These Are The Most Built Commanders From Lost Caverns of Ixalan!

  • I took a dive into Lost Caverns of Ixalan and found the three most popular commanders from the set. I break down why each is so popular and the coolest aspects of each. The big question is, what deck from Ixalan are you building? Is it focused around one of the creature types from our first visit to Ixalan or is it focused on a new theme introduced with the Lost Caverns?

      All creatures in Sultai that get double strike get it through an ability that checks SBAs and requires met conditions, or exiles cards from graveyards to get keywords.

      Me too since he is trash compared to Solphim or Torbran

    • @SmaugUKA
      @SmaugUKA Před 6 měsíci

      @@DUxMORTEM 3 different types of decks going on that can work alongside one another.
      Torbran simply adds 2 additional damage across the board, no matter the damage type. On average, Torbran decks will do less direct damage, and instead simply care about doing damage period to anything. Cards like Stuffy Doll and Brash Taunter really do work in these types of decks. Deal X+2 damage to either creature, reflect it back to an opponent with another +2 added on. (More based around a single opponent getting damaged hard while the others get less done to them simultaneously.)
      Solphim doubles non-combat damage and doesn't care about the color of the damage source. These types of decks have to worry about multiple instances of doubling/tripling and the opponent getting to choose how damage is doubled. On average, the damage done to each opponent at the same time is less, and more concentrating on taking 1 opponent out at a time in a swift manner. (More overall damage to one opponent, but less to each than Axonil.)
      Axonil specifically cares about non-combat damage from red sources and is more combined with things that deal a small amount of damage to every player or more often every opponent compared to the other 2 Commanders which put less stress on "Each Player/Every Opponent" type effects than Axonil does. The deck also finds ways to pump Axonil's power, which is something neither of the other decks care as much about.
      Ojer Axonil might be trash to you, but it's a different deck than the other 2 Mono Red Burn Commanders you mentioned. Torbran is damage period, via combat or non-combat. Solphim only doubles non-combat damage and will do less damage on average to each opponent, while doing more to a single target than Axonil.

    • @DUxMORTEM
      @DUxMORTEM Před 6 měsíci

      @@SmaugUKA the issue axonili cannot use any other damage amplifiers as your opponents choose in what order they apply and if the modifier is higher than 4 power than axon does nothing where both torbran and solophim still care and thus he will be outpaced by other decks very quickly. Then their is the matter of his lack of protection that solophim does.
      Basically your getting plus 1 damage from each source over torbran for a commander who then forfeits any other damage or you can run solophim for any damage of 2 or greater and get the same results with a commander who actually has built in protection
      As a person who plays a motored CEDH deck with both of those two I can tell you from experience axon is good in casual and that's absolutely all he does is be the more casual version of the other 2

    • @SmaugUKA
      @SmaugUKA Před 6 měsíci

      @@DUxMORTEM I've seen plenty of Axonil cEDH decks and game play showing the deck is easily cEDH viable and able to win. I do agree however that Axonil is more fun at Casual to above Casual than it is cEDH.

      @ancientpiguardian7462 Před 8 měsíci +3

      Although still a good combo, just be aware that for damage modifications, the enemy affected gets to pick the order that it applies.
      Assuming no other modifications, it might go like this::
      So Leyline procs (2 damage), the opponent can decide to have city of fire activate first (2x3=6 damage) and then axonil (6>4 so 6 damage).
      This would mean Axonil's effect wouldnt actually do anything since the damage you're dealing with just leyline and city of fire is 6 and Axonil's base power is 4.
      Leyline and City on fire still work great to allow Axonil to transform back from a land after he dies but just be aware of this in case you were expecting to get away with 12 damage instead of 6
      (Ps. No one actually remembers this rule anyway and often just dont care so you probably could actually still get away with the 12)
