See how everytime they tackle and the opponent falls down no one is screaming for a foul? That's the mark of a true defender because they know it's a clean foul. Also players back then were rock solid. They didn't cry after every contact.
When I played football I was a midfielder more often 10 but sometimes 8 or even winger but when I started to watch nesta + maldini performances something changed inside me. Defending became my thing. Now I’m older, I’m a dad and stopped playing in a team but I still have more passion for defending players than the others. For me players like nesta, maldini, desailly, hierro, campbell, thuram, cafu were my heroes they were beasts
You are definitely old school. The new generation doesn't even know half of those players. Back in the day, defense was an art, and we loved it more than offense sometimes. We were happy to see a good game even tho the score was 0 - 0.

The timing, the focus and the fair non-harming slide, these were always there in them. Defending can be an art- people wouldn’t realize ever if Maldini and Nesta not graced the football

What a pair of defenders, the best thing is that their sliding tackles are always clean and throwing the ball out and in most keeping it or even giving a pass to another teammate. If both are already legends of AC Milan, not to mention when in the italian team they formed the defensive back with Cannavaro and Costacurta, that is, a defensive wall impossible to break

Compare with Pepe & Ramos most brutal defenders on they era wiith so many trophhies they've got but Maldini & Nesta was a masterpiece on defends
Ramos and pepe have to go high up the pitch and score often ,they are not at the back tackling all match long

What I loved about these duo is the fact that they never injured their opponents unlike Pepe and Romos who went in for the kill.
They are not just footballers, they are Rome's last line of defence! Legendary!
i honestly think the difference b/w them and todays defenders is that today they focus on keeping possession instead of clearing which causes them to make multiple mistakes while defenders then just did their job and left the rest for the midfielders and kept the ball outta the net

The thing is maldinis tackles looks very scary but almost 90% of the time he touches the ball first like he is not kicking opponents leg to stop them he making clean tackles almost Everytime.
There are certain periods of history that were sublime in football. This period with Milan and those legends all on that one team is mindblowing how good they were.
A definition of excellence and intelligent defending...the positioning marking tackle headers speed strength...I mean when you pick a team this two are on very best to pick of all time.
