I majored in sociology but took a lot of psychology classes also, and I learned so many interesting things from all of my classes! My absolute favorite soc class was Anthropology and my favorite psych class was Psychology of Genocide and Mass Atrocities. The latter was heartbreaking yet so interesting at the same time. Good luck with everything, Presley!

7 years ago my parents told me the program existed in passing but never elaborated on it but growing up in South Central LA with my friends dying around me I eventually dropped out to get away from that and got a job. I still regret that decision I did go back for my diploma but I would have liked to go to college in highschool I was like 3 blocks away from South West community college.

I'm in my 3rd year of a BA/BSc conjoint and I think I have two favourite classes. The first was a Linguistics class on Endangered Languages where we looked at the different causes of language endangerment, what efforts are being made/what we can do to help in the preservation and/or revitalisation of endangered languages and even a little bit into the language that we use around these issues and why saying something like "____ is a dying language" can be really problematic and have a large negative effect on attitudes towards the language both of speakers and non-speakers. We spent the second half of the class each doing a case study on an endangered language that we had a connection to/interest in and produced reports on the vitality of the language which we then presented to the class, as well as another presentation on an interesting aspect of the language's grammar. It was super great learning about the 24-odd different languages everyone chose! My second was my first class on formal logic. I had an awesome prof who made it a lot of fun and yeah I would really recommend Presley look into any logic courses offered by the college (often listed under philosophy) as it's a really interesting area of study!

Presley, this is such an exciting time! I hope you will take an intro to philosophy in the world religions class. I think you would really thrive in those types of classes and you would find them very interesting! I was an English lit major & got my secondary ed teaching degree. But I loved philosophy and world religion classes those were my favorites!
I taught in Japan for three years on the JET program. You should really look into it. I think you would thrive in that kind of environment and you would be a really great teacher in Japan! My stay in Japan ended up being eight years long and I ended up being a University teacher before I came back to the United States, but I definitely recommend at least researching JET!! The best place to really learn Japanese is Japan after all! I lived in a very rural town with no English speakers, so I had to learn Japanese very quickly. But when you’re surrounded by it, it’s easier than you would think!

One of my favorite college classes was Linguistics. Even just the 101 class had so much info about how to hear and analyze everyday speech. Like for example, the T in Batman doesn't actually make a T sound - it is a glottal stop which is the same as the pause between Uh Oh. And the t's in battle and d's in puddle are the same sound called a tap, not a T or D sound. It is probably just as easy to learn online or on your own as taking a physical class though.

I'm in England and our system is a bit different, but my favourite module so far has been behavioural ecology, so the biology of animals living in groups, social behaviour, communication, co-operation and competition all that kind of stuff. Ecology involves quite a bit of maths if you do it at uni/college level, you need to be able to differenciate quadratic equations, and understand logarithms. I'm also learning to code, both for data analysis and for modelling. I find that quite hard to learn but it is important for biologists to be able to do, and especially for me because I'm physically disabled so I can't do fieldwork.
For my note-taking, print off the lecture slides beforehand (my department has a policy of making powerpoint slides available before each lecture), 4 slides per page so there is space around them to write, and then in the lecture I can annotate around the slides. Sometimes there are graphs or diagrams on the slides which I can label as the lecturer is explaining them. When the most important points and equations are on the slides, they're also automatically in my notes so I don't have to worry about copying them down accurately. It's not the most aesthetic thing, but it works well for me.
If your lectures aren't being recorded, the priority during the actual lecture is to write the important stuff down so you don't forget it. During the lecture you likely won't have time to make your notes pretty, that's ok. If something isn't instagram-worthy, just don't isntagram it. You might find that writing up your notes nicely afterwards helps you consolidate the learning. If you enjoy that and it works for you, that's great, go for it! But don't feel bad about how your notes look. The important thing is that you take in the information and have a record of it that you can refer back to later.

