  • In this video for my birthday i built the 7AGE for the MR2. Sorry it took a while to upload but i still hope you all enjoy the build of the engine!
    If you guys liked the content stay tuned and subscribe as I get the MR2 back on the road. Thank you to everyone who watches this video. I know it is lengthy but I tried to condense it as much as I could while retaining information.

    you obviously know what you're doing, I threw a like on this after 30 seconds. I put a 7AFE in my '98 G6 Corolla you can see in the profile pic and always wished I had the skills to make it a 7AGE. I gained like 20 kW, though, so in my mind it was still worth it. I have the C161 6-speed transaxle, and it's barely hanging on, but the close ratios make the 1.8 feel very spiffy in this 3-dr hatch

    sorry about this but ARP bolts need to be torqued down to there max spec 3 times, so e.g.. 45ft/lb then loosen off, re-torque to 45 ft/lb then loosen off etc, the reason for this is the ARP bolts are usually measured by a stretch gauge to reach max clamping force, not many people have this gauge so ARP recommends this method.
    The head stud (that hits the distributor) was redesigned because it was known (on some, not all 4age) to block the oil gallery that feeds the camshafts, that gallery is 1/2 way down the bolt hole, you should check you have clearance around that stud for the oil to flow.
    hope this is help

    Thanks for sharing!! Very clean build! I noticed that you used regular 7a piston instead of 4ag piston, I had read that when building a 7age you have to use 4a pistons. I suppose you have proved them wrong. But I wonder since the 4a is a non-interference motor because of its pistons, is using 7a pistons with a 4a head now make it an inference engine hmm.

    This was a really informative video - I'm about to embark on a 7age budget build as well, so all this information was gold. Things like torque specs and clearances are especially handy. Did you get the block honed or decked when you put the pistons and rings back in? Or are you just keeping it low comp for now until you go forced induction?

    • @engineeredtodrive8589
      @engineeredtodrive8589  Před 4 lety

On mine i use 4age piston with 9,4:1 version piston and 7afe 0,4mm head gasket and a lightly shaved head bluetop head and the math give me 10,8 static compression....

  • @damienrios9919
    @damienrios9919 Před 3 lety

    Interested to know why you chose to use the 7A pistons. Generally you use the pistons to match the head your using. Majority of the 7A builds I’m watching all use 4age 16V pistons. I thought using the 7A pistons with a 4A head made compression over 12:1?

      Can go with t50 if going into say an ae86. Just depends on your power level. If its not much more power than stock like my build, t50. If its way more like turbo 7age look into other options. W58 out of an mk3 supra holds up good power.

    Can someone help me understand the big idea behind using the 7A block and crank, does the 4A block and bottom end have any weaknesses, or is mostly for the increased displacement. 7A Curious of South Calgary.

    • @engineeredtodrive8589
      @engineeredtodrive8589  Před 3 lety +2

      The reason I went with this 7a build is because my 4age that came out of the car needed a bore. Which meant buying pistons. Since I was trying to do it on a budget, I went with a 7a build.
      4a block depends if you have the 3 or 7 rib block and the 40 or 42mm crank journals. Smaller journals and 3 rib blocks are weaker.
      But yes the increase in displacement is a contributing factor as to why people go with the 7age.
      Thanks for reaching out!

      I'd recommend disassembling and reassembling normal engines unless you can get the timing and have done the research for a 7age. It's a 4age head and 7fe block so it can be a pain if you don't know what you're doing

    • @engineeredtodrive8589
      @engineeredtodrive8589  Před 2 lety

      The head studs were for a 4age yes so same torque spec.
      Unfortunately, there isn't a way to tell. Each shim and bucket has it's own corrsponding wear pattern to the head. You may have to end up getting another head or attempt to take measurements of buckets to hole in the head. I don't think that would work though because the buckets would each wear such a small amount off the total measurement.
      Sorry about this bad news.
      Shims, I just happen to have a lot of them that I have collected over the years. I think some motorcycle shims work but I'm not for sure.
