Then when he spread cards out on table, deck was flipped over and spread out so viewer couldn't never see the other edge of deck. I dunno answer, but enjoy seeking out mystery of how trick is performed!!!
If I hear unshuffle one more time I'm going to lose my marbles
Every day I'm unshuffling.
10 days of thinking, week to prepare and other weeks of showing the trick on video to top slight of hand artists to confirm.
To put that in perspective, that effort needs decades of accumulated work and mastering the art itself under it for even before you can try to make that development.
Insane and beautiful.
If Penn is a fan of the dude then he's probably a wizard.
After months, I still love this trick.
Specially the saying: I give an unshuffle, it's looks like shuffle, sounds like shuffle, but it's unshuffle.
There's always an explination to magic people say... But when I see stuff like this, it's hard not to even suspect, even a little, that some people are just purely fucking magical.
Paul, I have to say, I'm far from an expert but your act is really one of the best I've seen. Your patter is so polished, the tricks are crisp, your chemistry with the audience is really amazing. Every time I see you in a youtube video it's a treat.
The trick is amazing as well as the performer. The fact that Paul is answering people questions here in comment section makes him a role model to me!
It's fun to see what people are thinking. Glad you enjoyed Unshuffled.
paul is one of my favorites, he always has something new
the fact that he didn't look for the card but instead made it say the card is amazing
That is a ridiculously cool trick. So glad Penn was careful about not revealing any details because I could watch that a hundred times.
The cards were not mixed up they were the same if you read them left to right as if you would read them right to left. Look at 1:10
shamp the champ damn dude well done on picking that up 😱
shamp the champ it stops being mirrored after the jack of spades and clubs though if im not mistaken
Jonathan Ireland no it continues
Genius card trick, probably one of the best seen...how many pages to explain this one? I love coding 😘
MFI Artist Blue well he wrote a whole book on one trick and one of the best magicians alive couldn't do it. So I'd say it's as complicated as it gets
Fucking cringe
the deck seems to be symmetrically mixed...
dude, can it really be? that would be fucking mindblowing
Me too
There are two things that are really incredible about this trick: the ending and the force
Paul is a true master of his craft :)
Its really uplifting when you see magicians in their element, it makes one want to stop what ever they are doing and begin learning the basics...
If u look at the first arrangement at 1:11, you can see that the deck is specifically arranged... the 9 of hearts matches with the 10 of hearts, and 4 with 5 (cards after 9&10), Q with J. Alternates every 3 cards with 1 higher or 1 lower card.
Also, you can see this at 4:50(the two colors), this was a perfect shuffle; the arrangement of this deck was from a perfect shuffle of a number ordered deck with hearts, spades, diamonds, clover.
Just some random thoughts :P
As a fooler myself I've watched a LOT of these videos. This is definitely one of my favourites. so clean. Great work
Richard thanks. I enjoyed your spot also. Nice to have such a high quality video to show clients.
this is by far one of the most smoothly done performances, at no point did my mind try to point out any sleight of hand or deception, it looked exactly like what magic should look like, like it was real. bravo sir, bravo
Many Thanks for the kind comment.
That's great. Very well done.
I love how in two moments of the presentation the crowd thinks it's over, but then he continues the trick.
Glad you enjoyed it. Yes I'm a big fan of double endings.... if they have a reason and fit the trick.
I love that the trophy has a big F U on it 😂
Love it - great presentation. I love your stage manner.
That was the best card trick I've ever seen, I dislike card tricks but this was amazing. I saw you on Penn and Teller when you did this and I had to watch it again. Your so amazing thank you
I once made an entire deck of cards disappear.. still haven't found them.
:D rofl.. The same day I performed a trick where i made an entire deck of card appear out of thin air.. so it seems its with me right now.. come and take it back.
Way back when I was in dealer school, our instructor could do the Faro shuffle. He showed how he could make it look like he fully shuffled a deck when in reality it was back in a set order and he could name every card. It amazed me then, and your take on it is just as entertaining to watch. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed Unshuffled.
Thoroughly entertained! As someone that knows literally nothing about magic, that entire trick blew my mind. I have no idea how you can just come up with tricks like that. That in itself its truly incredible. Wow... Props to you!
Jason glad you enjoyed Unshuffled... my favorite trick which I created about 42 years ago. It's nice to see it getting more exposure with the help of Fool Us.
To be honest, It was the best card trick I've ever seen.
Sir, How?? How?
Alison does the best tricks at Summer Camp.
Band camp
...And there was this one time - at band camp...
Simply beautiful. Had to watch it twice just because how good it is.
An impeccable performance. The stage presence and patter are great. "how he do that" really doesn't matter It is a great act.
BTW how did he do that?
Mark D Look up his books and find out
Magicians never reveal the secret... but I'm glad you enjoyed Unshuffled.
Hey Paul, clever guy I like the TWIST at the end...Penn tried his best to hide it, but he knew. He knows you deserved that....
I'm one of a few that have the third eye......
I can assure you Penn & Teller were totally fooled by the method, I showed it to them when I appeared on their show in October. Remember they only get to see the trick once and then they have to figure it out... they don't have the luxury of CZcams.
I can't possibly imagine how much thought went into this trick
Well obviously he forced the king of spades but after that.. uhh no clue
watch how he does it on youtube
You should make courses
