He could have meant the beauty inside her. They were little kids when they first met, and as the years flew, they were slowly, but surely maturing in every way (physically, mentally, emotionally).

Some people wonder why odette suddenly “loved” Derek, but this is how I saw this whole situation.
I’m assuming it was because she knew from the get-go that they were supposed to marry eachother due to her dad’s insistence. She was really the only one who TRIED.
Being told marrying the guy was for the best of the kingdom is gonna mess with you, and it’s not like she was introduced to any other guys due to her dad wanting her to marry Derek so much that he wouldn’t want to introduce her to much competition (especially if the guy was actually kind and respectful to her, while Derek was a little shit).
Basically, she forced herself to love him until it stuck, especially after her dad died so she really had no one else; unlike Derek who had a best friend and staff who interacted with him throughout his life.

Firstly, Odette did the same thing. What made her fall for Derek? I don’t recall her saying one good trait about him either. Secondly, they were CHILDREN who didn’t actually spend all that much time together. It certainly wasn’t time spent getting to know one another on a personal level. If Derek’s shallow and a jerk, Odette’s shallow and a hypocrite.

Also, there's some moments in the montage of them growing up that could imply that they were into each other for a long time, but in denial...I dunno, everyone eventually has a crush on someone that wasn't worth the time or energy when they were a kid, right? Maybe Derek is just Odette's stupid crush and then the circumstances of the movie just made it too awkward for her to walk away from him after the curse breaking.

The parents finally had enough and resorted to magic to make the marriage alliance work out.
Cause like. Note how teen Odette in the purple dress looks pretty much identical to adult Odette in white and green, but Derek has a mild crush at most on her in purple, showing some jealousy.
Meanwhile by that time Odette's completely given up on him and would rather hang out and flirt with the guards.
Plot convenience. They watered her down for the romance plot to advance.
But he did mention it at the end. When he defeated Rothbart und the other guys were cheering, Derek went to Odette and said, that he liked her kindness and courage.
This made the movie 10 times funnier. 😆

Honestly when I finally got a chance to watch this movie, I was really quite disappointed with the fact that besides saving her life, he really didn't learn his lesson. He's still the same misogynistic douchebag he's always been! (I don't count him hating her as a kid cause, well, kids. But by the time he was 15 he should have known better). They didn't love each other their whole childhood but as soon as they're attractive, it's lust everywhere! Oh sure he saved her life but he didn't learn a damn thing about her! He still only loves her for her looks. Great message everyone: marry him because he saved your life and not because you genuinely love his character and vise versa. 🙄😒
I watched this movie a few months back and I thought it started strong, but fell real quick because the interactions between Odette and Derek post-what-else-is-there didn’t particularly feel like they were helping learn more about each other and let them fall in love with their personalities rather than just looks
