      True. However, even though Elmore clarified what we all knew (basically, that the character was a Conan clone), IIRC he did go on a longish postmodernish tangent, talking about how art in general was subjective and could be interpreted in any way by anyone, etc... which was like him straddling the fence to keep both camps happy. That disappointed me a little; maybe he didn't want to get canceled by Modern Audiences™. Maybe I'm overthinking it. Still, he should have just kept it terse, mentioning his original vision (thus de-fanging "The truth revealed at last" Newspeak propaganda), and that's it. :-/

    I have a question about Baptism of Fire and Polish way of life. It says that a grod (or fort) had a population of 400 people. Did people live inside the grod or in its surroundings? Also what are "manors" like? I think the book doesn't quite explain what manors are.
    Thanks in advance

    • @RPGPundit
      @RPGPundit  Před 2 měsíci +1

      So in the book when I talk about the population of a Grod I mean the people living in it. "Grods" came in a wide variety of sizes: some were basically a single keep which held a relatively small population. Others (like Gniezno or Poznan) were basically cities, often with various neighborhoods surrounded by a series of walls (with the central keep being the ultimate line of defense). But you'll note that in the book I will also give the population of people living around the Grod, who would live in small unwalled villages or hamlets (or in the farmlands between these), all no more than a day's ride or so from the Grod. A "manor" would be the large home (usually in this time in the form of a fort or very small Grod) of some kind of local ruler (typically a Szlachta noble), who controlled an area of countryside. I hope that explains it.

      heck Foucault and Derrida hated each other half the time, and it got pretty personal; they spent a lot of time fighting over the very kinds of topics you're gesturing at (meaning, reason, identity, social responsibility...), to the extent that entire books have been written on their textual back-and-forths.*
      they were probably the world's foremost experts on dunking on each other, and while you could make arguments about the level of good faith on either side, their interactions are a fascinating example of two philosophical frenemies who knew how to hit each other where it hurt--right in the fine details of the texts. if you want to really tear Foucault/Derrida a new one on these topics, you couldn't find a better teacher than Derrida/Foucault.
      *"Foucault and Derrida: The Other Side of Reason" by Roy Boyne is one I read years ago and found interesting.

      @@IlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIl. There are differences between the two obviously, Derrida was much more openly relativistic, while Foucault tried to pretend he was not, but his entire position betrayed the fact that he was. The entire notion that authority equals illegitimacy equals Injustice is by definition relativistic.
      They were both horrifically horrible human beings, literally monsters, and the intention behind their philosophy was to systemically destroy the Western liberal order, which is the most advanced social model ever created by any civilization, that has benefited and protected the most number of human beings.

      @@RPGPundit that's a misleading caricature of what they wrote at best.
      it doesn't seem like you've engaged with their texts very seriously. if your personal dislike for them precludes you doing that, that's OK, but don't misrepresent what they wrote about.
      I would compare it to how I feel about Martin Heidegger. his political views were, to my mind, some of the worst a person could have. but it would be inaccurate for me to go around saying, "Heidegger's entire body of work was just an elaborate justification for (a certain ideology I'm not sure if I'm allowed to mention)!"
      now you could write whole books on the extent to which Heidegger's politics pervade his philosophy, and people have, but that statement on its own would be a complete mischaracterization of what one can expect from his books. someone who wasn't familiar with his work and took me at face value could read that and go "oh, apparently it's all just a bunch of bigoted screeds. guess I'll cross that off my reading list". which would be a shame, because that's not really what his books are like, and there's value in reading him, whether you like what he stands for or not.
      I think you're doing that with Derrida and Foucault. even assuming you're totally correct about their agendas, you're not painting an accurate picture of what they wrote. if someone learned about Derrida from you and cracked open Of Grammatology they'd be like, "huh? what's all this philosophy of language stuff?! where's the part where he says he wants to destroy the Western liberal order?!?!"
      basically, I think you're presenting philosophers you don't like in ways that encourage your audience to dismiss them entirely. I'm not a CZcamsr or an academic, just a person who's passionate about philosophy and has a lot of opinions, but I'm careful not to express myself in a dismissive or disingenuous way that could put someone off a potential learning experience, even when discussing writers and books I hate. as someone with more of a platform, I think you should do the same.

    The concept of canon has become so broken. Real canon can only operate in one direction. Backwards. She is canonically that person in their (fan)fiction, but that is it.

      Real canon only operates backwards? Or is that something made up to force the agenda?

      The idea that it's "canonical" is just another part of what I was talking about their definition of "truth". Which is to say, an ideological weapon.

    Here's a question.
    Since things like OSRIC,
    OSE, White box,
    For Gold And Glory,
    And your stuff.
    Have all been going strong for years without a OGL, SRD, or CC.
    Then what exactly would be the point. Where's the benefit for them doing it?
    I am asking not from their perspective? But from ours.

    • @RPGPundit
      @RPGPundit  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Do you mean what would be the point for the OGL existing? For us? It's the real reason Dancey created it in the first place: to preserve D&D in a way that no company could just mothball D&D and still sue anyone who tries to make a D&D-based game. Game mechanics are not copyrightable, but having the OGL adds ANOTHER huge stumbling block to a megacorp that might have sued anyways on the plan that they could outspend their target.

    They're marketing the new minis with controversy. Very few people would know these things existed if not for this nonsense.

    • @RPGPundit
      @RPGPundit  Před 2 měsíci +1

      True, but its a stupid tactic. Wokists won't buy the minis, they will applaud it on social media, but won't pay for it. And fans will be massively turned off.

    Plot Twist.. The female warrior found an enchanted Savinelli pipe in the Dragon's hoard, but the Pundit still hated it. ;)

    Not to be that guy but you're exaggerating on this. "verbal violence, cancel culture violence, and if they had the power physical violence" like that's like when the left goes on about micro aggressions. Like if I said the same thing but "Right wingers will start with verbal violence..." And so on. Like at the end of the day all the issues go away if you turn off social media and CZcams. Just enjoy the games you enjoy and as long as you dont stalk places you know people dont want you youre fine.

      Are you kidding? You could maybe have pretended that this argument of yours was valid around 2019 or so (though even there you'd be ignoring leftists having beaten people into a coma and shot people in anti-free-speech riots in California, Portland and Seattle), but there's no way you can claim this in 2024. Not after dozens of people dead and billions in damage during BLM riots, and violent assaults on Jews happening right now.

      @@RPGPundit except it is. If you turned off Twitter nobody would care what some nobody journalist or bottom tier employees say online. You still are saying words are violence just like leftists do. It seems like an issue if you are looking for that stuff online but turn off the computer and head outside nobody is doing anything to you or anyone. It's polarizing rhetoric that will only cause more issues. That rhetoric CAUSED the BLM riots and Antifa. Don't do the same.

      What a ridiculous comment. You're either confused or you're simply lying. Yes, the left-wing extremists are not just happy to use violence they're eager to. They've stated that their goal is the destruction of all of western civilization. These aren't people hoping to create a better future. They're violent psychopaths.
