Jacob needs a band for these occasions. The one man band looping extravaganza is incredible don't get me wrong, but that's only effectively captivating in a smaller, more intimate setting where the crowd would be silent and focused. You can't expect to engage people at a open air festival when most arn't totally there for the music in the first place, likely unfamiliar with the artist on stage, are socially pre occupied and far away from the stage. I'd imagine many people had no idea what was going on when Jacob was running around the stage like a kid at a talent show :p I love Jacob he's one of the most talented musicians in the world but he's actually so good he goes over a lot of people's heads without him knowing it. Some of the songs on his debut album are catchy and poppy if he gathered up some heavy hitters and jammed those live he could have that crowd moving !
It's always been the case that some people are at a gig for other reasons and also that some music is too new for conservative folks. He is pursuing his own star as truly gifted people must. He's not there as a ceilidh bank in a dance hall so he has no obligation to get people on their feet
Reading these comments-some thoughts: #1: Jacob is incredible and a genius. If there's any issue-it is that his #1 medium is his CZcams music video productions. Just immensely amazing-and we live in the age of watching videos. #2: Live performance-I can see why this particular tune doesn't connect the same way as one of his videos. Some of his other live versions of his studio tunes I think connect better-having seen an amazing live JC show. Doing a live show-bringing an audience all together-it's a different thing than some of the amazing productions that his videos are. #3: His harmonic knowledge and invention is just out of this world. It's great to hear when you can clearly hear all the harmonic movement. Sometimes live shows don't offer the same high-end sound one can achieve in a studio. Playing live in front of an audience is a completely different animal. Give Jacob Collier some time-he's so new. I'm sure he'll develop some more.
After my response I read some other comments. When i think of how talented and hard working this very young musician is, I can only get excited about his future gifts of music. He'll only get more expressive as he lives life and meanwhile, I'm impressed by his efforts to share something unique and creative.
Looks exhausting. He is obscenely gifted, but I would love to see him perform with other musicians in a live setting. We already have Jacob's amazing CZcams collection for the one man show. What he did here is beyond impressive, but I'm worried to someone so young and talented being so isolated. Even Prince had a live band.
Well, even if the main appeal of this show is that he's playing all by himself, he has collaborated with many people, and he's even arranged for and played with an entire orchestra
He is playing, as do youngsters in a sandbox or with toys. Beautiful to watch and he is learning so much so fast. He'll be fine, he is fine, doing his thing(s(.
People come to see a virtuoso show (or video) and then complain he is showing off - somewhat hypocritical no? Part of the draw is the athletics and co-ordination of what he's doing although I find the arrangements even more out of this world than the playing. This is his fullest and maddest track and I see it either as a window into his polyphonic, crazy subconscious or a gauntlet thrown down to us to see how much complexity we can take. Dismissing it as "gimmicky" or "hard to listen to" or "too much" is exactly what people did with Beethoven, then Stravinsky, Shostakovitch... It's a game changer, it's a challenge, don't get too upset.
perfectly stated sentiment. He's a young guy bursting with talent and ideas that just needs to learn that it's okay not to showcase all of it in ONE SONG.
... With age, it'll be a lot more refined and he'll have great band players along him. I can imagine this is how Prince was starting --- without all the technology of course.
I'm a gigantic fan of Jacob but I agree with a lot of the comments here. It is an incredible display of chops but it's hard to watch because of the work we see him putting into it. Also, I'd like to see him communicate with other musicians on stage myself.
But....see, I personally appreciate the work he is putting into it! It's so authentic, it's not pre-conceived or arranged! He is so spontaneous and masterful at it at that!! Heck, he can play for me anytime as an audience of one, if I coudl afford it!!
omg that was so fucking hard for jacob xD in 0:45 the 3rd bass string was offkey, he "tuned" live. in 2:49 the choir do feedback in the cowbell record and it extended to 3:57 :(. anyway fantastic show
No, you're not the only one, although of the commenters have a point with the band thing, I get it! The thing is, he is so damn gifted, that it is above their heads, a lot of them!! It's a little too much to absorb in one setting for these folks! So, atypical band setting might be appropriate for a concert such a this!! I thoroughly enjoyed it though! It was just my speed!!
That's very unfair, Joshua. I made my request one time and now everyone thinks I'm "uncool" and wants to attack me! Can we just focus on the music and stop the trash talk and other nonsense? Enough is enough!
Jacob should not try to take his solo career to the live shows. Get a good band to play your arrangements. trust me, we will not be any less impressed by your awesome musicality just because you dont play everything at the same time.
He did his part, impossible for him to do any more, and he is communicating - the audience has to do their part. I honestly don't know that could have done any more.
lol, that sounded like a big mess, like others have rightfully said here before me he really has to rethink this whole one-man-live-band approach because this is not working at all, too much technics no musical feel and that's what music in the end is all about, not about this melting pot of messy sounds with a song in there somewhere. Very disappointing, but hey the kid is still young so hopefully he learns from his mistakes :)
Maybe it's not working for you, but it does absolutely work for a whole lot of his fans! True, it may be a bit much for your taste, but you certainly CANNOT speak for everyone!! The guy is a certified genius, especially after having a highly successful residency at MIT no less!! So, you may want to check out something a little less adventurous!!
i feel.. somehow.... he force the audience to recognize him that i'm a genius person instead of i'm a musician.... very tired watching his performance....

