I wonder what the difference is between him and a gambling addict who loses, ruins theirs and their families lives. Is it purely because this guy wins and he's good with money so he never then owes anyone??
They main difference, by a MILE, is that poker isn't strictly gambling. It is a game of skill which requires, amongst other things, an understanding of probability mathematics. A true gambling addict would put his money on a number on a roulette wheel. Pure chance. Carrel uses his maths talent to get an edge over his opponents.
If poker were a game of chance, then the same players wouldn't keep rising to the top and making it to the final table at the poker world championship every year.
Think of it like this: A gambler puts his money on a horse he isn't going to ride and hasn't trained. It's out of his hands from that point.
A poker player is in the saddle. He trains him/her self and makes all his own decisions in a game. He uses strategy an psychology to win. That is not the same as gambling.
Carrel is not a "degen" (=degenerate gambling addict). You never see him at the blackjack table blowing his winnings to a casino like many players do. THAT (to answer your question) is the difference between him and a gambling addict who loses. :)

hardly a maths genius, GTO poker requires very basic maths to master. But he has great poker ability for sure.
