Its "THE SATYAJIT RAY" who directed the movie. Ofc its beyond amazing
Glad to see cannes has screened such a classic. The review should have definitely mentioned about the interview sequence in the film. That's the highlight
‘Pratidwandi’ still feels relevant and that’s more chilling.
Am surprised there was no mention of the last explosion by Dhritiman Chatterjee on the recruitment board or his famous dialogue "Vietnam War" is a bigger feat than Landing on the Moon
my favorite satyajit ray film. so glad NFAI and martin scorsese restored this film and thampu respectively . looking forward to watch restored films of tapan sinha, Mrinal sen, ritwik ghatak, G. Aravindan and malyalam film director john abraham. eagerly waiting to watch restored version of pratidwandi
Why do you connect Zanjeer with a Ray film? Typical of the Bollywood pundits... Understand the Bengali culture and not loose connect angry young men... Ridiculous
Wow what a classic movie. I watched it for the first time few days ago. One of the best works of Satyajit Ray.👌 Drithiman Chatterjee lived the character. This Bangla movie was the inspiration for another masterpiece in Tamil 'Varumayin Niram Sigappu' (1980) by K.Balachander. It was remade in Hindi as 'Zara Si Zindhagi'. But the remake was not that good. Watch it in Tamil.(with subtitles) 🙏
Great to hear that even YOU guys have heard of Ray.I thought you only knew about bogus bollywoodwallahs
The Calcutta trilogy showcases the timelessness of Ray. The standout scene in this one is the farcical interview. When asked to name the most significant world event in the past ten years (the 60s), the expected answer would have been ‘man’s landing on the moon’. But Siddhartha’s reply is ‘the plain human courage shown by the people of Vietnam’. Today’s interviewers and interviewees are much too woke for such conversation but this question could be very much valid now as one smaller country is standing up to a much bigger one in current world affairs.
every Ray film is so relevant even today!!! it never feels it was about some other Era...and it definitely was ahead of its time
Such a tiny review of a classic with some 'catchy' words. It is as if 'Gehraiyaa' is getting reviewed.
The quintessential nemesis of the degradation. Classic!!
So happy to see this review! Thank you, Anupama!
This movie is so relatable even toh youth of this time
We are restrained by the scope of our own mediocrity. Anupama, who reviews Hindi films primarily, couldn't look beyond the "Angry young man" trope in Hindi cinema to explain the extent of influence of this film. But the reality is Ajantrik, another Ray gem, along with Pratidwandi, were inspirations for Scorsese to create Taxi Driver. That is the magnitude and depth of impact of the Master. These mainstream film critics will never give Bengali films the respect they deserve.
Glad to see the review of one of my favourite movies and it brings a lot of fond and struggling memories of my lonely time.
Pleasantly surprised. Made my day.
She's not qualified to do this movies review.. unfortunately she's quite absorbed in the shimmers of bollywood that he will not understand the nuance of this great film
What is the name of the actress who played Siddhartha's sister?
Excellent review... And Excellent correlations. Better films bring the best out of u IMHO