      @actoutgames  Před 5 lety +1

Congrats! I did a few double enrollment classes my last two years of high school but I went the boring route and just did pre-reqs. I did do community college so I had to pay for less years of a four year school, and I don't regret it at all!
I think Media Law is my favorite class I took - definitely not the easiest, and dry at times, but ultimately really interesting. I also took a Gay and Lesbian Literature (I'm sure at this point that class has been renamed, but circa 2005 it was called that) that I wish I'd actually had more time to focus on. If I could go back and redo one university class, it'd be something like that. I was working too many hours and taking too many other classes to put the effort into it that I really wanted.

Outside of my majors, in first year we took a common faculty year, so I also took other courses in legal studies, sociology, and communication studies. Communication studies was interesting because you looked at the history, development, and societal implications of things like TV, radio, internet, books, newspaper, movies, music, etc. Definitely take a look!

If you ever don't understand something in class try looking it up here on CZcams. I found a lot of different professors that make videos to help break things down better and it was really helpful if I couldn't get ahold of my professor at that time. For note taking color coding really helped me stay organized. Sticky notes are my best friend. Having a planner has really helped me keep track of assignments and due dates as well. Also, for notes, I do a mix of handwritten and digital. Personally, digital is easier for me because I type a lot faster than I write. It also makes it easier to find things because you can use the search function on Microsoft Word to find things when studying. My college has an open book, open notes policy on tests so if I can't remember something during a timed test it's a lot easier to search for something than having to read through all my notes.

Oh and aesthetic notes, personally, I think they are pretty pointless. I wasted way too much time in my school career trying to make things pretty, neat for sure, but pretty I'd rather invest all that time take an art class in retrospect. There is a video called "How I Take Notes On My iPad Pro in College! How I Use Notability | Megan and Ciera" - I think she's pretty realistic about college level note-taking and it's cool because I would have loved to get started early on digital note taking, it's the future for sure :)

@@gcole6 Hi. Thank you for your feedback. Just because a certain degree does not offer obvious career choices does not mean they do not help a person grow. Presley is only a teenager and is looking for courses to explore. If Presley decides to continue to get a Bachelor's degree after getting an AA, then that is a choice she can make. I am only suggesting courses I enjoyed and found useful for my own learning. Also, there's nothing wrong with working at a Starbucks. If you enjoy it, then you enjoy it. And if no one worked at your local Starbucks, then I guess you won't be enjoying a Starbucks drink.

Ugh because I am not already at least mid-key envious of your education opportunities what with the homeschooling thing then you get to do this. Ok I'm fine just ranting and wishing for a do-over. Also I am INCREDIBLY Genuinely happy for you that you get to skip some of the timesucks built into the USA' s education system. (I mean it tho, ok? ok.)
My answer to my favorite college course is one called "Perspectives on the World Christian Movement". I know it probably won't be something you may take, but it was the 101 of my field of study and I loved it so much. If you ever get into learning about theology, it is a course worth taking and richly engaging.
As far as study/education tips to pass on for college and high school, I submit the following.:
A: Ratemyprofessor helps, but is not everything. I was the admin for both my high school's (ratemyteacher) and community college's sites. So many ratings and comments that were not thinking complexly could have brought good professors'/teachers' ratings down if I had allowed them on the site. On the flip side of the coin, some were perhaps rated higher than they should have been because they were more focused on being likable than being professional. And a lot more good and bad ones just weren't on the site at all, so still do ask around when you can.
B: With everything academic that you write, read it out loud as though it were a speech before you submit it to the professor. It wasn't until I had to do this by an English teacher that my writing vastly improved. I really wish I had been taught to do this at your age, instead of almost out of high school.
C: Try to study with the people in your classes when you can. Your fellow students will help you absorb more of the material and share perspectives you might not know about already, and you can teach them what you know. Obviously do this in a way that would be safe for you, but do branch out when possible.
I am v v v happy for you, Presley! Thank you for teaching me what you know. I want the best for you and hope your high school and college experience is wonderful and blessed. ♡
