When Presley Alexander of ActOutGames was seven years old, her parents were using many of the amazing educational resources available on CZcams as part of her home school experience. She liked to learn from folks like Hank and John Green, and also enjoyed watching daily vlog creators like CTFxC and the Shaytards or lets play channels like Chuggaaconnory. Her love of CZcams led her parents to encourage her to start her own channel. As with everything she jumped right in and today mixes in geek culture, Interviews, Vlogs and anything else that happens to be going on in her life. Their goal is to grow the channel to the point where Presley can have her own signing table at Vidcon!

i hope she is feeling okay now, i know this is been awhile. i have have recurrent uti’s since i was a baby. i was born with hydronephrosis, 15 years later and i still have it. i have around 12 uti’s a year and they never get better. each one gets worse. i take around 15 courses of antibiotics a year or more. i see a urologist and i’ve had multiple ultrasounds, and then now i have to get the dye one as mentioned where they put it in your veins. that’s not so bad. but i’m going for my second VCUG and they are horrible, they insert a catheter with dye, and i have to go in a few days for that and the other one where they inject the dye in your veins. i’m really nervous. i still have hydronephrosis, and recurrent utis and they believe that i have chronic kidney disease with all of my symptoms.

I came to get some advice on helping my 8 year old daughter get started, but I just have to say that you two shine so brightly together. It’s beautiful to see the bond you two have.

