Hi love. A couple tips I learned about leaks. They usually have dirt between every layer. So I usually cut them in pieces and then soak them in a bowl of water. The dirt soaks to the bottom of the bowl and the leak pieces float to the top, nice and clean. Then you can easily dehydrate.
Second, I just cut off the bottoms of leaks and compost or toss them. Washing off too much mud in the sink will eventually lead to a clog in your sink. Same with coffee grounds, unfortunately. Nobody wants that plumbing bill. If you want to keep the bottoms, soak them in a bowl of water again and then do a second rinse under the water in your sink. I always water my indoor plants with the bowl of left over mud water, but you could also just toss it outside in the garden. I hope this helps! Love your channel.

Took the words right out of my mouth! I usually find it easiest to slice the leek in half lengthwise and then slice the leeks. It makes the layers easy to separate in the water to get to all that dirt without removing the leaves...more leeks for you and not the compost 😀

I grew Honey Nut Squash, and we LOVE them! It is a cross between a Butternut and Acorn Squash. They are small, almost personal size. They are sweet and make a great 'pumpkin' pie.

This was my first year growing at my new home. I am learning the land and space. My biggest take away is safeguarding my plants from the wildlife. The deer ate well. This was not my intention. So I am going to grow everything again, but I need to be smarter about how. The thing I was most surprised by was the cucumbers. We got a great yield.

This was my first year growing in our new space. I learned a lot. My big takeaway is to better protect my plants from the wildlife. I previously grew in an urban area and so going to a semi-rural place was a change. I want to grow more this year. I just want to see what I can do.

If you cut off the leek bottom and plant you get new leek. My beds are covered so my soil is not frozen. I have been doing this for couple years. Good way to grow onions ( from bottoms) and leeks. Some will let them grow roots little by placing water. I just place in ground and they grow. Also do with with celery as well. Be sure take outer layer and cut in half as another viewer said. Sometimes there is dirt in between layers. Thanks for video.

My favorite thing that I grew was Pineapple Tomato. We were pleasantly surprised at the color and amazing flavor. What I am going to try this year and just spoke to my hubby last night about it....Luffa. He and my son love using luffa that they buy for the shower...so why not grow it over one of these cattle panels. Side Note: Harvesting celery for dehydrating today with my grandkids. Found out they love celery!

Best pour some baking soda and vingar in that sink.Let it sit for 30 minutes or more .And let the HOT water run for a few minutes. I watched one youtuber who said she clogged her sink up from washing soil from the vegetables. I am going to do more medicinal plants.I will do more peas and beans this year. I just plant what I eat. Got to plant more celery( I'm not a celery eater either) .For some reason I pulled mine up by mistake. I guess I thought it was weeds.I didn't have stalks but the top leaves.Im so mad with myself. Just found you Asia -happy new year!l I binge watched you last night and today -- love you and your garden, chicks and quail. I used to have a huge community garden but have to scale back (getting old lol) I still love growing lots of basil (4 kinds) in among my flowers. Try thai basil -so good. My friend Patty has my community garden now and she brings me tomatoes and rhubarb. I won't be growing tomatoes in the home yard -cuz the chipmunks eat them all boo hoo. Happiest gardening in 2024! Keep sharing all your talents on your youtube site - I love it.

When you harvest the leeks peel off one or two outer layer leaves ( I think you overdid it in the vlog ) ,then cut the leek in half lengthwise and wash off the dirt that may be in between the layered leaves. I normally use the white and yellowish portion of the leeks pnly.

I'm so glad I found your channel! My husband and I moved from Mass to VB in late spring, early summer last year (feels so weird to say that already) and so, the coming season will be my first full here. So getting to see when and what you plant will be an inspiration and big help.
I spent last year to get to know the outdoors here, so my garden didn't really do super well, I was late with much and that put a damper on things. But, it was a learning process, and I am SO ready for the coming season.
I don't have anything I won't plant, I am space restricted, so I will have to consider what we eat more than other things before I fully decide what to plant this coming season.

I bought them three years ago as dry root plants and didn't know what I needed to do to get them to produce raspberries. In 2022 I found some videos on CZcams that taught me how to prune them and this year I got my first delicious crop. Plan grow same but less varieties less amounts of tomatoes, cucumber, melons, onions, garlic, ginger, spinach, kale, beans ,corn, potatoes and some others ( collards, mustards and cabbage let what I have keep). Oh winter squash differently . I still have blueberries, grapes (5 vines) , fruit trees ( apple, peach, pear, plum, persimmon, and fig) along with blackberries and elderberries to care for. I do not want get overwhelmed. Want keep joy and fun in the experience especially around summer. Lately I set up irrigation system that did wonders last year for me.
Question do you have any problems with hose freezing during winter ? I am in zone 7b now ( Maryland) just want be careful during winter of leaving it attached to spout. Plan use it during morning try catch rain water if can. I disconnected rain water from down sprout did not want problems. Sorry so long. Take care thanks again.

Thank you for showing the removal of the loofah skin. Is loofah an edible plant? If so, have you fixed any dishes with it?

    • @YellowDoorUrbanHomestead
      @YellowDoorUrbanHomestead  Před 7 měsíci

You’re welcome! Yes, it is edible when it is young. I tried it once and was not a fan. It’s a bit bitter to me. I think I tried it sautéed. Maybe a different recipe would have been better.

@@YellowDoorUrbanHomestead Ms. Asia, are you still giving away loofah seeds? If so, do you have an email address where we can discuss the process of me acquiring them? If you’re charging for them, how much are they?

No, you’ll only get one head but most varieties do produce side shoots. They aren’t as big as the head but they are edible.