In case you haven't found out, Jacob is currently touring with his own band!
Alien.....Everytime I listen to you I get the same feeling, you're not from planet earth......amazing Genius

He is really taking music into a new era/dimension!

Hahaha superb expression "obscenely gifted"... Couldn t be more accurate.
im glad that now he did get a band
He is playing, as do youngsters in a sandbox or with toys. Beautiful to watch and he is learning so much so fast. He'll be fine, he is fine, doing his thing(s(.
This will be appreciated as classical music in 2216
it's amazing watching him do this live

Holy Moly! Hitting the loopz out of the park!!
This is kind of stressful to watch
totally agree

Very true, it was a big mess, not emotionally engaging at all.
How he keeps up, I do not know! :-) There's a LOT going on in this performance - live and loops. WOW.
Not much left of the original charm of this brilliant MJ song..
what he's doing here is too much for people to take in a live setting. But the kid is incredible!

Wow! Wow! Wow!
Kreativ musikk geni❤️
True Talent
imagine setting up all that equipment and then just one guy comes. Roadies minds all over the place.
Yeah !! Man ... That very Hit full. All those Space and equipment juste for One Guy on the stage ... Pfff

Immm sayinnggg
I actually liked this performance. Am I the only one?

I think he's so very good though

U so cool
Omg how do u do the harmonize
Alex Bautista he has a custom harmoniser built for him by Ben Bloomberg of MIT.
No "F" words required here, regardless of whether you like it or not. Come on kids, let's grow up and clean up our act!
Are you ready for this world? There are a lot worse things out there than words starting with F.
Maybe so, but why do we have to dwell on them??? It's all about the music, folks. That's the point of sharing these music videos.
It seems to me that you're the one dwelling on the word, mate :)
That's very unfair, Joshua. I made my request one time and now everyone thinks I'm "uncool" and wants to attack me! Can we just focus on the music and stop the trash talk and other nonsense? Enough is enough!
Who attacked you? Who called you "uncool"? Who's trash talking? Simmer down. You're imagining things.
Mio Dio...mio Dio
4:49
Why not with a band?
Interplay?
is he tuning the bass while he's playing it?
Yup. That on top of everything that's happening.
@3:18..teen town!
That was very confusing
Eh he has the energy, just a young musician breaking the mold.
Who is on the camera? A robot?

he is a genius but this performance is not good.... cero connection and communication with audience.....maybe with a little support band will be great
he is fully immersed in the music, already communicating
I'm Fully Agree 👍 with you ...
He did his part, impossible for him to do any more, and he is communicating - the audience has to do their part. I honestly
don't know that could have done any more.
Jacob would be better off doing nothing. Get others to do everything and just stand there and sing along.

Define too much technics
Unfortunately, as far as I know, this was his last performance. He must have given up music 😞. He makes hats and sweatshirts for a living now
@@jessemoderwell3851 bro shut up🤣🤣🤣🤣
i feel.. somehow.... he force the audience to recognize him that i'm a genius person instead of i'm a musician.... very tired watching his performance....
Bof, pas terrible du tout