Thanks a lot. This was helpful. I really want to play DND. I already bought myself a bunch of DND books plus three kinds of starter sets. I am really overwhelmed even with the starter sets and players handbook. I am an adult in my mind thirties. I have a lot of World of Warcraft experience. So I am familiar with how RPGs work. I am new to the tabletop format. It is more difficult than a computer game . A computer game does all the complex calculations under the hood for the player. It is about pointing on an opponent, pushing keys for attacks and watching the health and mana bars go down. World of Warcraft is really difficult to master. Don't get me wrong. It is just that the computer does so much to make things run smoother. I have played plenty of video games, and they work the same way. With tabletop RPGs, the luxury is not there. Figuring out the calculations on my own is very difficult. I have strong math skills. The issue is knowing how the rules and modifiers work. I even find it weird to introduce attributes at the begining. World of Warcraft has attributes too. However beginners, casuals and soloers can ignore them and be fine. The computer handles the attribute calculations for them. Only hardcore veteran players need to pay attention. Then they can customize thier character for tough fights with other players. These fights are things like dungeons, raids, battlegrounds and arenas. This video has two children. I was put off at first. If an adult is struggling to learn a complex game, it is insulting to compare them to a child. Then I changed my mind. I don't have anybody to play with. I don't have friends. So not only do I have to learn to be a player, but I also have to learn how to be my own DM. On top of that I don't have anybody to teach me. So I have to learn myself by reading the rules and watching video tutorials on CZcams. This is a severe disadvantage. Once I watch this video I get so encouraged. I would like to lower the barrier of entry. I have heard of house rules before. The Dungeon Master guide has a whole section on how to use rules. I am not a fan of randomness. So I have a rule that dice is only used in combat. I got the idea from that book. This video was mind blowing. I didn't know house rules could be this extreme. There are huge changes to simplify the rules. It seems so fun, therefore it has got to work. Then I recalled what kind of player I am. I am an explorer. I care more about going out and discovering things than I care about beating characters up. World of Warcraft is great for this. Forget about dungeons and battlegrounds. I would rather go off in some beautiful remote zone to do quests and find story. Now that is fun. The enemies are speed bumps instead of actual threats. I like it that way. When combat gets too difficult, it can get real frustrating. Once I became experience, I focus on making a lot of alts. Then my expiration is enhanced with a variety of alts. Then I can have even more variety of races and zones. The best part is getting a variety of classes. My favorite part is the class system. I would absolutely be obsessed with different classes with different fighting styles and aesthetics. One of the benefits of having easy opponents is that all specializations of a class are viable. When I get hardcore, I can even have two or three characters with the same class in different specializations. So the kind of World of Warcraft player is an altaholic. I guess it is okay as long as I have fun and don't break the Terms of Service. I have alway gotten away with it. It is to the point where Azaroth is my favorite fantasy world, expect the one I built myself. DND has a lot of appeal to the explorer. I think that is the big draw for me. There is so much stuff! There is all these creatures. There is all the lore. There is all the locations. There is all the story. There is even a cosmology of all things. It is so creative and intricate that is blowsy mind. Oh DND also has classes. Yay! Most classes have counterparts in World of Warcraft, so it is easy to understand the basic roles and aesthetics they have. There are a ton of great DND lore videos on CZcams. That really got me hooked on the game. There is also stuff for other fantasy games. It is an amazing rabbit hole. The adventures in the starter sets are the best to start out with. Beyond that, I want to play modules. It is easier than making up a campaign from scratch. I have only read the Player Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide. However I keep buying the other books. This is because I am so interested in the stories and I like the pretty pictures. I think it can be possible. This video still used the starter set adventure with the simplified rules. I recognize the parts about the goblin arrows and the dead horses. Once I gain more experience, I can make up campaigns in my own fantasy world. I can also gradually add in rules so I can get closer to the official rules. I can even make some creative changes now. The modular I want to start with is Princes of the apocalypse, because I am a huge elements fan. I did design my own elementals. They are no longer blobs, genies or fairies. Instead, they are cute fluffy creatures. They are stylized according to the element. For example an electric elemental is yellow with spiky fur and a zigzag tail while a water elemental is blue with fins. I can imagine those things populating dungeons.
I was focusing a lot in the beginning of the video. Once I started to get the gist of the play, I spent the rest of the video brainstorming. I got a ruleset for me. Here is how it goes. There is solo play which dice only affecting combat. The player character has 40 hit points by default. Non player characters have 20. All characters have an armour class of 5 by default. All characters can use a basic attack. Roll a d20, and the number determines damage. There are three kinds of rolls. There is initiative, armor class and damage. They always use a d20. The end of the fight has the player immediately heald from damage and other negative conditions. If a character dies, they instantly resurrect in the same place. All abilities can be used an unlimited amount. So there is no spell slot tracking. All six attributes have two two modifier effects. First an attribute increases damage and other effects of an attack or other ability. This is determined by class. There are six attributes and twelve classes. So each attribute increases ability effects for two classes. Second, an attribute provides some other beneficial effect for all characters regardless of class. A player picks thier attribute modifiers at the start. Two attributes have a 2 modifier for advantage. Two have a 0 for weakness. Two have a 1 for average. It is recommended that players pick modifiers to suit thier class. It is especially good to get the 2 modifier to the attribute that increases ability effects for the class. Strength increases effects for fighters and paladins. It also increases armor class. Agility increases effects for rogues and hunters. It also increases initiative. Constitution increases effects for druids and barbarians. It also increases hit points. Intelligence increases effects for wizards and sorcerers. It also decreases armor class of the opponent. Wisdom increases effects for clerics and monks. It also decreases effects of the opponent's abilities. Charisma decreases the initiative of the opponent. Completing an adventure or session causes the player character to level up. The only benefit is gaining new abilities. That is it for my basic rules. I guess the weirdest part is the effects of the more psychological attributes. So I will explain. I think of charisma as being a good thing to contrast agility. A fighter with high charisma would make the opponent so mesmerized, or even so scared. The charming effect slows down the opponent. Intelligence has an offensive effect to complement the glass cannon role of a wizard. A fighter and a wizard are the two most basic classes and they are the ultimate opposites. This is reflected in how the classes have their main attributes do opposite things to the armor class. Fighters are supposed to use their strength to bear heavy armor and gear. This allows more damage with a sword and more armor class with a shield and metal armor. In a simplified version, I have the strength attribute affect armor class and warrior damage directly. It still complements the tank role of the fighter. Wisdom has a defensive effect to compliment the healing role of a cleric. It affects damage instead of armor class. So it counteracts the damage increase that all classes get. It is like how healing recovers the hit points after receiving damage. I guess my class choices for Constitution are weird too. I can explain that. Druids and barbarians are classes of the wild and nature. They get so much growth and strength from all the plants of the environment. So they get high constitution. Barbarians are tough, but they don't wear heavy armor. So a higher amount of hit points works as an alternate method of defense instead of higher armor class. In World of Warcraft, druids can turn into animals and fight up close. This aids in their fighting style. I don't know whether this happens or not in DND. In this case, a druid can use natural strength a lot like a barbarian. I am really excited to get more books once I learned an easier way to play. I think I only have two books left. There is Candlkeep Mysteries and Tales of Yawning Portal. I plan to go to bookstore tomorrow and get them. It is nice to finish a collection. Then that can be all the canon books. I wouldn't have the spinoff books or third party books. However the one kind of spinoff books I had was Magic the Gathering. I have the books for Ravnica, Theros and Strixhaven. I got into Magic the Gathering a few years ago, and I am still a fan. This game is also good for the explorer. I am more into collecting instead of playing. I am interested in the variety of cards, and not so much the financial aspect of collecting. The best part of the game is exploring the color pie and using it to build different kinds of decks. I obsess over that too. The game has a lot of world building, which is also great. I first got into the Ravnica part of the world. It is really cool. It is about political rivalry of factions, and each faction is based on two colors. It is a good thing I got in when the War of Spark block was still in standard. I really got sucked into it, and built a deck for every guild. The Ravnica book was the first DND book I got. I even got it before the basic books. I got it mainly for the adventure and the imagery. I was playing the card game and not the RPG. I don't regret that. Learning the card game is challenging enough. I did like the pictures in the book and cards. Each guild has its own visual style with color coding. So that was worth it. Since I am learning DND, running a Ravnica campaign would be a high priority. This is more of a setting book, than an adventure modual. I think I can come up with something. Maybe I can go to each guild and fight fanatical extremists in order to save the Guild Pact. Maybe it would end in the War of the Spark. I do find it unfair that the lore picks on Nicol Bolas. There are plenty of other dragon leaders. Maybe there can be one for each guild. The extremists have the goal of summoning the dragon of their guild. My favorite guild is Izzit, and that is already led by Niv Mizzit. He could count as a dragon leader. Another good candidate would be the Jeskai Dragon from Tarkir. So there is a big war with ten dragon bosses, plus add in a bunch of plain walkers. That would make War of Spark even more epic than it already was. The three crossover books are just the tip of the iceberg. Magic the Gathering has so many other places. A Phyrexia set is coming up, and I am excited. I got a brilliant idea. Take the Baldurs Gate Descent to Avernus module, and replace the enemies with scary cyborgs. Then boom. Phyrexia campaign. I think that would fit, because both resemble Dante's Inferno. There are other things. There is Kaldheim, Eldrane, Ikoria etc. There is even Dominaria. That is awesome. I would also like to check out the crossover of the DND set of cards. I like the idea of a class being associated with one or two colors. I would like to develop a game that combines an RPG with collectable cards. That is a cool new kind of game. Maybe the crossovers can help bridge the gap.
