We can all preach about the things we should be doing but there are also some important things that every creative person SHOULDN'T be doing.
I have dozens but here are my own personal Top 6.
1. Don't have too high an expectation level
2. Don't be flaky and inconsistent
3. Don't rely too heavily on people
4. Don't be the starving artist
5. Don't stupidly price your work
6. Stop saying 'Yes' to everything

What I really like about this presentation is the format itself... while he's giving you the ins and outs of being a successful artist... he's carefully showcasing his own works as well. Very clever indeed! By the way, this artist's work is truly awesome!!!

“Take ownership of everything you do”, very powerful. And that dovetails into don’t be a starving artist too!
Parents complain
Yes, let's beat that 'starving artist' out the door! A variation of that, which I've heard a few times actually, is someone looking at my work, chuckling and saying ' Right! Now all you have to do is die, and you'll be famous!' Seriously, wtf. So let's avoid death too, while we're at it, eh? Please pass the cheeseburgers, hmmph. :-D

Then there are those who tell you that “it’s really nice, but you will not make a living at it”
Right? And art is the only thing that has consistantly kept me going, while day jobs' security is a misnomer. You just keep on with your art!

It seems like a lot of this advice can also be applied to being an entrepreneur or a musician or other vocations where someone is self employed and responsible for bringing in their own income. This is great advice. It seems that creative type professions need to consider the business side as much as the creative side to make a living. We can do anything we put our minds to.
#1 Being an artist is primarily not about selling art, IT'S ABOUT MAKING ART.
ummm... that's very debate-able. if one doesn't "sell".. it's not likely one will "make" .
@@cliffdariff74 the main ingredient in making art is honesty, that will make audience believe you, and hopefully people with enough faith in it will invest in it.

I’ve always heard that when a student is ready a teacher will appear. At 67 this retired teacher is making changes in her life and in my search for direction AND endorphins your wonderful CZcams videos have captured my heart. I love your enthusiasm and energy ! It truly shows how passionate you are about painting and helping others find a way to make their own art. I am a 59 year old person - soon to be sixty - who had a stroke almost ten years ago, I am still struggling with it. My left side is very weak and I now a stutter, go figure. I've been trying to do something with my life but it always came to nothing. I found your channel just yesterday and I immediately subscribed. I used to play piano and liked drawing. Great stuff! 👍🏾 I’m always thinking and contemplating on many of these excellent points. I learned a while back about setting a healthy level of expectations on those that you know! I set mine low, because I don’t want any animosity to build towards them if they don’t support my art. That just lets me know that they are not my target audience and I move on! I can love them for who they are and move on to channeling my energies to finding my target audience! BTW: I love the calendar, I’d like to make some like that featuring my art! 😁

I really LOVE your work and your approach; spot on "dont's". Your paintings make me think of what I see when I dream or meditate, a form of photo realism but from another dimension. Just BEAUTIFUL, would love to see your work in person! Yeah, I beat the starving artist out the door (LOVE that!) 16 years ago, did very well for myself as a historical reproduction potter, and folks willingly paid what I asked. People WANT to buy from you if they think you are happy and prosperous, and especially if you show a general sense of appreciation. At 58, I had to leave the pottery for health reasons and have gone back to my first love, photo realistic oil painting. I am now 60, and continue to do well, thanks to my wonderful patrons. Outstanding! 100% on saying yes. I learned the hard way. I give everything a more serious thought now. Yes can get/ put yourself as artist in a horrible position. I founded myself accepting commissions that I really wasn't interested in executing. I made myself miserable. NOT AGAIN! Excellent tutorial!

No shelter (to do the creative works) No cash to maintain your health.
Do they want you dead and be creative in the grave?
