Jacob needs a band for these occasions. The one man band looping extravaganza is incredible don't get me wrong, but that's only effectively captivating in a smaller, more intimate setting where the crowd would be silent and focused. You can't expect to engage people at a open air festival when most arn't totally there for the music in the first place, likely unfamiliar with the artist on stage, are socially pre occupied and far away from the stage. I'd imagine many people had no idea what was going on when Jacob was running around the stage like a kid at a talent show :p I love Jacob he's one of the most talented musicians in the world but he's actually so good he goes over a lot of people's heads without him knowing it. Some of the songs on his debut album are catchy and poppy if he gathered up some heavy hitters and jammed those live he could have that crowd moving !

It's always been the case that some people are at a gig for other reasons and also that some music is too new for conservative folks. He is pursuing his own star as truly gifted people must. He's not there as a ceilidh bank in a dance hall so he has no obligation to get people on their feet

Reading these comments-some thoughts: #1: Jacob is incredible and a genius. If there's any issue-it is that his #1 medium is his CZcams music video productions. Just immensely amazing-and we live in the age of watching videos. #2: Live performance-I can see why this particular tune doesn't connect the same way as one of his videos. Some of his other live versions of his studio tunes I think connect better-having seen an amazing live JC show. Doing a live show-bringing an audience all together-it's a different thing than some of the amazing productions that his videos are. #3: His harmonic knowledge and invention is just out of this world. It's great to hear when you can clearly hear all the harmonic movement. Sometimes live shows don't offer the same high-end sound one can achieve in a studio. Playing live in front of an audience is a completely different animal. Give Jacob Collier some time-he's so new. I'm sure he'll develop some more.

After my response I read some other comments. When i think of how talented and hard working this very young musician is, I can only get excited about his future gifts of music. He'll only get more expressive as he lives life and meanwhile, I'm impressed by his efforts to share something unique and creative.

Looks exhausting. He is obscenely gifted, but I would love to see him perform with other musicians in a live setting. We already have Jacob's amazing CZcams collection for the one man show. What he did here is beyond impressive, but I'm worried to someone so young and talented being so isolated. Even Prince had a live band.

Well, even if the main appeal of this show is that he's playing all by himself, he has collaborated with many people, and he's even arranged for and played with an entire orchestra

People come to see a virtuoso show (or video) and then complain he is showing off - somewhat hypocritical no? Part of the draw is the athletics and co-ordination of what he's doing although I find the arrangements even more out of this world than the playing. This is his fullest and maddest track and I see it either as a window into his polyphonic, crazy subconscious or a gauntlet thrown down to us to see how much complexity we can take.
Dismissing it as "gimmicky" or "hard to listen to" or "too much" is exactly what people did with Beethoven, then Stravinsky, Shostakovitch... It's a game changer, it's a challenge, don't get too upset.

I'm a gigantic fan of Jacob but I agree with a lot of the comments here. It is an incredible display of chops but it's hard to watch because of the work we see him putting into it. Also, I'd like to see him communicate with other musicians on stage myself.

No, you're not the only one, although of the commenters have a point with the band thing, I get it! The thing is, he is so damn gifted, that it is above their heads, a lot of them!! It's a little too much to absorb in one setting for these folks! So, atypical band setting might be appropriate for a concert such a this!! I thoroughly enjoyed it though! It was just my speed!!

lol, that sounded like a big mess, like others have rightfully said here before me he really has to rethink this whole one-man-live-band approach because this is not working at all, too much technics no musical feel and that's what music in the end is all about, not about this melting pot of messy sounds with a song in there somewhere. Very disappointing, but hey the kid is still young so hopefully he learns from his mistakes :)
