  • April 2, 2014 - Puerto de Boniato, Santiago de Cuba, Cuba
Filmed on the National Paragliding Championship, held yearly in Santiago de Cuba, around March-April. The event is organized by Club de Vuelo de Santiago.
When he is taking off, we can see a loose parachute ring, which he didn't check beforehand. The ring entangles in the air throttle, releasing the emergency parachute and causing the collapse of the paraglider and the forceful landing. He was uninjured in the incident.

Perfect inflation even when accidentally deployed with no force from the pilot. That sure is encouraging about how little height you need to land safely.

Paraglide Worldwide it helped that the reserve was able to fully inflate while he was not sinking.

Yea id like to know which brand reserve that is. I just purchased a mayday myself so hopefully it has as good performance!

@@petepuma69 Exactly, had the parafoil NOT been providing lift the ending would have been not nearly so nice. The reserve would have deployed faster, time wise, but he would have literally been falling like a ROCK during that time, and it takes the chute time to get you fully slowed even after it inflates.

Good reflex on the pilot to kill the wing almost instantly, goung into the ground with the wing pushing down would hurt

Wait so we are NOT supposed to hook the speed bar up to the reserve handle?🤔😂

Those guys moved pretty quick to help, especially considering the terrain they were having to deal with. Good crew! Everything you think can't possibly go wrong, can. Good to see him unhurt.

Pulling one line deflates open parachutes instantly! I learned this through an inadvertent opening of my reserve parachute after opening a main seconds earlier.

Love it. Pull to inflate, then turn around and they're going up without doing trying.

He looks to me to be very lucky. if you put this on .25 speed you will see as a reserve opens he oscillates. If he was 10 feet lower it looks like he would’ve smashed into the ground with maximum force from the swing under the reserve. As it happens, it looks like he touched the ground just with the least swing so his feet touch the ground with the least force. He didn’t even have to do a parachute roll. Given that the ground seems to have some sharp rocks, I wouldn’t like to have been on the wrong Point of the swing and smashed into the ground with maximum force against a sharp rock. As someone else commented, when the wind is the strong reactions have to be very fast and in this case looks like a fair bit of luck. Glad you had a happy ending.

With this kind of wind, the margins for errors are wery small indeed.
One small deflation, and you lose forward motion. If you manage to countersteer, you most likely back into the leeside. If you don't manage to countersteer, you spiral to the ground.

You should always have a hook knife handy. Cut the reserve riser and not the lines. Line set is way more expensive than new risers.
